Issue: #4 ‘In Giving, We Receive’, from “When I Got Busy, I Got Better”: p. 7 “A friend tells about an experience that opened her eyes to Al-Anon’s place in her life. One evening she sat debating whether to attend a meeting or stay home. The weather was bad, she felt tired, and she could think of projects that seemed pressing. At the moment she was deciding that perhaps she’d stay home, a thought about Al-Anon came to mind: This is where hearts are healed. That simple thought gave her the motivation necessary to set her own concerns aside and get to a meeting.” The Serenity Sentinel, a quarterly publication, is the voice of the Michigan Area Assembly. A complimentary subscription is issued to all AFG groups registered with the Michigan Assembly, District Representatives, Assembly Officers, and Coordinators. Please direct any comments or questions regarding the Serenity Sentinel to the Editor. Please send all group information changes to our MIAFG Area Group Records Coordinator. Recently I downloaded the newly available e-book, Courage to Change (eB-16), finding it a quality product, well worth the money spent. The table of contents is comprised of the days of the year (i.e.: Jan 1 is page 6, Jan 2 is page 8), continuing through December 31. Due to formatting, some of the readings extend a sentence or two on the next page, so the book totals 580 total pages, along with the Preamble, Steps, etc. The downside to this format, is no index for a ‘key word’ search. Wondering how many of our local AFG’s order booklets, pamphlet for their libraries, then fail to read them? I admit I’m guilty! The booklet, “When I Got Busy, I Got Better” (p-78) is a hidden gem. Sixty pages of excellent reading, on various topics. Please look into this booklet, and other resources that might be feeling neglected in your CAL library! “Let it begin with me. WSC Delegate Report to the AWSC Thank you all “for your commitment to Al-Anon”. As Alcoholism is a threefold disease; Recovery from the effects of alcoholism is three fold also – The AlAnon/Alateen Legacies - Recovery through The Steps, Unity through The Traditions and Service through The Concepts. We all come together to exchange information for and from the World Service Conference (WSC). The Group Representative is the most important person at Assembly, who receives a lot of information to take back and share with their groups. Are you receiving information from your Group Representative (GR)? Who is your Group Representative? Besides receiving information at Assembly; the Group Representative receives information directly from the World Service Office (WSO) via Group E-News. You also have opportunities to let your Area Officers, Coordinators and Delegate know about your group’s thoughts, wishes and concerns, that we may communicate them to the World Service Conference & Office. Please feel free to contact any of your trusted servants anytime by phone or e-mail. Please be aware of the time of day that you may be calling. May we all use the Spiritual Principles of the Program to help us with our discussions and decisions (presume good will). We are all here to help each other to succeed. As the Group Representative attends Assembly; the District Representative Attends the Area World Service Committee (AWSC) meetings and is the most important person at the Area World Service Committee meeting. They too, bring back information from the Area and the World Service Conference that is communicated between Assemblies. The District Representative shares this information with your Group Representatives at District Meetings so that your Group Representative can share it with you in your Group. Do you know who your District Representative is? Good news! We have several new Groups: Grosse Pointe AFG, Grosse Pointe- Hope for Joy AFG, Marine City – Port City AFG, Muskegon, plus three new Alateen meetings: Together We Can Make a Difference Alateen, Holly – Hope, Sharing Alateen, Davidson and Courage To Be Me Alateen, Ann Arbor. WSO has also contacted a couple of your AISs in Michigan with information on facilities that would like to have AlAnon meetings started there. A summary of recent happenings include the Budget Committee meeting, Policy Committee meeting, A.A. Convention in Kalamazoo, Fall Assembly, AWSC, Trustee Call, 44th Annual Convention host committee meetings, and AFG Connects. At the budget committee meeting we hammered out a budget for MI AFG in 2016. You may wonder; who is on the budget committee? Get with your District Representative and look in the MI AFG Policy handbook. A.A. held their annual State Convention in Battle Creek this year with a full Al-Anon program. It was a great convention. I would like to thank Janice M. for all her hard work in putting together the Al-Anon program, and Grant for giving a great Alateen talk. I was told, the main Al-Anon speaker did well. I was too busy being the speaker to hear what was said; I am very grateful that recovery is about progress not perfection. At AWSC your new Chairperson – Matt D. and Treasurer – Jodi B., elected at Spring Assembly, had their first experience in their new service positions. They did great. We had our usual business of reports from your Officers, Coordinators and Liaisons for your District Representatives to bring back to you and share at your District meetings. I had a phone call from your Trustee at Large, Connie H. The main topic was the July Chairman of the Board of Trustee letter. The one thing that jumped out a me in the letter is that it started with, Dear Al-Anon and Alateen Members, and goes on to explain that this letter is intended for all Al-Anon members. Copies are available to