From the Elementary Principal…..
In elementary we have been teaching the students the rules for the hallway, lunch
line, bathroom, library, computer class and playground.
This Week’s Focus: Each day the teachers practice with their class the proper
rules in the Computer Lab. The students should:
 Listen to the teacher
 Follow directions
 Use personal workspace, hands on your own computer
 Treat equipment properly
 Don’t eat food or take drinks into the computer lab
 Only go to approved websites
Carnival - Thanks to all those that helped make our LCA Elementary Carnival a
huge success! Team LCA did a fantastic job getting the necessary help needed and
tasks completed that needed to be done for this amazing event. I had a wonderful
time playing games with the students and talking with all the parents. It was not
only a fun night but also a great time for fellowship. –Mrs. Elmy
EXTENDED CARE
All Children- Cooler weather is here in the morning! There are quite a few children that do not
have a sweater/jacket for our before-school recess. Please make sure your child brings one, as we
will be going outside. Next Friday, October 8th is an early-out day and we will dismiss at 11:30
am. Do you need child care? Please sign up your children before October 5 to avoid late fees. Extended Care is in need of the following donations: Lysol/Clorox wipes and Lysol Spray cans.
Thank you!
PRESCHOOL
We are having a great week learning about the letter E, number 5, shape trapezoid, and about
elephants and Noah's Ark. A big thanks to all who have filled out the parent information
sheet. We still need a few more turned in. Our room parent for 3-year olds is Mrs. Foote, and 4year olds is Mrs. Duncan, with Kole Hancock's mom helping them out. We have a fun project for
October so watch for information coming in your child's folder. Next Friday, October 8, is a halfday. There will be no afternoon class on that day; however pm students are invited to join us in
the am session. There is no school on Monday, October 11 in observance of Columbus Day. If
you need extended care on Friday, please sign up by next Tuesday. Preschoolers are awesome
and their parents are even more amazing! Thanks for the support at Goodwood’ BBQ on Tuesday. It was fun seeing everyone there and you helped out LCA so much!

KINDERGARTEN
Wow! What a busy week we had. Tuesday was our fundraiser at Goodwood Barbeque. It was so
fun to see our families there! THANKS GOODWOOD for helping LCA! Today was our field trip to
the Pumpkin Patch. It was a great way to celebrate Fall! Thanks to all our parents who were able
to join us. This week we also learned the letters Bb and Pp. Have you listened to your child
read? It’s so cool to hear how well they are reading already. Please make sure you are looking
through your child’s backpack so you can review what we’ve learned each day. Next week we begin the letters Uu and Kk. In Math we are still learning to write our numbers from 0 thru 9. In Bible we have begun a unit talking about Joseph.
1ST GRADE
Pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere! What an awesome time we had at the farm Thursday. It was
great fun learning about the farm, produce, and, of course, pumpkins! Thanks to all who were
able to join us. Our next field trip is scheduled for October 21st. We will be having a speech/
recitation time at the amphitheatre at Layton Park with a picnic following. Make plans now to attend. Also, it is time for each class to be collecting for the auction baskets. Mrs. Vigil’s class is collecting items for its “Cooking With Kids” basket. Mrs. Dunbar’s class is collecting items for its
“Family Game Night” basket. Please see list outside classroom doors to sign up for specific items.
Thanks in advance for all your help. You make things a great success! Don’t forget—Big Daddy
Weave Concert is tonight at 7 pm. See you there!
2ND GRADE
There are no big reminders this week. Colder weather will be coming our way, so please send
your child to school with a school-approved jacket (white, maroon or navy blue). Encourage the
children also to keep practicing their poems for the Speech Meet! We want each child to be prepared and confident on the day they have to perform! Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy this
last bit of summer heat.
3RD GRADE
Fall is finally here. As the weather changes and we experience several seasons in one day,
please make sure your child’s outerwear is well labeled. Our first Jungle Mart was a smashing
success! If you still have gently used items that you would like to donate for our next opening at
the end of October it is not too late. October will be our first month of book it. Students who
qualify with enough monthly reading minutes will earn gift certificates to Pizza Hut—so keep up
on nightly reading.
4TH GRADE
Thank you to all the parent drivers and chaperones who made Mrs. Schmidgall’s trip to the nursing home possible. Our students were able to serve others because you did, too! Two tests next
week: Math on Wednesday and Science on Thursday. Please check with your child’s teacher as to
which lunch supplies, tissues, paper towels, etc. need to be replenished. Watch for sign up sheets
for our two auction baskets. Mrs. Hembrock is collecting “baby boy” items and Mrs. Schmidgall is
collecting “baby girl” items. We need a parent photographer to donate some time and expertise
for our keepsake items for the auction as well. Thank you to Mrs. Fitzgerald for stepping up as a
room parent in Mrs. Schmidgall’s class. This much appreciated service hours opportunity is still
available in Mrs. Hembrock’s class. Have a great weekend! Don’t forget library books are due back
on Monday!

Fifth grade had a wonderful time performing and reading our fables and folktales. On Wednesday,
October 6th, we will be visiting the Hill Aerospace museum, to help kick off the second chapter in
our history book. We are beginning studying the history of travel, especially air travel. The Aerospace museum will give students a chance to experience history outside of the classroom.

Our next order of LCA Jackets will be placed on November 1st. You can start

for Christmas presents! So put an LCA jacket on your Christmas list!
Thank you to all the teachers that “served” at GOODWOOD BBQ last night and
all the families that came out to see their LCA teachers. We not only raised
money for our school so that we can continue to keep our tuition costs down
but we had a great time as well!

