Objectives
Skills: The student will be able to…
Use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information,
formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and
evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution.
Analyze mathematical relationships to connect and communicate mathematical
ideas.
Identify relative sizes of measurement units within the customary and metric
systems.
Convert measurements within the same measurement system, customary or metric,
from a smaller unit into a larger unit or a larger unit into a smaller unit when given
other equivalent measures represented in a table.
Solve problems that deal with measurements of length, intervals of time, liquid
volumes, mass, and money using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division as
appropriate.

Discuss Mass and Weight using real world examples and
measuring tools. Measure various items using Mass and Weight
Exploration (see Topic 12 Resource Folder).
Explore capacity and volume with real world objects and
measuring tools by completing Capacity and Volume Exploration
(see Topic 12 Resource Folder).
Review the units of Capacity by using the King Gallon video from
YouTube:

Students can take this video one step further by adding 8 fleas to
each cat to represent 8 fluid ounces in each cup.
Practice Customary Conversions using Customary Conversions
Notes and Problems in Topic 12 Resource Folder.
Review Capacity/Length/Weight by using Customary
Measurement Review (see Topic 12 Resource Folder).
Play Stop the Clock to review intervals of time.

Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts
•
When completing conversions it is important that the students keep the important information organized.
Students can create a conversion table or use this rule:
Big unit to little unit = multiplication
Small unit to big unit = division