take back and share with your Groups. Your 44th Annual MI AFG Convention is in good hands. Sandy and Janet are doing a great job with their host committee. We have met several times and the planning is coming together very well. World Service Office did get AFG Connects up and running. Officers, Coordinators and District Representatives should all be on line now along with Enews for the Group Representatives. The old ECommunities program ended on December 31, 2015. Also the Al-Anon Family Groups website now has a nationwide meeting search engine so the Area and local websites can link to it and eliminate the continual updating of their webpages. In with Concept Ten “Service responsibility is balanced by carefully defined service authority and doubleheaded management is avoided.” Please make sure your Group’s information is correct with Michigan AFG for your Area Records Coordinator will be the one putting your group’s information into the AFG data base. Several members and your World Service Office (WSO) have contacted me about some events that are going on here in our Area (Michigan) and across the country. I’m finding from other Delegates on the AFG Connects, many groups are having issues with members bringing in “other affiliations” into meetings and District Representatives are having a hard time with attendance at district meetings. Ask your Group Representative, “What are other Affiliations?” and attend your District meetings. All Members are welcome (including Dual members) at District meetings with voice but no vote; only Group “Let it begin with me. When Anyone, Anywhere reaches out for help, Let the hand of Al-Anon and Alateen always be there, and Let It Begin With Me” Representatives vote (Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual (P-24/27). MIAFG.org now has an E-Commerce (Pay Pal) button on the members’ page for more convenient donations by individuals and groups. I have used it myself and it was very simple. “Keep it Simple”, works for me. And if members would like to have automatic monthly donations, we can work on that also. On October 10th, we had Fall Assembly where, we had one of your Trustees from the World Service Conference Jennie M. She did a workshop from an exercise at this year’s Conference, “The Big Question”. Jennie also shared her experience, strength and hope on her journey through recovery. At lunch and after we ended, Jennie talked with many members about many different topics and helped them to understand the workings of the Board of Trustees and WSO. A “TEAM EVENT” or “Meet the Board” would help all of the membership get the information and understanding that those few were able to get in such a short time. I think we should all thank her for taking the time away from her family to be with us and for doing such a great job on her presentation. Your Action Committees also did a great job. The Spotlight was on Alateen and Group Services. I received a phone call from WSO regarding a phone call received from a distraught member. The member wanted someone, “from higher up”, to come to their meeting and straighten out the old timers from dominating the meetings and group conscious. WSO tried to give the member some ideas on what could be done but that WSO has no authority over groups. WSO is simply the world’s largest AIS/LDC. They do have information that can help the groups but the members are the ultimate authority in AlAnon. I would like to let all of you know that your Officers and Coordinators are here to help you and your Groups succeed. All of us are willing and eager to come to your meetings or events, when we are invited, to help in any means possible; difficulties, service positions/structure, Traditions, Concepts, anonymity, autonomy, affiliations, etc… We can share their experience, strength and hope about healthy groups; but still we have no authority over any groups as it is the members of the group that have the authority. I have been privileged to have been invited to two AIS events recently and learned that we are very diverse in the way we put events together. Both were very well done but very different and I learned good things from both of them; funny how that works. I also received a phone call from a member wanting to know why Al-Anon left out steps 7, 8 and 9 in a workshop by Arleen S. that they had found on the internet. I was caught off guard and had to tell the member that I had no idea what they were talking about and that anyone can put anything on the internet. In further research I found that the member was talking about an app like a speaker tape. The recordings on it were compiled and published by a private company having no affiliation with Al-Anon. I contacted WSO about my findings but was unable to contact the member to let them know my findings. This is a good example illustrating why we only use Conference Approved Literature in our meetings. Al-Anon cannot control what is on the internet but in meetings, members should only find CAL. 2016 North Central Regional Delegates’ Meeting is being held in Itasca, IL. Growing Through Service Mike D, MI AFG WSC Delegate Michigan AFG Treasurer’s Report available by request from Jodi B Have you made a Pay Pal donation, yet? Mail all donations to: MIAFG, Inc, PO Box 13165, Lansing MI 48901 Michigan AFG AAPP Report There are 22 Alateen groups registered at this time. We have 91 registered AMIAS as of Nov 12, 2015. DR’s, please do send me any updates for Alateen meetings that you are aware of in your districts. A special note to ‘inactive groups’ will be sent out, asking that they contact me and update status and registration information, if they’re active. Yours In Service, Marti