A Newsletter for the Willistown United Methodist Church
Mission Statement: To welcome all people, share Christ's love, and be disciples who make disciples.
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I
am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift
of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if
I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am
nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to
hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
1 Corinthians 13 is often read at weddings. It's thought of
traditionally as speaking of romantic love. A man and woman
joining together on their wedding day are sharing in this kind of love and therefore it is
appropriate to speak of the love that they have for each other as referenced so poetically in 1
Corinthians. This passage even goes on to speak of putting away childish things, a reference,
we think, to the growing up that comes with marriage. But is it possible that this scripture
refers to a different kind of love.
Valentines Day is during the month of February, a holiday that celebrates love. People give
chocolates, send flowers, find the perfect card, remember the love of their lives who gave them
many years of wonderful memories. And this scripture is heralded as the hallmark of how to
love the person God has given to us. However the scripture is not about human love. It is an
example of how God first loved us.
Read the scripture in its fullness again. This time read it without the trappings of romantic
love, but rather with God in mind. If we do all the wonderful things the scripture talks of but
do not have the love of God where are we? If we do not put away childish things as the
scripture asks of us when it comes to God we will miss the more grown up things of God’s
love. We will be forever lost in confusion and forever longing for the things of this world
rather then the more heavenly things that God can show us. 1 Corinthians 13 talks of a much
more profound love then the one we have made it to speak of. This February let us read it
anew.

The Adult Bible Study, Sunday School Class, is continuing to meet each Sunday at 9:00 A.M. We
have had many interesting lessons and discussions and all are invited to be a part of this class. Right
now we are continuing our study of the Book of Phillipians written by the Apostle Paul. Our hardy trio
of teachers includes Jane Jeffrey CSM, Doris King, and Alan Clark
Thirty members and friends of our church attended the
January METHODIST BREAKFAST. Our speaker was Rob Lukens,
President of the Chester County Historical Society. Rob had planned
to be a geologist but while serving as an intern at the society, found a
new calling and after several years of service and many other
positions, he returned he returned to the society and was promoted to
the society's president last year.
The society includes 500.000 documents and 80,000 photographs. It's
focus is education. A large part of their mission is the loan of material to other
organizations for display, including the Philadelphia Constitution Center and
Winterthur. Their outreach includes speakers to school and other organizations. It also
oversees the Chester County archives.
Our outstanding breakfast was prepared by Chef Kim Pierce and her mighty crew, Betty
Barlow andJane VanZandt.
This month's METHODIST BREAKFAST is the 10th. Our speaker is Carole Fair, a
kidney transplant recipient and author of book "Transplanted To Better Health".
Carole, from Mechanicsburg will tell us of her "Two Birthdays".
I am sorry that I omitted, in error, Beth Southern and Ann Clark as
bell ringers for the Salvation Army in our January Newsletter.
They worked the first two hours of the day and did a good job in
getting us underway. Thank you Beth, and thank you, Ann. Alan

will be in the mail in the next two weeks or so but it would not hurt, even
now, to lets friends and neighbors know of our evening coming up. Keep in
mind the take outs that we offer to those who have another committment.
Spaghetti for some is even good the following night after it is heated up.

Did you know there are almost 7 billion
human beings on Planet Earth? And yet,
every soul born is new and precious to God.
He has designed each one to be a special,
one-of-a-kind treasure. As you celebrate
your birthday, take a moment to close your
eyes and imagine yourself being shaped and
molded in God’s mighty hands. He made
you and loves you in a way no one else ever
could. On this day and every day in the
coming year, lift your faith to Him and
smile.
