Welcome to Blessed John
Welcome to all who are with us today. As always, we
are enriched by those who join us.
Many times after Masses people come up to
introduce their guests or the visitors introduce
themselves. We love meeting you. Thank you.
As you join us, we want you to feel at home.
We also want you to be active members of the
assembly for our liturgy. Please join in singing and
praying with us.
Often people need a little ‘adjustment’ to our
music and way of celebrating Mass. Please enter into it
and allow the experience to enrich you. And don’t
hesitate to come back again.
Reconciliation: Saturdays, 3:30-4:00 p.m.
For more information on preparation for Baptism,
Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation, contact Marla
Overholt.
For marriage preparation, reception of the Sacrament of the
Sick or reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, contact

This week I have been thinking about the use of
billboards by churches. We have done it ourselves,
especially before Christmas and Easter. Often billboards
are not ‘stand-alone’ but part of a larger publicity
campaign. Some churches use billboards extensively.
So I ask myself what it is that gets people’s
attention. Put in another way, what helps introduce
someone to a church experience?
In the history of this parish, we have found word
of mouth to be more powerful than billboards. People talk
about their church experience. Often they go beyond that
and even recommend the parish to others, especially those
who are actively looking for a parish to call their own.
We encourage people to invite others, but please
remember that an invitation is just that, an invitation.
Invitations can be refused. Please do not nag or coerce.
When parishioners encounter others who are not actively
part of a church, the best thing is to share honestly and
openly what their experience is like. If a church parish
helps one’s faith grow, then that can be included as well.
Each of us is a walking-talking billboard. Our
very lives advertise what we believe and what our value
system is. And if you value your faith and the way it is
supported here at Blessed John, please don’t be afraid to
talk about it.

Belong with Me” the Teen
Fuel series on friendship is
continuing 6:00-8:30p.m.,
this Sunday, September 22.

God and taking Him seriously during this

parents that you are helping your

We want to invite any practicing Catholics with a
heart for the youth to support Our Teen Fuel,
Confirmation, and Impact groups. The goal for these
programs is to provide an opportunity for them to realize
their potential as a vital part of the Church. This goal
cannot be fully realized without the support and example
of excellent adult Catholic men and women. Chat with
Phil Ward after mass, shoot him an e-mail, or give him a
call about being on a Core Team or assisting in another
manner.