From the Middle School Principal…..
The Middle School watched the movie Letters to God a couple weeks ago, and had to do a paper for
their “chapel response” for Bible class. The students had to either write a letter to God or write about
someone that has either passed away or still living that has inspired them. The students did an incredible job and I wanted to share a few of their writings. Many of the letters were touching because I knew
who the child was as well. For their privacy I am not putting their names’ however, I did get their permission to display them for others to read. –Mrs. Robin Elmy
Dear God,
I’m going through tough times like everyone else and I thank You for everything my mom, my dad, my
two dogs, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles. I also thank You for my friends and I thank You for
letting me go to Layton Christian Academy. Thank you for Mrs. Elmy, Mrs. Rivera, Logan, Mrs. Sweet,
Mrs. Miller, Pastor Rob and Kayla. I thank you for Mrs. Buck and ask that her leg would be healed by
your grace, Lord God.
I ask that you would bless these people for they have healed a broken piece inside me and I ask that
you would also give them joy for eternity. Mighty God, I thank you for creating this world and for the
great people who live on it. I thank you for guiding us in your way, God, and I ask you would heal Kayla,
because she got sick.
I pray that you would bless everyone in this world and let whomever read this be blessed.
In Your Name Amen
MATH
-- An LCA 7th Grader --
Algebra (Advanced) - The students have been learning how to use graphing calculators. It is
amazing what these calculators will do. We took our mid-chapter test on Chapter 2 last week. The
kids did amazing. I keep hearing “Oh, I get it!”. I love that sound; it is music to my ears. They will
have their final Chapter 2 test next Tuesday. In the next chapter, students will obtain the crucial
skills necessary for solving equations. They will use this knowledge to solve proportions and formulas as well. –Mrs. Robin Elmy
BIBLE
7th Grade—Our Chapel rocks! Please ask your student about chapel! We just finished our memorization of Romans 8:15. This week is Romans 8:16. Please remind your student to study! Please
remember that the only homework that your student will have in Bible is the memorization that are
outlined in their disclosure. We have been focusing on being a person of character. Ask your student what we have talked about in Bible! We love our Bible Class! - Mrs. Rivera
HOME EC
Omelets and French bread pizza were yummy! Ask your student to make you breakfast or lunch!
We are going to focus on the different ways to make eggs. We cooked French toast and have written more than 13 recipes! We have memorized measurement equivalents and took a test on them.
We also have become more familiar with the different ways to cook eggs! Please encourage your
student to cook for you! Practice is essential in mastering their recipes! -Mrs. Rivera

LANGUAGE/READING
6 Grade Language—We are now learning the writing process! Now that we have finished
up our personal narratives, we are working on dissecting our writing using the Step up to
Writing Process! We are also working on great ways to proofread our papers. I would like
to remind you that we write in our journals for 10 minutes in class, this is homework if a full
page is not written. Ask your students if they have finished their journals. We also have vocabulary words on Mondays; they are now due on Thursday. Our quizzes are on Fridays, we
are quizzed on the content of our bookwork, the weekly Bible verse (which can be found in
their journals), and things we have learned about in essay writing. -Mrs. Rivera
Th
6 Grade Reading—We are reading Chapters 15-19 in Island of the Blue Dolphins. Ask
you student about the linking verb song! Please look out for spelling lists; they should be in
the red folder. Spelling pre-test are on Mondays, we are given our spelling lists and one
spelling worksheet. Tuesdays we must turn in our words missed written out five times. Fridays are our spelling tests. We figured out that if we study 6 words a night we really won’t
be overwhelmed with the spelling lists!
We also are read to by our teacher on a daily basis. -Mrs. Rivera
th
8 Grade Reading- We’ll finish Christmas Jars very soon and I’m looking into an in-class
project/craft we can do to go along with the novel. Students have done well with their
spelling work and I encourage them to keep up the good work! -Mrs. Sweet
HISTORY
8th Grade-I’m proud of how well students performed on their last test. Great job! We are moving
along in chapter 4, also about early Colonial culture, and we will learn about the events that led to
the Revolutionary War in Chapter 5. Keep up with your reading and study guide work! Mrs. Sweet
SCIENCE
6th Grade: We had a great time on our field trip! Thank you to all of the parent chaperones who
went with us! Without you, our trip would not have been possible. We have now completed our
section on earthquakes and are ready to move on to volcanoes. Next week the class will be building
volcanoes and we will watch them erupt on Friday October 8. This is always a fun time for the students and a great way to wrap up our chapter on earthquakes and volcanoes.
7th Grade: Our field trip to Antelope Island is tomorrow, Friday. October 1. This is a great field trip
in which the students get to participate in a service to our community and learn a great deal about
the Great Salt Lake. Next week, we will finish Chapter 21 and have a test on October 8.
8th Grade: We have finally moved on to building our roller coasters. They are due on October 6.
On this day, each team will get the chance to show what they have built and advertise how fun it
would be to ride it! Thanks to everyone who has been hard at work getting supplies and bringing
them to class! Also, I would like to advertise the opportunity for girls to participate in a program
called Expanding your Horizons. This is open for girls in 6-9th grade and will be on November 6. If
you would like more details please see me! -Mrs. Miller
MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS
We met for our “kick-off” planning party today and we’re off and running now! Please keep watch
for our up-coming events. I’d also like to congratulate another NEW member of this year’s council,
Cathrine Dunbar! Cathrine produced some very nice, creative drawings and submitted them with a
well-written application in order to become our newest artist on this year’s council. Please congratulate Cathrine on a job well done! Thanks, also, to each student who entered the art contest for
this council position. Your applications and artwork were also very appreciated. -Mrs. Sweet
