Welcome
An Update from the Chancellor and Advisory Board
Greetings,
The 2009-10 academic year was very exciting for the University of Washington Bothell. Not
only did we see record enrollment growth, but we also celebrated our 20th year of operations.
To commemorate the special year, we opened student housing and an access ramp connecting
the campus to SR 522. We also launched several new degrees including a Master of Computing
and Software Systems, and a Leadership Master of Business Administration at an off-site
location in Bellevue, WA.
Kenyon S. Chan
This combined growth of students, programs and spaces came during a particularly difficult
economic period. During the year we witnessed a 21% reduction in state operating funds, a
major hit to our budget. Despite the challenge, we persevered, pledging to provide our students
with the high-quality educational opportunities synonymous with the UW Bothell mission.
We focused our attention and funds on program and faculty development to ensure that
students came first and, in turn, made cuts to non-mission critical efforts in order to stabilize
the institution.
In light of the tough choices that had to be made, the UW Bothell community has become
stronger and more united and we stand resolute as one of Washington’s leading universities.
George Northcroft
Within these pages you will find a sampling of our 2009-10 achievements, many made possible
through the generosity of our benefactors listed at the end of the Report. Thank you for your
support, especially during these most challenging of times. It is our honor to partner with you.
Kind regards,
Kenyon S. Chan
Chancellor
George Northcroft
2009-10 Chair of the UW Bothell Advisory Board

Campus Updates
A Snapshot of Accomplishments
Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence
Record-High Enrollment Reported
The 2009-10 academic year brought
UW Bothell renewed energy as the campus
celebrated its 20th year of operations with a
series of celebratory events.
Enrollment demand saw an alltime high with 2,801 (headcount)
students joining the institution in
Fall 2009. This is compared to a
headcount of 2,288 just one year
prior. Says Chancellor Kenyon
Chan, “These figures are a great
reflection of our institution and
its benefits to the region. Students
know that when they attend
UW Bothell they will not only
receive the knowledge, skills and
professional preparation needed
to be successful in the workforce,
but they will do so on a campus that encourages and supports studentfaculty interaction, collaboration and research.”
Learn more at www.uwb.edu/20years.
Academic Expansion
Academics remained front and center as the university launched a
Master of Science in Computing and Software Systems and a Bachelor
of Science in Electrical Engineering (hybrid: on campus and online).
A Leadership MBA debuted in the new Eastside Leadership Center in
Bellevue, and approval with funding was granted to begin offering the
Bachelor of Science in Nursing in Everett in Fall 2010.
The MBA program received
great recognition this year
when it was nationally
ranked by Business Week
Magazine. The program is
honored to be ranked #3 in
the Pacific Northwest and
#51 in the nation.

UW Bothell 3: Science and Academic Building
Growth of Stem Programs: Science
Lab Demand
With UW Bothell’s increases in enrollment and
development in academic planning, the campus has
quickly outgrown its facilities. In order to accommodate
the current demand, UW Bothell is seeking to build a
third building, to be called UW Bothell 3.
UW Bothell 3 will serve as an academic hub for
the campus’ science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM) programs. These highly in-demand
programs require modern instructional laboratories and
collaborative spaces which the building will house.
The new building is proposed to cost $62,850,000. It
will stand at 74,000 gross square feet and will house 430
classroom seats and 250 laboratory seats. UW Bothell 3
will house 11 labs including those for use in the following
specialty areas: chemistry, life science, physics, electrical
engineering, software development and geographic
information systems.
Pending funding, the project will be shovel-ready for
construction by July 2011 with occupancy expected by
July 2013.

Research in Action
Using Science to Understand the Natural World
F
or student Kevin Call science is more than just wearing
a white lab coat. Instead, Kevin views science as a
window to how the world works. “I really enjoy the
quantitative nature of science and how we can use a variety of
mathematical principals and concepts in order to explain the
world around us. I like to learn how things work at a subatomic
level…to understand how electrons, and protons and neutrons
work together to create the world we live in. I find that really
interesting.”
As a freshman, Kevin assumed it would be a few years
before he would set foot into a lab and feed his thirst for
scientific exploration. But this was not to be so at UW Bothell.
After his second chemistry class with Professor Dan Jaffe, a
world-renowned climate scientist, Kevin was approached with
an opportunity to gain lab experience by working on a project
to teach others about the impact of the greenhouse effect.
4 | 2009-10 Annual Report
Together, they created a working, measurable
greenhouse effect model. The endeavor was a lengthy one
and took lots of patience and trial and error as the two
painstakingly measured everything from how to best build
a device to what variables to isolate. In addition to being
scientifically accurate, the model also had to serve as an
educational tool for the public, so it had to be transportable
and easy to describe to others.
The resulting project was displayed at the inaugural Paws
on Science event in April 2010 at the Pacific Science Center.
With Professor Jaffe at his side, Kevin presented their research
to the crowds in attendance to great applause.
In reflecting on the experience, Kevin describes being
grateful for the opportunity, pleased with the results and eager
for three more years of scientific exploration and discovery.

At the World’s Stage
UW Bothell students provide voice for South Africans during
the World Cup
W
hat impact does an international competition have
on a place, a person, or a way of life? Imagine
your city, suddenly reconstructed and polished,
illuminated under the glare of the media spotlight. How would
you react?
University of Washington Bothell (and UW Seattle) students
found out first-hand in summer 2010 as they traveled to Cape
Town, South Africa as part of a summer-abroad media course
taught by Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences faculty Ron Krabill,
Angelica Macklin and Georgia Roberts. The course partnered
students with young video journalists from Cape Town
Community Television (CTV) to produce a series of short films
examining the impacts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on multiple
communities in and around Cape Town.
To prepare for their adventure, students took a course
in spring quarter which focused on broadening their global
perspectives, learning media production skills and planning the
series. Once in South Africa, students worked quickly to write,
film, edit and produce nine films which were shown on CTV during
the World Cup, perfectly timed for its international audience.
The films featured interviews with townspeople providing
their unique perspectives on issues as diverse as security, the
flag and “Waka Waka.” Highlighting native tongues and
vibrant backdrops, the students created a compelling public
forum for South Africans to articulate their pride, hopes and
struggles to the world.
The project was well received by CTV and the communities
in which the films were made and proved to be a great
learning experience for all involved. Says Roberts, “The world is
interconnected in ways that are difficult to fathom, and study
abroad, especially programs based in the humanities, can be a
unique opportunity for faculty and students to ask philosophical
and ethical questions about what it means to be a ‘global
citizen’ in the 21st century.”

I learned that My World Cup isn’t just about me. It’s a
“
collaboration. It’s about community and making connections with
each other. It’s about being a teacher and a learner.

nation’s schools to help move the education
enterprise towards being a continuously evolving
system where learning from policy variation and
adjusting policies based on what is learned is the
norm, not the exception.” To learn more about
