Unit of Study: Fractions and Decimals

Instruction/Classroom Activities:
Small Group Instruction:
• The teacher will review numbers 1-20, counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s with the students.
• The teacher will introduce vocabulary cards with the words fraction, numerator, denominator, ½,
1/3, ¼, and whole.
• Watch the streaming video- The Number Crew: Action with Fractions.
• Give each student 4 pieces of construction paper, a pair of scissors, and a crayon. The teacher will
model and the students will follow direction. On one sheet write 1 whole and the students will do
the same or have students trace. On the second sheet, the teacher will model by folding the paper
in half, the students will follow, then cut on the line and have the students do the same, and then
write ½ on each sheet and the students will do so. On the third paper, fold into thirds, cut on each
line, and write 1/3 on each. With the fourth sheet, fold into fourths, cut, and write ¼ on each.
Make sure to help the students with folding, cutting, or writing when needed. Once finished,
staple all together to make a flip book.
