On
July 4th, I will be running the Peachtree Road Race with Rabbis Berg and Rau (Rabbi Spinrad is
representing us at camp and Cantor Hartman is recovering from her foot surgery). I pray that, as
you read this, we are diligently training and preparing to run the entire ten kilometers!
I will admit that I don’t really like to run, but I like the feeling after running. This 10K became my post-baby
fitness goal because I wanted a target. Now that I am running with two of my colleagues, I am accountable in a
different way. I have positive peer pressure knowing that I have made a commitment with them to do this (and
by publicly writing about it here, I’m increasing the stakes).
Community has this power. We often speak about the power of community in terms of our actions as a
group. When we gather in numbers to repair the world, we have a greater impact than if we acted as individuals. Through community, we experience Jewish life in profound ways—study, worship, travel to Israel, pursuit
of social justice, and more.
Yet there is another piece to community: the influence we exert on one another. Next time you’re at services,
notice the peer pressure. As more people sing and participate, the group follows. When the majority is quiet
or unengaged, the group often follows. When we are accountable to a community, when we are asked to do
something or we voluntarily commit to do something, we follow through more because we know that people
depend upon us.
I invite each of us to consider the power our Temple community has
in this way. How can we positively influence one another? And how can
we take that influence to the next level? How can we use the accountability community provides to grow as Jews and human beings?
We are increasingly speaking about the ways that relationships
drive our Temple family, something you’ll hear about more in the
coming months. I hope that as we grow in these relationships with
one another, we support one another in our goals, whether they are
overtly connected to the Jewish community, such as learning or celebrating Shabbat, or are more subtly connected to our Jewish identity,

The Temple Book Club

Once We Were Brothers by Ron Balsam
The gripping tale about two boys, once as close as
brothers, who find themselves on opposite sides of
the Holocaust.
Elliot Rosenzweig, a respected civic leader and
wealthy philanthropist, is attending a fundraiser
when he is suddenly accosted and accused of
being a former Nazi SS officer named Otto Piatek,
the Butcher of Zamosc. Although the charges are
denounced as preposterous, his accuser is convinced he is right and engages
attorney Catherine Lockhart to bring Rosenzweig to justice. Solomon persuades
attorney Catherine Lockhart to take his case, revealing that the true Piatek was
abandoned as a child and raised by Solomon's own family only to betray them
during the Nazi occupation. But has Solomon accused the right man?
The Temple Book Club will take a break in July and August and resume on
September 9, 2014.

Mini Shabbat Mornings with a SPLASH!
June 7 • July 12 • August 9
Infants through preschoolers and their families are invited to join us at 9:30 am
in the Covenant Chapel for singing and a story with our puppets, followed by a
bagel snack and then playground time. Since it's summer, we will have the splash
pad on Sonia's playground up and running (and if it rains, we'll play in the WELC
Indoor playgrounds). Please come dressed casually and bring towels if your child
plans to splash. No RSVP required, and questions can go to Rabbi Loren Filson

Sandwich Salon-Woman Connecting &
Learning held its 2nd 'lunch & learn' on April
29 and it was another great success! Over 40
women participated in a lively conversation
with Steak Shapiro about the restaurant and
dining scene in Atlanta. Steak talked about
his local show, Atlanta Eats and also about
his upcoming new series on Food Network—
set to air this fall. It was fun to hear from
Atlanta's best eater!

Breman Religious School Registration is Open!
The Temple Breman Religious School begins August 24 for pre-kindergarten
through 10th grade. We would love to speak with you about our school. TBRS

The Temple family came out in full to celebrate Ronnie van Gelder's 25 years of professional
service to our congregation. Clad in black and white to fit the keys of the talented Dueling
Pianos from Philadelphia, 330 guests paid tribute to Ronnie's love and devotion to our
Temple family. A musical tribute led by Cantor Hartman, with a special appearance by
Pamela Alexander set the tone of the joyous evening. A dazzling decor by Event Savvy, a
scrumptious dinner by Sandra Bank, Added Touch Catering, and most of all, the heartfelt
sentiments filling the room, made it a night to remember! Extra special thanks go to Event
Co-chairs Debbie Neese and Linda Selig and their committee for making this event a
wonderful highlight of this year.

What a fabulous event! Thank you so much for the amazing tribute dinner. I cannot say
enough about the creativity and organization skills of Debbie Neese and Linda Selig,
co-chairs of the event. They are the best. In twenty-five years of events here at The Temple,
I have never seen our event space look more beautiful. I know that committee members
Pamela Alexander, Juli Bauman, Linda Davis, Janet Dortch, Lila Hertz, Libby Johnson, Ray
Kuniansky, Janet Lavine, Kelly Miller, Belinda Morris, Valerie Needle, Carol Nemo, Scott

Blessing Bag Project
Sunday, June 15th at 1pm
Dear friends,
The success of our Interfaith Anti-sex Trafficking Passover Seder was a key component
in our multifaceted campaign to end slavery in our city and in our world, and we are
asking for your support in our congregation’s next direct action.
In addition to the Seder’s successful outcomes of raising awareness among the people of Atlanta and building a stronger network of key stakeholders committed to the
issue (including institutions of faith, direct service providers, elected officials and law
enforcement), The Temple is also taking aim at root causes such as poverty and hunger that directly and indirectly contribute to women and girls (and occasionally boys)
being trafficked into lives of sexual servitude. A hungry child or teen is
more vulnerable to being fooled by a predator's seemingly innocent act of buying them a meal, potentially leading to nightmarish
outcomes. To reduce this vulnerability and in partnership
with StreetGRACE, the Fulton County School system and
other local faith organizations, The Temple is proud to
host the Blessing Bag Project on Sunday, June 15th at 1pm.
Blessing Bags provide non-perishable food during
Spring and Summer Break for at-risk children in the
geographic vicinity of our congregation at a time when
children often go hungry. We are committed to filling
2,000 of these bags and we are asking for your help to do
it. Please consider making a difference for an at-risk child
or teen in one or more of the following ways:
• Help us to underwrite the cost of the food items with
your generous contributions. Checks may be payable
to The Temple. Please write "For Blessing Bags" in
the memo line. Credit cards are also accepted.
• Mark your calendar for Sunday, June 15th at 1pm and help
fill bags at The Temple. A small number of volunteers are also needed to help
load in the food items on the evening of Saturday, June 14th.
• Share details of this event with friends and invite them to participate.
