AZTEC HIGHLIGHTS
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL 6A STATE CHAMPIONS!
It was a fabulous finish for the 3rd-seeded Corona del Sol girls’ volleyball team, which swept No. 5-seed
Mountain Pointe, 25-13, 25-21, 25-15, to capture the AIA 6A state championship at Mesquite High School last
night. The Aztecs advanced to the last round after a hard-fought, semi-final victory Tuesday night over
perennial powerhouse Xavier. In the championship match, senior outside hitter Erica Ronda had a doubledouble, with 15 kills and 16 digs. Senior middle hitter Lauren Forte contributed 11 kills, while junior outside
hitter Brooke Nuneviller added 8 kills and junior Emma West had 10 kills. Solid setting from Abby Meyer and
Madi Reum, strong passing from senior libero Cam Tucker and great net play by senior Jess Murphy and
freshman Mady Noble all contributed to the Aztec victory. Also a big part of the Aztecs’ highly-successful
season: seniors Logan Wallerstedt, Keelan Nelson, Brooke O’Meara, juniors Allie Wade, Isis Mitchell and Lexi
Vlcek. Congratulations to Coach Ben Maxfield and the entire girls’ volleyball program.

the school day. Please help us keep our campus secure and remind your students to wear IDs.
Attendance Line: When your student is absent, please remember the Attendance office needs to be called
within 48 hours of the absence. Always include your student’s ID number as occasionally we cannot
understand the student’s name in your message. When the ID number is included, we can quickly locate your
student’s information and properly excuse the absence.
Reminder: The Corona del Sol front office will no longer hold items for students to pick up. The exception is
your student’s ID. Please make arrangements to meet your student between classes to give other
items/lunch/money to them during passing periods. Below are our typical passing times. Early-release days

Attendance Policy: High school attendance is ultimately the responsibility of the student and his/her family. It
is important that parents and students recognize the direct relationship that exists between academic success
and regular school attendance. Students should remain out of school only when necessary. Students are
allowed 10 absences (excused or unexcused) per semester. The eleventh total absence may result in loss of
credit, unless there are extenuating circumstances. School-related absences do not count toward your
student’s total absences. You may access your student’s grades and attendance through ParentVue on the
school website. Please contact the library if you need assistance with ParentVue.
Student Drop off/pick up information: Parents, please remind your students to use the crosswalks at all times
when crossing any street. This is for their safety and the safety of others. Please obey all the traffic signs
around campus and remember, there is no drop off or pick up on Knox Road in the West direction (NO
PARKING on the north side of the street). The area is clearly marked No Parking. U-turns on Knox Road are
also not permitted. We greatly appreciate your help as we try to keep everyone safe. Drop off/pick up
students is allowed in the Rural Lot, the LDS Lot and on the South curb of Knox Rd.

CDS Early Learning Center: The Early Learning Center is still enrolling children, ages 2-5, for the 2016-2017
school year. Children must be fully potty-trained. Tuition is $140.00/week with a $75.00 registration fee and
hours of operation are 6:30 am-4:30 pm. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact
Judy Garbosky at 752-8874 or [email protected].
Calculators: We would like to encourage you to get your math students a TI‐84 graphing calculator. While CDS
has a limited number of these calculators for use in both math and science classes, we will not be able to
accommodate every student who does not have a calculator. The purchase of a graphing calculator will not be
for a one‐time use, but will be used throughout high school in all the math (and in many science) classes, and
will most likely be used in college classes, as well. It is a wise investment. They are available at places such as
Walmart, Target, Amazon and any office supply store. The CDS Math department recommends purchasing a
Texas Instruments 84 (TI‐84) graphing calculator. While there are many options, the TI‐84 is the most
commonly-used calculator. If you have any questions or concerns, please email the Math Department chair,
Don Guess, at [email protected] or speak with your student’s math teacher.
SAT/ACT practice tests: On Nov 13th, there will be a Free SAT/ACT Combo Practice Test held by Kaplan Test
Prep to help students decide between the SAT and ACT. Participants will receive their scores immediately
following the exam. The practice test will be held at the Tempe Public Library from 12:30pm-4:30pm. It will
also be offered in a Live Online format throughout the weekend of Nov 12-13. Space is limited - sign up
at www.kaptest.com/practicetestweekend.
SENIOR INFORMATION
Senior parents: The Arizona legislature has required that all students pass a Civics Exam effective with the
class of 2017. According to the Arizona Department of Education website:
“This bill will require students, beginning with the graduating class of 2017, to pass a civics test based on the
United States Immigration and Naturalization civics questions. Students will be required to score 60% or
higher in order to graduate from high school or obtain a high school equivalency certificate. As a courtesy, the
Arizona Department of Education, with help from the Maricopa County Education Service Agency and Arizona
educators, has developed a mostly multiple choice version of the required test.”
Students at CDS began taking the exam last year, and seniors who are new to our school, or still need to pass
will be given multiple opportunities this year to retest. All students have been notified and will be testing
during their AcLab beginning on November 2. Students have also been provided with study guides to help
with preparation. If you have any questions, please contact Angela Carter in Guidance. Website:
https://www.azed.gov/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/civics-test-administration-manual_final.pdf
Graduation speakers: Two seniors, an Academic Representative and a Senior Class Representative, will have
the opportunity and honor of delivering the commencement speeches at the 2017 graduation ceremony. In
order to be considered for one of the speaking positions, interested seniors must download and complete the
application. Applications can be found in the Student Portal on the Corona del Sol Website and are due by
Wednesday, November 30, 2016.
Senior ads: The deadline for Proud Parent Ads in the yearbook has been extended. Create your ad online
at yearbookordercenter.com until Nov. 15 for $45. Still can't find the perfect picture? Final deadline is
Nov. 30 for $50. You will have several design choices and online help is available.
TUHSD Scholarship updates: To receive messages via text about scholarships, text @tuhsdmoney to 81010.
You can opt-out of messages at any time by replying [email protected]. If you have trouble using

and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of Social Studies. RHO KAPPA provides national recognition
and opportunities for exploration in the social studies. NCSS hopes to encourage an interest in, understanding
of and appreciation for the social studies. For more information you may contact chapter sponsor, Ms. Lisa

Robotics: Do you have an interest in robotics? Are you tired of tripping over old tools cluttering up your
garage? Corona del Sol's competitive robotics team is looking for your expertise and equipment donations as
we design, build, program and compete in this year's FIRST Robotics Competition. We are looking for parent
volunteers and equipment donations (chop saws, welding equipment, drills, scrap aluminum, etc.) to help us
attain our goal of competing in FRC Nationals in Houston, Texas. For information on how you can assist, please
contact Stephen Heiser at [email protected] or (480) 752-8888 ext. 80545.

must pay your $50.00 sports fee in the bookstore before try-outs. All forms are located online on
the CDS website or on Register my Athlete. https://home.registermyathlete.com/login/ - we do not have hard

Why should you consider rugby as a new sport to play?
Rugby values teamwork, builds fitness and endurance, develops the handeye coordination, motor skills, decision making skills and dexterity to be able
to run and pass and THINK all at the same time.
Everyone is on the field all the time an is on offense and defense to tackle,
run, catch and pass the ball and score!

My son or daughter will be participating in the Kiwanis Grad Night activity and I agree to assume the risk of
personal injury during his or her participation. I understand that all reasonable efforts will be extended to
insure the health and safety of all who are attending the party. I waive, release and hold harmless the Corona
del Sol PTO and any of it’s agents, officers and parent volunteers from any and all rights and claims for
