Overview
Gneiss Rock: Joe Hauger received his
bachelor’s degree from Southwest Minnesota
State University with a major in Environmental
The Minnesota Valley History Learning Center
(MVHLC) provides opportunities for K-12
educators, students and all generations to learn of
the rich natural and cultural heritage of the
Minnesota River Valley. They believe education
on the river’s beginnings and its future is vital to
the preservation of the valley.
The MVHLC delivers educator workshops
immersed in Minnesota history through the
following curriculum themes:

experience. It’s all about the history right
in our surrounding area and there are many
hands-on experiences.”

 Lesson plans & activities organized in our
MVHLC Training Binders
The curriculum for these themes is designed and
developed to exceed Minnesota Department of
Education academic standards in Science and
Social Studies. The sessions emphasize hands-on
learning of the curriculum materials taught
directly by the curriculum writers.
 Lunch
 Hands-on materials supportive to classroom
implementation
 Connections with other local educators
Continuing Education Hours:
12 CEU’s earned with attendance of the two-day
workshop, or 6 CEU’s for attendance of one day

Science & a minor in Geology. Joe is a Senior
Engineering Specialist with the Department of
Public Safety for Southwest Minnesota.
Glacial River Warren: Karen Poortvliet is a
recently retired science teacher from Comfrey,
Minnesota. Karen received her teaching degree
in Biology & has a minor in Chemistry from St.
Cloud State University. She gained licensure in
all sciences through classes from Minnesota
State University, Mankato and from the
University of Minnesota.
July 20 Instructors – Social Studies Focus
Prairie to Production: Rolf Mahlberg received
his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the
University of Minnesota in Agricultural
Education. Rolf has taught at Minnesota West
Community and Technical College in
Worthington for 30+ years and is currently
teaching as an adjunct faculty member for
Minnesota West.
Immigration & Settlement & Pioneer Life:
Matt Moore teaches Advanced Placement US
History & American Studies at Mankato West
High School. Matt received his teaching degree
from North Dakota State University & his
master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction
through the University of Minnesota.
