THE cost of living increased
by 0.4 percentage points over
the past three months, according to Consumer Price Index
figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics yesterday.
Three capital cities recording a slower increase in the
cost of living compared to Darwin, while four capital cities recorded a faster rate of growth.
Property Council NT director Ruth Palmer said Darwin
has still recorded the smallest
rise over the last 12 months.
“The oversupply of residential stock and the drop in rental
prices will continue to help
Territorians with the cost of
living and should in turn help
with our population retention
and growth,” she said.
Ms Palmer said the drop in
rental prices could help keep
people in Darwin in coming
years. The ABS figures showed
Darwin rental prices dropped
by 1 per cent in the last three
months and Ms Palmer said
that trend could continue
through the wet season.

A MOTHER of three and her
partner have been charged
over an alleged drugs ring
with links to remote Territory
communities.
Karlla Maree Garling, 25,
and Liam Christopher Booth,
27, appeared in Darwin Magistrates Court yesterday on
drug charges following a
dawn raid on a Palmerston
property on Tuesday.
Police allege two seizures
of methamphetamines and a
third of cannabis since early
September by officers from
Task Force Nemesis are
linked to the pair.
The raid was the culmination of a five-month investigation.
Police found 150g of methamphetamines in a car travelling from Alice Springs to
Darwin on October 7 and 50g
at a property in Marrara on
September 1.
Police seized 1.3kg of cannabis during a raid on a property in Gunn on October 20.

four vehicles, a stolen firearm,
unsecured ammunition, a set
of knuckle dusters and fireworks.
Police arrested Garling
during the raid and telephoned Booth asking him to
hand himself in.
He was arrested at Palmerston police station at
around midday on Tuesday.
Police said the pair were in
a relationship and Garling
had three children.
Booth was charged with
eight drug offences, including
supplying a commercial
amount of methamphetamines.
He was also charged with
five weapons offences.
Yesterday, Booth was refused bail at Darwin Magistrates Court.
Defence lawyer Tom Kaye
said his client, born and raised
in the NT, had handed himself in and wasn’t a flight risk.
Mr Kaye said Booth’s
mother was prepared to put
up $6000 cash surety.
But Magistrate Greg Cavanagh said: “It’s a very
strong Crown case – they’ve
got him on the telephone left,
right and centre.
“He’s charged with largescale drug trafficking in Darwin and remote communities
and has extreme motivation
not to turn up (to court).”
Booth was remanded in
custody for mention on December 16.
Garling, facing charges of
unlawfully supplying cannabis, was granted bail to appear
in court on November 23.

Superintendent Clint Sims
said more arrests could be expected.
“Police will allege the pair
was involved in a syndicate
that profited from the sale of
methamphetamines in the
Darwin area and the sale of
cannabis to remote communities around the Territory,” he said.
