This book is dedicated to my amazing family. Thank you to my wonderful
husband, Scott, who ate a lot of leftovers, listened to a lot of whining
(from me!), and sent lots of positive energy my way. Thank you to my
daughter, Shelby, who truly inspired me through her love for learning.
Thank you to my parents, Judy and Billy Trout, who taught me to trust in
my abilities and to never give up.

How do I get started?
First, you will want to gather your supplies.
*** Assembly:
*Folders: We use colored file folders, which can be found at Walmart,
Sam’s, Office Depot, Costco, etc. You will need between 1 and 4 file folders,
depending on which product you have purchased. You may use manila folders if
you prefer, but we have found that children respond better with the brightly
colored folders. Don’t worry about the tabs….they aren’t important. Within this
product, you will be given easy, step-by-step instructions for how to fold and
assemble these folders. If you prefer, you can purchase the assembled lapbook
bases from our website.
*Glue: For the folder assembly, we use hot glue. For booklet
assembly, we use glue sticks and sometimes hot glue, depending on
the specific booklet. We have found that bottle glue stays wet for too
long, so it’s not a great choice for lapbooking. For gluing the folders together, we
suggest using hot glue, but ONLY with adult supervision.
These things get SUPER hot, and can cause SEVERE
burns within seconds.
*Other Supplies: Of course, you will need scissors.
Many booklets require additional supplies. Some of these
include metal brad fasteners, paper clips, ribbon, yarn, staples, hole puncher, etc.
You may want to add decorations of your own, including stickers,
buttons, coloring pages, cut-out clipart, etc. Sometimes, we even
use scrapbooking supplies. The most important
thing is to use your imagination! Make it your own!!
Continue ON……..
Ok. I’ve gathered the supplies. Now how do I use this
product?
Inside, you will find several sections. They are as follows:
1. Lapbook Assembly Guide: This section gives instructions and diagrams
will tell the student exactly how to assemble the lapbook base and where to
glue each booklet into the base. Depending on the student’s age, he or she may
need assistance with this process, especially if you choose to allow the student
to use hot glue.
2. Student Instruction Guide: This section is written directly to the student,
in language that he or she can understand. However, depending on the age of
the child, there may be some parent/teacher assistance needed. This section
will also tell the student exactly what should be written inside each booklet as
he or she comes to it during the study, as well telling the student which folder
each booklet will be glued into.
3. Lapbook Assembly Guide: This section is written directly to the student
also, in language that he or she can understand. However, as with the previous
section, depending on the age of the child, there may be some parent/teacher
assistance needed. This section will also tell the student how to cut, fold, and
assemble each booklet.
4. Teacher’s Guide: This section is a great resource for the parent/teacher.
In this section, you will find the page number where each answer may be found
in the book. You will also find suggestions of extra activities that you may
want to use with your student.
5. Booklet Templates: This section includes ALL of the templates for the
booklets. These have been printed on colors that will help to improve retention
of the information presented, according to scientific research on color
psychology.
Colors & Shapes – Why Do They Matter?
After MUCH research and studies, science has shown that colors and shapes
have psychological values. These influence the emotions and memories of
each one of us. In our products, we have used specific colors and shapes in
ways that will improve information retention and allow for a much more
mentally interactive time of study. Some pages may have a notation at the
bottom, where a specific color is suggested for your printing paper. This color
suggestion is designed to improve information retention. However, if you do
not have that specific color of paper, just print on whatever color you have.
For the most benefit, follow the color suggestions, and watch your child’s
memory and enthusiasm truly soar!
Be creative!
Make it your own!
If you would like to send pictures of your
completed lapbook, please do!
We would love to display your lapbooks on
our website and/or in our newsletter.
Just send your pictures, first initial & last
name, and age to us at:

Lapbook Assembly Guide
Inside of 1st Folder:
1.
How Many Arms Booklet: Cut out along the outer black lines, and fold in the center, so that
the title is on the front.
2.
Echinoderms Booklet: Cut out along the outer black lines, and also cut out the title label.
Accordion-fold the booklet, so that the words are all on the inside, and there is a blank on the back
and front. Glue the title label to the front.
3.
Jawless Fish Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges of the circle. Then, fold
along each line, so that the words are on the front. Fold each “flap” under the one next to it, until
you have them all secured under each other, with the words showing. Cut out the title label and put
glue only on one side of it, and secure it to one of the flaps.
4.
Bony Fishes Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges of each fish shape. Stack
them all together, with the title on top. Punch a hole through the fish eye, and secure with a metal
brad fastener.
5.
Sea Anemones and Coral Booklet: Cut out each page of the booklet along the outer black
lines. Then, stack them together, with the title on top and a blank on the back. Punch a hole in the
far left side, through all layers, and secure with a metal brad fastener or ribbon.
6.
Rays Booklet: Cut out each page along the outer black line edges. Note that each page has a
little bit longer “tab” at the top than the one before it. Stack them on top of each other, with the title
and graphic on top and each tab getting progressively longer, until you have the full page with no cut
out tab on the back. Place 2 staples through the far left edge to secure.
7.
Amazing Fact Booklet: Cut out along the outer black lines, and fold in the center, so that the
title is on the front.
8.
Lessons 6 – 8 Vocabulary Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges. Then, fold
along the center vertical line, so that the words are all on the outside. Then, fold along the other 2
vertical lines, which will now put the vocabulary words on the inside and the title on the outside.
Now cut along the dotted lines between the words, to create “flaps” to write your definitions under.
Inside of 2nd t Folder:
1.
Buoyancy Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges of each page. Then, stack the title
page on top, and staple through the black part at the tops. (This is supposed to look like a bobber/cork.)
2.
Brittle Stars Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges , and then fold along the center
line so that the title is on the front.
3.
Sea Stars Booklet: Cut out each page of the booklet along the outer black line edges. Stack the
pages together, with the title on top. Punch a hole through one of the tips, and secure with a ribbon or

