2011 COSHOCTON COUNTY FAIR PREMIUM BOOK

Junior Grange desiring to exhibit must notify member in
charge no later than September 17 so space may be divided.
Exhibits must be in place by 10 p.m. Thursday, September 29.
No articles to be removed until 7 p.m. last day of fair.
All canned vegetables and fruits and all threshed grains shall
be put in pint jars.
Varieties of corn shown shall be composed of three ears.
Displays of raw fruits and small vegetables shall consist of
four of each.
Displays of large vegetables, pumpkins, etc., shall consist of
one each.
All articles displayed shall be grown or made by a member of
the Junior Grange.

ARTICLES ENTERED MUST BE WORK OF EXHIBITOR
1. Entries confined to residents of Coshocton County.
2. Entries limited to one entry per class per exhibitor.
3. Once entry books have closed no changes will be permitted.
4. Superintendent reserves the right to reject any entry.
5. If unable to deliver entry items by deadline, items may be
left at the Secretary office prior to Monday 9/26/2011.
6. No exhibit may be removed before release time, 7 p.m.
October 6.
7. Exhibitor must present claim check at release time.
8. During the fair, doors will be open to hall from 9 a.m. to 10
p.m. daily.
9. Art Hall will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 noon October 7. The
fairboard will not be responsible for exhibits not picked up by 12
noon October 7.
10. Except by special stated rule, no article can compete
for more than one premium in this department. No article can
compete that has been exhibited more than twice before at the
Coshocton County Fair.
11. No more than two prizes in the same class will be awarded to members of the same immediate family.
12. No exhibitor will be permitted behind the railing or to converse with the judge during the judging hours. Violation of this
rule may forfeit awards.
13. Throughout this department, the word “Display” refers first
to quality and second to quantity; and displays must be made
up of specimens other than those entered for single or other
premiums - except by special stated rule.
14. The society will use fairness and diligence in judging and
caring for exhibits, but will not be held liable should a piece be
mislaid.
15. Premiums are paid only from official results in judges
book, which is final.
16. Where articles are of an inferior quality, the judges shall
refuse to award premiums even though there be no competi-
tion, and in any case where the articles are not deemed worthy
of first premium, judges shall not award higher than second
premium. In all cases, the exhibit must be of sufficient merit to
warrant an award of any kind being made.
17. Any exhibits removed from the building before release
time, 9 p.m. October 6, forfeit premium money and exhibitor
cannot exhibit again for a period of three years.
WOODCARVING COMPETITION RULES & CLASSIFICATIONS
1. The following items will not be accepted in the woodcarving competition, intarsia, pyrography, marquetry, and scroll-saw
works.
2. You may have only one entry or display per a specific
category.
3. All entries shall be the work of the entrant. Each entry must
be tagged as to which category is entered and the entrant’s
name.
4. Any carvings pertaining to “Santa” will automatically fall
under the caricature category.
COMPETITION CATEGORIES
1. Relief: Carvings in which forms and figures are distinguished by carving away the surface from a surrounding plane
surface. Typically designed to be viewed from one direction.
These carvings can be done on many surfaces, such as boards,
fence posts, bark, etc. DEFINITION FOR: IN-THE-ROUND: A
piece carved in full form, unattached to a background. May be
viewed from all directions, even though one view may be the
designated or preferred view.
2. Caricature: Carvings in the round of humans or animals
with distortion and ludicrous exaggeration of distinguishing
features.
3. Realistic: Carvings in the round of humans, animals,
aviary, or aquatic. That means work detailed to the extent of
closely resembling the real object.
4. Open Class: This category is for entries that do not meet
the first three categories, or for the entrant who wants to enter
an additional carving.
5. Junior Open Class: For all entrants, ages 18 years or
younger.

Rules:
(1) Wines may be made from grapes, other fruit, vegetables,
grains, or other suitable ingredients.
(2) Wines must be amateur homemade by the process of
fermentation and must not be blended with commercial wines.
(3) All wines entered must be made by the exhibitor named. If
multiple parties make the wine together, only one person may
be the exhibitor and winner.
(4) Exhibitors may enter only one bottle per class
(5) Exhibits should be submitted in clear smooth glass bottle
of approximately 26 ounce capacity. Bottle should have nearly
straight dies and a top which can be removed without tools except a corkscrew. Capsules, foil or other seals must not be used
over the bottle closure.
(6) Bottles should be filled to within 1” to 2” of the fully installed top or cork and must not be overfilled.

candy classes.
Exhibitors will receive one-half of sale monies, and the Fair
will keep the other half to be used in the Arts and Crafts Building.

BOOK 230 – CINNAMON RIPPLE SWEET POTATO CAKE
½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
½ cup chopped pecans
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
1 cup butter, softened
4 large eggs
2 cups sugar
1 ½ cup sour cream
1 cup mashed sweet potato (about 1 medium)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Preheat oven to 350. Spray a 12- to 15-cup fluted pan with
nonstick baking spray with flour. In a small bowl, combine brown
sugar, pecans, and one teaspoon of cinnamon; set aside. In a
large bowl, combine sugar and butter. Beat at medium speed
with an electric mixer until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time,
beating well after each addition. Stir in sour cream, sweet potato and vanilla. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda,
remaining one teaspoon cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. Gradually
add to butter mixture, stirring well. Pour half of sweet potato batter into prepared pan. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar mixture.
Spoon remaining batter evenly over brown sugar mixture. Bake
for 1 hour, or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out
clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes. Remove from pan and cool
completely on a wire rack. Spoon rum glaze over cooled cake.
Garnish with chopped pecans if desired.
RUM GLAZE:
2 cups confectioners’ sugar
½ cup heavy whipping cream
¾ teaspoon rum extract
In a small bowl, whisk together confectioners’ sugar, cream, and
rum extract until smooth.

Only one entry in the same class will be awarded to members
of the same immediate family.
No identification of owner of exhibit except entry tag will be
allowed until the awards are made.
All plants and flowers must be in watertight containers or with
watertight saucers.
Contestants must furnish their own containers, to be returned
on return of coupon bearing identification number.
Management may refuse any article unfit to show or remove
any exhibit deemed undesirable and no award will be made to
article considered unworthy.
In all cut flower arrangements, quality of flowers and arrangement will be considered.
