Edward Klgar: Early wind quintets; 1877-81.
Five partbooks (1st and 2nd Flutes, Oboe,
Clarinet, and Bassoon) used by 'The Sunday
Band', the wind quintet formed by Elgar in
1877. Original compositions by Elgar include
Harmony Music nos. 1-3, Promenades nos.
1 -6, 'Shed' nos. 4-7, Intermezzi nos. 1-5, etc.;
other contents include arrangements of
ballads, traditional tunes, and hymns. Mostly
autograph. The partbooks were formerly
owned by (Sir) Hubert Leicester who directed
the band. Add. MS. 60316A-E.
Trinidad: Four Spanish charts showing the
coastlines, the islands separating it from the
South American mainland and part of Venezuela, with soundings and indications of the
nature of the seabed. Apparently part of a

March to 14 May 1887, describing his visit
to Ceylon and Palestine. Inserted are twelve
leaves of archaeological notes on places in
Palestine. On the front cover is the name of his
wife, Emily Agnes Blyth; with the date 1880.

Falkland Islands: six maps, with hand-eoloured
features depicting the activities ofthe earliest
British settlers, drawn following Captain
Jordan's expedition in 1768, by T. Boutflower,

Illustrated Nursery Rhymes: The illustrations
appear to be the originals (or copies) of those
made for the published nursery rhymes of
F. W. N. Baylcy (1808-53), though the text
is not identical. Presented by Lady Twysden.

Williams Papers: Two journals of Captain
W. H. W'iUiams R.A. relating to his service in
Uganda as head of the British forces at
Kampala. Another journal for 1877-84 is
preserved in the National Army Museum;

Feb. 1893. Album of newspaper cuttings
relating to Sir Gerald Portal's mission to
Uganda and to the deaths of Sir Gerald and
his brother Captain Melville Raymond Portal.
The latter died whilst accompanying Sir
Gerald, and the album also contains his
photograph and a photograph of his grave.

II Aug.-2 Sept. 1769. Autograph, with seven
full-page water-eolour sketches of views and
a map ofthe route. The text and illustrations
arc virtually identical with those in a copy of
a journal ofthe same tour in Add. MS. 422-^2,
fols. 2-21, but the unnamed author of this
version, which is apparently based on Kccne's

narrative, must have been another member of
