Extracurricular Activities Vision At Thomas Nelson extracurricular activities play an essential role in our community. Not only do our athletic teams help instill pride in our community and bring us together, but they also afford our student athletes new and ever changing contexts to apply our LEADER values within. Ideally, we expect every General to participate in some form of extracurricular activity, whether that comes in the form of the Future Farmers of America executive team, Tennis, or Beta club. Research on extracurricular activities and academic achievement is clear – when students are more involved in after school activities, they are more likely to find success during the course of their academic career. Thus, supporting our scholars to become involved in meaningful activity supports us in meeting our mission. Indicators of Excellence for Extracurricular Activities The Pen is Mightier than the Sword Student athletes are expected to maintain a C average or higher and have no failing grades in order to practice or compete in athletic events. We have an efficient system for monitoring this indicator and communicate it clearly to students. There are no exceptions to this rule. We LEAD by Example Generals participating in extracurricular activities are held to the highest of standards on and off the playing field. Athletes will assume natural leadership roles and are expected to live the LEADER values every day. Failure to do so academically or behaviorally will limit participation on any athletic team. Generals Care -­‐ Service Community service is expected from all Generals that participate in extracurricular activities. As school leaders, this form of service helps us all to understand the challenges that face our fellow citizens and shows us that anything is possible when we work together to take responsibility for the future of our community. We Show Up for Each Other We work hard to support our General’s attendance at athletic events. We are proactive and supportive in ensuring that each of our students has the opportunity to attend athletic events and demonstrate enthusiasm for their fellow Generals throughout the year.
