Nevertheless, the temperature hit 80 degrees on Wednesday. So we were surprised Thursday to receive an email from our insurance company cautioning us on how to deal with ice jams. The email also had helpful suggestions on removing snow from the rooftop — don’t climb a ladder under it, use a snow rake — and keeping your home warm. The email arrived on a day when the temperature was in the 60s. Tips on barbecue safety would have been more useful. No hyphen in email Email inventor Ray Tomlinson, the Amsterdam native and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute graduate who died last weekend, was unassuming about his breakthrough, although he insisted on one thing: that email be written without a hyphen separating e and mail. One person who worked with him recalled last week that “he fought against people referring to email as e-mail with the hyphen, (and) evangelized on the topic ...” We were among those slow to drop the hyphen. The Associated Press waited nearly four decades after email came on the scene to drop it, which it did five years ago this month. The school plans to distribute pizza pies and educational activities to 150 middle school students in Schenectady, Troy and Albany, according to a news release. Dubbed the “Pi Patrol,” the vehicle will stop at Schenectady’s Mont Pleasant Middle School, Troy Middle School and Albany’s William S. Hackett Middle School throughout the day. Lori Van Buren / Times Union Stephen Tobin is president of Yankee Trails World Travel, a family-owned business in East Greenbush, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Yankee Trails cruising between the bus and ship Company celebrates 60 years with expansion into Florida By Eric Anderson East Greenbush Yankee Trails World Travel still moves hundreds of state workers a day by bus between parking lots and offices. But it has also developed a lucrative travel business, featuring buses with leather seats, tray tables, hardwood floors, Wi-Fi, power outlets at each seat and flatscreen TVs. As the family-owned company prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary, it has embarked on a geographic expansion as well. Visit The Villages mature adult community in central Florida, and you’re likely to see a Yankee Trails bus moving people to their cruise ships along the Florida coast. The company has offered a similar service for a decade in the Capital Region. But Florida sees far more cruises than northeast ports, thus the effort to expand. “The plan is to grow the business down there just like we did up here,” said Stephen Tobin, the company’s president. The Cruise Express, as the trips are called, takes Capital Region passengers from Yankee Trails’ headquarters on Third Avenue Extension in East Greenbush directly to the pier in New York City or Cape Liberty, N.J., where the cruise ship is docked. When the ship returns, the bus is waiting. The Florida initiative, while not yet profitable, is growing rapidly. Last year, the five buses Yankee Trails uses moved 1,000 passengers. This year the number was 1,800. But cruises aren’t the only op- Courtesy Yankee Trails World Travel Yankee Trails updated its buses with leather seats, power outlets and Wi-Fi. portunity Yankee Trails sees. “We offer spring training (trips) for the baseball teams down there,” said Jeff Adams, the company’s director of marketing. “Midweek is open and the buses are sitting down there.” Adams and Tobin see plenty of room for growth in the cruise business. “Eighty percent of Albany area Please see Trails e6 ▶ Knowing tax breaks and educational expenses Here is a letter from a reader in New York: “There appear to be three ways to file and get credit for educational expenses: The American Opportunity Credit, lifetime learning credit and the standard tuition and fee deductions. What are the pros and cons and requirements of each?” Education tax breaks are important to understand, but they are hardly simple or straightforward. A lot depends on your personal situation. Here are a few guidelines: First, there are income caps. Julie Jason RetiRe SecuRe You cannot claim a lifetime learning credit if you earn $65,000 or more (single filers), or $130,000 or more (joint return). When I’m using the term “earn,” I’m talking about “modified adjusted gross income,” or MAGI. Your MAGI is your gross income plus any taxexempt interest income. You’ll find that figure on your Individ- ual Tax Return Form 1040 (line 38) (or line 22 of Form 1040A). The American Opportunity Tax Credit has a slightly higher income cap: $90,000 for single filers or $180,000 for joint filers. Thus, if your earnings qualify you for the LLC, you also qualify for the AOC, but you cannot use both credits for the same student (nor can you take the tuition and fees deduction for the same student). The AOC credit can be as high as $2,500, and the LLC up to $2,000. The AOC is a refundable credit; the LLC is not. (If you don’t normally file a tax return and you qualify for a refundable credit, you’ll get a check in the mail from the U.S. Treasury.) You can claim both credits on the same tax return, but not for the same student. Second, the expenses you want to claim for the credit have to be “qualified education expenses,” which are generally tuition and fees “required for the student’s enrollment or attendance at an eligible educational institution,” according to the IRS. The IRS definition of eligible educational institution is: “generally any accredited public, nonprofit, or proprietary (private) college, university, vocational school, or other postsecondary institution.” The LLC applies to postsecondary education or courses to improve job skills. The AOC is limited to four years of postsecondary education. Third, the student also must qualify. The AOC is more restrictive than the LLC. A student cannot take advantage of the AOC if: 1. The student had completed the first four years of postsecondary education as of the beginning Please see Jason e2 ▶ BUSINESS e6 ∙ Sunday, March 13, 2016 FOR THE RECORD COMMERCIAL DEEDS ips ■ SARATOGA COUNTY Gabryshak Constructions Inc., buyer Sll: fal naal mgag Assca A : $102,500 Ppy: 13 mcha ra rc: fb. 8 STATE TAX WARRANTS ■ RENSSELAER COUNTY ips Susan E. Yankee Trails was named Tour Operator of the Year in 2015 by Norwegian Cruise Lines, an award Tobin and Adams proudly displayed during a recent interview. The growth in the cruise business comes as Yankee Trails deals with shifts in the casino business. “We used to go to Atlantic City every day,” Tobin said. Now, the company operates trips once or twice a month. Yankee Trails runs a full-service travel agency that books the cruises and provides the bus transportation. albany, new york It also books shows, concerts and sporting events. Multi-day trips to such destinations as Cape Cod and Chicago also are offered, with prices from $629 per person for a double at the cape to $1,199 per person for a double in Chicago. The company operates a fleet of about 50 buses and has 100 employees. Not every trip is solely by bus. For Costa Rica, the bus takes you to the plane. Upcoming shows on the Yankee Trails schedule include the induction ceremonies for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to be held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and Coldplay at Gillette Stadium outside Boston. Oh, and if you didn’t get to Florida for spring training, the company has a full slate of trips to Yankees, Red Sox and Mets games this summer. ▶ [email protected] EDUCATION ∙ TIMeS unIon C sy Yak tals Wl tavl upgas h l’s b ss als a haw lg.