WHY WARM UP?
As you know, we have been warming up before each of
the weekend Masses with a new song, or taking time to
reflect on the words of a song we already know. So
what’s the point? Our hope is to create a sense of
community and readiness PRIOR to Mass beginning. We
walk into church so many times without really preparing
ourselves for the celebration that is about to take place.
By warming up with the bands, we our ready our hearts,
minds and voices for Mass. We really hope that this is
useful time each week to have some fun, and to have a
little quiet time before the gathering song. If you’re
nervous about singing, that’s fine. We don’t care what
your voice SOUNDS like, we only care that you are
ENGAGED with what we are doing. We will find Mass
more meaningful when we practice full, active and
conscious participation.
TWENTY- FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
STREAMING LIVE
FALL THOUHGTS
Blessed John is proud to stream our weekend liturgies
LIVE through the parish website on a weekly basis.
Hundreds of people view our live stream each month and
many people revisit Masses throughout the week that are
archived. Of course we prefer for everyone to join us in
person each Sunday, but this has been a great ministry for
people that are sick, homebound, or checking Blessed
John out for the first time. Visit www.blessedjohn.org
and click WATCH LIVE. Be sure to share this with
someone you know that is looking for a church to call
their own!
Everyone loves the change of seasons and the bright
yellow, orange and red leaves on
the trees. But fall is more than that.
It is also a time of harvest when
the labors of months of work and
growth come to fruition.
Although most who read
this are not farmers, there are
many who have gardens in their
backyards. I know that my tomato plants are still
producing. But focusing on produce and harvest is much
more than gardens or fields. Seeing the fruit ripen is a
reminder for all of us that the seeds we plant will grow
and produce. And that doesn’t happen just in the fall.
As we see fields of soybeans and corn ripen, eat
apples off the trees, and delight in the pumpkins that the
kids decorate, we can also think about the results of all
our words and actions. Hopefully, we are also in the
process of producing good fruit. - hw
PRAYERS AND
CONDOLENCES
We offer John and Mariester Pavlica
our prayers and sympathy at the
death of John’s sister, Margaret
Tolles. May she live in the light of Christ!
GOING DEEPER SESSIONS
Fr. Herb’s well-received “Going Deeper” sessions will
return in October of this year. These three sessions are
designed so you can come to one or all gatherings. No
advance registration is necessary. They will be held 9:0010:30 on Saturdays, October 5, 12, and 26. Come for
coffee and ‘informal but informed’ discussion. This year’s
topics will include, “The Spirituality of Pope Francis,” “Is
the Sacrament of Marriage Going Extinct?” and “What’s
new about the New Evangelization?”
MEN’S RETREAT
Our annual fall Blessed John Men’s
Retreat will take place Nov 15-17, at
Lawrence
Lodge,
Brooklyn,
Michigan. Come away for forty
hours to a beautiful place on
Vineyard Lake, open yourself up to the Lord, and recenter your life. Put this on your calendar now and look
RCIA CONTINUES!
It is not yet too late to join this year’s
RCIA. If you feel called to consider
joining the Catholic Church, this may be
for you. We meet every Tuesday at 7:00
p.m. Please contact Fr. Herb (419-874-6502 or at
[email protected]) at the parish office.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
COAT COLLECTION
St. Vincent de Paul will be collecting children’s
and men’s clean and gently used winter coats
and boots on the weekend of Sept 28-29. These
items will be taken to St. Louis Helping Hands,
Toledo, for their neighborhood outreach
program.
WELCOMING SUNDAY
Every so often we designate a Sunday as “Invitation
Sunday.” Our next one will be October 12-13. This is a
time for you to invite to Blessed John anyone who you
think would be interested in coming to our parish for
Sunday Mass.
Who should be invited? Consider family
members or friends who are not fully active in the
church. Consider those contacts who regularly say, “I
should come with you sometime.” Consider those whom
you know to be without a church.
As you invite, please let them know our Mass
times, even offering to come with them if you can.
(Breakfast afterwards to discuss the experience?) Please
start the invitation process today, so that people can have
time to prepare.

DINING FOR WOMEN
Dining for Women is a global giving
circle dedicated to helping women and
girls in the developing world achieve
their potential, gain equality in their
countries and cultures, and overcome economic
limitations and social bias. The women of Blessed John
have formed a Chapter that meets on the fourth Monday
of each month to learn and assist with programs in
developing countries. Bring a soup or salad or bread to
share along with your place setting. We eat simply to be
in solidarity with the women who are poor and donate
what it costs to eat at a restaurant. At 6:30-8:00 p.m.,
Monday, September 23, we will hear about Foundation
Rwanda’s objective to gather and organize women who
have children born from genocidal rape during and after
the 1994 genocide, so that they may meet together in a
safe and protected space, receive peer support and
professional counseling to discuss challenges they are
facing. For more information, contact Meg Sears at 419367-8504
3:45 CLUB EVENT TODAY
Thanks to all who signed up in advance,
but we can also take last-minute deciders
for today’s “Walking with Fr. Weber.” We will begin at
3:00 this afternoon, Sunday, September 22, andl conclude
by 4:30 p.m. There will be an opportunity to enjoy nature,
learn a bit about God’s wonderful world, and meet other
kids. And, yes, there will be trail mix.
As we always remind people, this is not a club but
an opportunity for kids in these three grades to join
together for monthly activities and infuse our faith into
special gatherings. Each time we come together, there
will be a special purpose and plan, always with some
prayer or insight into God’s invitation to follow Jesus.
In Room 103, you can find some necessary forms
that must be signed by parents, as well as information
where to meet at Side-Cut Park (Maumee).
SMALL FAITH GROUPS
Participation in weekly faith-sharing
with other parishioners enlivens the
Mass and enhances your own spiritual
growth. It is also a good way to meet other couples and
form lasting friendships. The fall session runs from the
week of October 13 through the week of November 17.
The yellow forms are in the magazine rack. Register by
Sunday, September 22nd. For more information contact
Sr. Anne Mary.