line, so that the title is on top. Be sure to cut out the “purse straps” as well!
7.
Joke Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges, and then fold along the center line, so that
the title is on top.
8.
Defenses Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges of the booklet, and then accordionfold, so that the title is on top.
9.
Sponge Vocabulary Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges of the booklet. Then, fold
along the vertical line that is near the center (one side will be longer than the other), with the words
ending up on the outside. Now, fold along the other vertical line, folding it over so that it is in front of the
edge of the vocabulary words. Now, cut along the lines between the vocabulary words, creating “flaps.”
Look at the picture, to get a better idea of what this one is supposed to look like.
10.
Sea Urchins Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges. Then fold along both vertical
lines, so that the words are on the outside, and the curved areas almost touch. Punch a hole through both
small circles. Secure together with a ribbon or piece of yarn tied in a bow.
11.
Sharks Booklet: Ok. This one is going to be tricky. Follow these directions below.
Shark Pop-Up Book:
1Take a blank piece of paper, 8.5 in. x 11 in. Fold it in half. Put this aside.
Also cut out the page that has the
dark gray square on it and glue it to another blank piece of paper (8.5 X 11 in), and make sure to glue it about
where the shark’s mouth is on the other page (this will be showing through after we cut the shark’s mouth).
Now fold it in the center, as you did the other page, and put this one aside as well.
2On the page that you printed out with the shark on it, fold in half, so that the shark is on the inside.
3Draw a 1 – 1 ½ inch line from the fold out, and make sure that you are drawing this line where you can see
that the shark’s mouth is on the other side.
4Starting at the folded edge, cut on the line.
Continue ON……..
5Fold back the flaps to form two triangles.
6Open the flaps again. Open the whole page.
7Now comes the tricky part! Hold your paper, so that it looks like a tent. Put your finger on the top triangle
and push down. Pinch the two folded edges of the top triangle, so that the triangle is pushed through to the
other side of the paper.
8Put your finger on the bottom triangle and do the same thing. The top and bottom triangles will now be
pushed out to form a mouth inside the card. When you open and close your card, the mouth will look like it is
talking. When your card is closed it will look like this:
9Glue the page with the dark gray square to the page with your shark on it, making sure to keep the dark
gray square on the INSIDE of the pages. Do not apply glue in the area of the pop-up mouth.
10Now take the blank page that you folded at the beginning, and make it be the outer cover of the booklet,
with the other page that you blued and cut being in the center. The VERY CENTER of the booklet will be
the shark’s open mouth. Put a staple at the top and bottom of the crease/fold in the center. Now cut out the
title, and put it on the outside/front cover. Cut out the other information pages, and glue them inside. When
you open the booklet, you should see the “Teeth, Eyesight,” and “Sense of Smell” on the left and the “Body
Shape & Speed” and ”What do sharks eat?” on the right. The next page will be a full center spread of the
shark, and the next page will be the “Shark Orders,” one on the left and one on the right.”
Look at the detailed pictures that we provided of the completed lapbook booklet.
Continue ON……..
Inside of 3rd Folder:
1.
Crustacean Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges of all pages. Then, stack on
top of each other, with each one getting a little longer than the one before. Keep the title on the top.
Secure with one staple in the center of the top.
2.
Cartilaginous Fish Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges of all pages. Stack
them on top of each other, with the title page on the front. Punch 2 holes along the left side, and
secure with a ribbon.
3.
Jellyfish Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges of the large background page
with the graphic on it. Also, cut out the 6 small booklets. Fold each small booklet along its center
line, so that the words are on the outside. Now, glue these 6 small booklets onto the background
page, 3 in each row, so that the top row edges barely come just under the graphic. Now, fold the
entire booklet horizontally so that the word and graphic on the background page is still visible, but
the booklets are hidden on the inside.
4.

that the title is on the front. Glue together along the sides and bottom, keeping the top open for
the cards to go inside.
6.

7.
What Makes A Fish Booklet: Cut out along the outer black line edges and fold along the
center line, so that the title is on the front.
