FOR ALL LEVELS
PAVE™ is a warm-up program used by all students. It uses scan and flash activities to build
visual skills and visual memory, the most basic skills necessary for fluent and efficient reading
and improved spelling. Students should be positioned about 18 inches from the screen to
properly develop near-point visual skills.
Scan – Students are asked to count the number of times a “target” element (number or letter)
appears on the screen as three random elements are presented in a left-to-right manner. The
initial speed of the scan is determined by student grade level, and increases, remains stable, or
decreases based on correct responses, with 120 lines per minute as the maximum.
Scan Training
Flash – During a series of ten exposures, a set of one to nine elements (numbers, uppercase
letters or lowercase letters) is flashed at 1/6 of a second. The initial number of elements is
determined by student grade level, and increases as the students correctly type in what was
seen.

The scan and flash activities are both motivating and challenging, and also require exacting
scrutiny of the numbers and/or letters to which students are exposed. Further, the task of
retaining the number or letter combinations that are flashed requires prolonged concentration
to retain accuracy of perception.

Flash Training
Through PAVE™, students quickly and easily develop the capacity to see letters and numbers
presented randomly and in proper sequence. Scan training with letters and numbers develops
basic letter recognition skills. Flash training with numbers or letter groups helps develop
increased awareness of the left-to-right configuration of the elements presented. In these
flashed exposures, students get only one glimpse of a configuration, for there is no time to
move their eyes. Thus, they develop the ability to accurately identify the elements flashed and
their sequential order in a single fixation.
Benefits: PAVE™ increases visual memory by building visual skills and by training
