How to write a Division Problem (5-6 min.) Volunteer Parent/ Helper Instructions Step 1: Please have the student you are working with view the following video. (2-3 min.) Ask the student to watch carefully for the three different ways a division problem can be written. http://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/multiplicationdivision/v/dividing-whole-numbers-and-applications-1 Step 2: Show the student the following circles. Have the student count the circles. Ask the student trace with their finger how they could break these 15 circles into 3 equal groups. Ask the student how many is in each group. The answer should be 5 in each group. Step 3: Tell the student the following problem that was illustrated in Step 2. There are three friends who want to share 15 gumballs. How many gumballs will each person get? Step 4: Have the student write the 3 different written division problems they could use to solve the problem in Step 3. (Use the video for reference if you need to.) Check the student’s work for accuracy. You are done helping this student. Thank you!
