CORONA DEL SOL HOME OF THE AZTECS November 10, 2016 AZTEC HIGHLIGHTS GIRLS VOLLEYBALL 6A STATE CHAMPIONS! It was a fabulous finish for the 3rd-seeded Corona del Sol girls’ volleyball team, which swept No. 5-seed Mountain Pointe, 25-13, 25-21, 25-15, to capture the AIA 6A state championship at Mesquite High School last night. The Aztecs advanced to the last round after a hard-fought, semi-final victory Tuesday night over perennial powerhouse Xavier. In the championship match, senior outside hitter Erica Ronda had a doubledouble, with 15 kills and 16 digs. Senior middle hitter Lauren Forte contributed 11 kills, while junior outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller added 8 kills and junior Emma West had 10 kills. Solid setting from Abby Meyer and Madi Reum, strong passing from senior libero Cam Tucker and great net play by senior Jess Murphy and freshman Mady Noble all contributed to the Aztec victory. Also a big part of the Aztecs’ highly-successful season: seniors Logan Wallerstedt, Keelan Nelson, Brooke O’Meara, juniors Allie Wade, Isis Mitchell and Lexi Vlcek. Congratulations to Coach Ben Maxfield and the entire girls’ volleyball program. Students should remain out of school only when necessary. Students are allowed 10 absences (excused or unexcused) per semester. The eleventh total absence may result in loss of credit, unless there are extenuating circumstances. School-related absences do not count toward your student’s total absences. Children must be fully potty-trained. Tuition is $140.00/week with a $75.00 registration fee and hours of operation are 6:30 am-4:30 pm. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Judy Garbosky at 752-8874 or [email protected]. Calculators: We would like to encourage you to get your math students a TI‐84 graphing calculator. While CDS has a limited number of these calculators for use in both math and science classes, we will not be able to accommodate every student who does not have a calculator. The purchase of a graphing calculator will not be for a one‐time use, but will be used throughout high school in all the math (and in many science) classes, and will most likely be used in college classes, as well. It is a wise investment. They are available at places such as Walmart, Target, Amazon and any office supply store. The CDS Math department recommends purchasing a Texas Instruments 84 (TI‐84) graphing calculator. While there are many options, the TI‐84 is the most commonly-used calculator. If you have any questions or concerns, please email the Math Department chair, Don Guess, at [email protected] or speak with your student’s math teacher. SAT/ACT practice tests: On Nov 13th, there will be a Free SAT/ACT Combo Practice Test held by Kaplan Test Prep to help students decide between the SAT and ACT. Participants will receive their scores immediately following the exam. The practice test will be held at the Tempe Public Library from 12:30pm-4:30pm. It will also be offered in a Live Online format throughout the weekend of Nov 12-13. Space is limited - sign up at www.kaptest.com/practicetestweekend. SENIOR INFORMATION Senior parents: The Arizona legislature has required that all students pass a Civics Exam effective with the class of 2017. According to the Arizona Department of Education website: “This bill will require students, beginning with the graduating class of 2017, to pass a civics test based on the United States Immigration and Naturalization civics questions. Students will be required to score 60% or higher in order to graduate from high school or obtain a high school equivalency certificate. As a courtesy, the Arizona Department of Education, with help from the Maricopa County Education Service Agency and Arizona educators, has developed a mostly multiple choice version of the required test.” Students at CDS began taking the exam last year, and seniors who are new to our school, or still need to pass will be given multiple opportunities this year to retest. All students have been notified and will be testing during their AcLab beginning on November 2. Students have also been provided with study guides to help with preparation. If you have any questions, please contact Angela Carter in Guidance. Website: https://www.azed.gov/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/civics-test-administration-manual_final.pdf Graduation speakers: Two seniors, an Academic Representative and a Senior Class Representative, will have the opportunity and honor of delivering the commencement speeches at the 2017 graduation ceremony. In order to be considered for one of the speaking positions, interested seniors must download and complete the application.