W Report of the Area Alateen Coordinator (Area 27) There is an event that happens twice a year, in the spring, and fall. No, I’m not talking about adjusting our clocks, I’m talking about the semi-annual Alateen Lock-In at Dawn Farms, in Ypsilanti. Alateens, and their sponsors, come from places as diverse as Detroit, Waterford, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and “Let it begin with me. When Anyone, Anywhere reaches out for help, Let the hand of Al-Anon and Alateen always be there, and Let It Begin With Me” points between, and meet for a night of fun activities, where no one tells them they have to go to sleep, and they are free to do what they want, within the very clearly delineated boundaries set for them by their sponsors. The most recent lock-In took place Saturday, November 7, 2015. Teens started to trickle in just before 4:00 p.m., and by the end of the evening, 16 teens were in attendance. There were 13 Sponsors present, and although we were “outnumbered”, the teens were extremely well-behaved. There was plenty of food for the teens, including healthy (and some less healthy) snacks for them to enjoy as the evening wore on. The experienced sponsors who wanted to spend the night, supplied their bedding, and were mostly asleep by midnight. The kids continued their activities unabated, until much later, but eventually most of the kids relented, and went to sleep. By all accounts, the event was a rousing success. In the morning, the teens helped to clean up the place, in an effort to leave the place in a little bit better shape than we found it. The parents came promptly at the appointed time to pick up their children. No one got hurt, and everyone there revealed that it was a positive experience for them. We will do it again, God willing, in the spring. I’m already looking forward to it. Thank you for reading this. Grateful in Service, Andy G. Archives Coordinator Hugh W Greetings: The Archives are progressing nicely. I would like to make groups history a focus for this year. I’ve requested that a copy of AR-1 be included in this Serenity Sentinel, as a guideline for all group histories to be written. I will accept them via E-MAIL, or Snail Mail. Please refer to the Trusted Servants page for contact information. What’s currently in our Archives are some early group histories from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, a few ‘80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Renee would most likely have newer registrations of the 80’s and ‘90’s groups. Let’s see if we can get a great collection of Group Histories going, as I look to the past to preserve the Future. In Service. Hugh Web Coordinator Updates from Jamie H: The site was updated as of 11-10-15, and I am working on reorganizing the Meeting pages for easier use, including implementing suggestions offered by members (ie: list meetings per city, per day and time). Starting the first of 2016, work will begin to revamp; the website. Intent is to make it more user-friendly, as well as different devicecompatible. Feedback/suggestions for the website made at Fall Assembly are being read, though not totally complete at time of writing this report. Social Media Thought Force: During Fall Assembly, several surveys were returned, and currently organizing to share with other thought force members. Plan to have this done by next AWSC meeting in March. Anyone interested is welcome to join the Thought Force! Thanks for the opportunity to serve AWSC Chairperson Report: Matt D As always, it’s been busy since Fall Assembly! Policy Committee meeting was held 10-17-15 at Lansing’s Alano Club Several topics discussed and recommendations made, to be shared at AWSC. Conducted audit of equipment inventory, and all is accounted for. Appointed by Delegate, Mike Drumheller, as AWSC liaison to 2017 AlAnon/Alateen State Convention with AA participation which will be in Kalamazoo, May 19-21, 2017. Our 2016 AWSC meeting dates were set up: March 12, August 13 and November 12. The Spring and Fall Assembly dates are Saturday, June 11 and October 8. WSO had a Real Property Management Executive opening, with resume due 11-30-15. Hope everyone had a great Holiday Season. See you in 2016! In grateful service. Ann M. Share: "Tradition 11 states our policy is one of 'attraction rather than promotion'. There is something precious and sweet about offering an opportunity to someone without being attached to whether they accept it or not". (p. 113 of Progress for Personal Recovery). This is hard to do, for me. Rather than being detached, I have been attached to see if my idea is going to be the winner. I grew up in a family where something wasn't a good idea unless it was your own. What warped thinking! In my own recovery, I have spoken up if someone has given input to thank them. In my own recovery, I've stopped counting a separate score for the number of times I've won or lost the idea for the whole group. As a matter of fact, a former sponsor told me flat out to stop counting. What's important here is staying focused on our primary purpose. Am I doing the will of my HP? Am I keeping the focus on my own business? I've learned to share it, and not to sell it. Others may want what I've gotten through my own work on the Legacies. I'm calmer today. There were long timers at my first meetings, and I wanted what they had. Those old farts weren't selling it to me. I was looking for peace and serenity. I wanted to laugh again. They told me to keep coming back. I listened, and I learned. When can I apply the principle of "attraction rather than promotion" in my personal life? Please reflect on this question. “Let it begin with me.
