1. Confirmation
On 17 February 2010 the University of Gothenburg’s Board of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts
established and approved the programme syllabus for the Master Programme in Music Drama. The syllabus was
revised by the Dean at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts 24 May 2012 and 30 November 2015.
The syllabus will apply from the Autumn Term 2016.

2. Entry requirements
For admission, applicants must have a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts or equivalent of at least 180 higher
education credits from a school of dramatic arts or equivalent. Additionally, a special eligibility requirement
applies, to be assessed via an entrance exam that will form the basis for the selection of successful eligible
applicants.
3. Purpose of the study programme
The purpose of the programme is to provide students with in-depth knowledge and experience of artistic processes
to prepare them for their future professional roles as opera singer/musical theatre artist. The programme prepares
students for postgraduate studies and is given in English or Swedish, depending on the composition of the group.
4. Higher education qualifications to which the study programme leads
Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Music Drama, 120 credits
(Konstnärlig masterexamen i musikdramatik, 120 hp)
5. Learning outcomes
According to the Degree Ordinance of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100, Annex 2), to be
awarded a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts a student must demonstrate the following:
Knowledge and understanding
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the main field of study, including both broad knowledge of the
field and a considerable degree of specialised knowledge in areas of the field as well as specialised insight into
current research and development work, and
- demonstrate familiarity with methods and processes for dealing with complex phenomena, issues and situations
in the field.
Competence and skills
- demonstrate the ability to formulate new issues autonomously and creatively and contribute to the formation of
knowledge, solve more advanced problems, develop new forms of personal expression as well as to reflect
critically on his or her artistic approach and that of others in the main field of study
- demonstrate the ability to create and execute his or her own ideas with his or her own personal expression, to
identify, formulate and solve artistic and creative problems autonomously and also to plan and undertake
advanced artistic tasks using appropriate methods within predetermined time frames
- demonstrate the ability both nationally and internationally to present and discuss his or her works and artistic
issues in speech, writing or in other ways and in dialogue with different audiences, and
- demonstrate the competence and knowledge required to work autonomously in a professional capacity.
Judgement and approach
- demonstrate the ability to make assessments in the main field of study informed by relevant artistic, social and
ethical issues
- demonstrate insight into the role of art in society, and
- demonstrate the ability to identify the need for further knowledge and take responsibility for his or her ongoing
learning.

6. The main content and structure of the study programme
The programme is full-time studies and is intended to assist students in deepening their artistic craft, their
reflective musical creation, and their musical performance and to prepare them for possible postgraduate studies.
An independent degree project will document the advanced knowledge, skills, and experience in which students
have reflected on their own artistic work from artistic and scientific perspectives. Second-cycle studies are based
on the personal qualifications of students, where various artistic, academic, and personal perspectives are
explored. Students have the opportunity to develop their own approaches and personal profile using these new
skills and experiences.

7. Additional information
Students will evaluate the programme’s courses anonymously in writing at the end of each term. At the
programme’s conclusion, students will evaluate it in its entirety anonymously in writing. Regular reviews of the
programme are conducted by following up course evaluations, revising course and programme syllabuses and
other quality assurance work.
