Falcon Freshman Notes: Notes from Ms. O’Hare- Hard to believe the first term is almost over!!! Finals will be on Tuesday, October 14th and Wednesday, October 15th- students will be allowed to leave at 12:20 those days, but they may stay for lunch at 12:25 if they would like. 2nd Term starts on Thursday- make sure your students check out their schedules on Portal as they may have changed. We are full swing into the Hunger Drive- we encourage all our students and to pitch in, donate, and participate in all the fun activities to help raise money for the Hunger Drive to stock local food pantries…Check out the website/announcements for more information. Remember there is NO school on Thursday, October 23rd and 24th….have a nice long weekend. GREEN HOUSE: Mrs. Choate: English 1: We did a brief lesson using nonfiction articles and characteristics. Students will revisit this later in the year. We are now writing a personal narrative over an obstacle that they have had and overcome. Our running theme this unit is facing obstacles. Next we will begin working on Greek mythology and reading The Odyssey Mrs. Choate: Honors 1: Students have finished reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. They will work today and this weekend on their Hyde projects and present them Monday. They will take the unit 1 test on Wednesday. Please make sure they are using the review sheet I gave them. Our next unit is Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Mr. Duquette: Algebraic Principles: We are beginning our exploration of rational and irrational numbers. This will lead to a brief unit on square roots. We will look at both perfect squares and other non-perfect square real numbers. Mr. Duquette: Algebra I: We are working on solving literal equations. We will be having a quiz on Tuesday next week. Our unit one test next week on Friday. Mrs. Wallace: US History: [email protected] Students took the quiz on industrialization (quiz 13/14) Wednesday. Most students did quite well. We are now studying Immigration at the turn of the century. We have a couple activities, using the internet, that students enjoy doing. Please remind your child, if they have been absent, that they must see their teachers before or after school to get/make-up work. Mr. McCloud: Earth Science: This week we learned about plate tectonics. The students finished the week doing a fun edible lab over plate boundaries. Next week we will finish up plate tectonics and take a quiz over the content covered. The end of the term is coming up which is comparable to a mid-term in my class. Check your student’s grade to see how they are doing in class. If they need help I am always available before and after school! PURPLE HOUSE: Mrs. Hansen: English I – 10/13 will mark the end of our short story unit with our final unit test that will be done in two parts. For part 1, students will be reading a short story and will need to be able to answer comprehension questions about the text, as well as identify literary terms and plot elements. Students will be completing the second part of the test with a written response where they will need to explain the identification of literary elements within the story. Students can study on their own on Quizlet at http://quizlet.com/Alissahansen. We will start unit 2 on Tuesday which covers nonfiction and contains a personal narrative piece. Students will continue to work on grammar skills via No Red Ink, and there will be a quiz on Friday, 10/17. We also started our class novel and students need to complete chapter 1 of The Pigman by Wednesday, 10/15 as well as the character notes and chapter title notebook entries over chapter 1. Mrs. Hansen: Honor’s English 1: We will continue with our reading of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" next week. Students need to come to class prepared with having done the reading, having made annotations, as well as having written a summary over each assigned chapter. The work load is starting to intensify in class and students should prepare for this. We will begin list #4 of our root words. Please let me know if you have questions, comments, concerns. Students are welcome to retake any quiz and rewrite any written assignment to help improve grades, and my door is always open for help. Mr. DeGeeter: Algebraic Principles: Next week is a somewhat interesting week with Tuesday and Wednesday being "finals schedule". We will start to work with multi-step equations as many are now getting the hang of how to solve equations. This unit has been a challenging one for some but the with a little bit of perseverance, all are doing well! Geometry: Next week is a somewhat interesting week with Tuesday and Wednesday being "finals schedule". We will close out Chapter 2 next week and do a few activities before starting our second project of the year the following week! Mr. Flaherty: US History: We begin our look at uncovering problems at the turn of the twentieth century. Students will explore the problems of immigration, urban overcrowding, pollution, political corruption and social tensions as the country expands. We will also start to look at the three Progressive era presidents and their attempts to solve many of these problems. Students should have completed their five paragraph essay on Andrew Carnegie and have received a grade by this point. This is a major part of their first quarter grade. Please check with your student or use the portal to see how they did on this assignment. As always I welcome any questions. Go Falcons! Mrs. Chester: Earth Science students are now studying continental drift and plate tectonics. I encourage all students to get their missing work in soon. Please check the Infinite Campus portal for CURRENT grades. ORANGE HOUSE: Mrs. Blocker: English 1 Next week, students will begin Unit 2: Facing Obstacles. They will begin by reading non-fiction articles and writing a well-developed paragraph. Mrs. Blocker: Honor’s English 1 Students will be spending next week working on Jekyll and Hyde. They will have reading and writing assignments throughout the week, so look for them to be doing homework. They need to have chapters 1 and 2 finished for Monday (with some discussion questions). Students should be completing 1-2 root words a day. Mrs. Tharp: Algebra: Students ended this week with their Unit 1 test. The test covered solving equations and inequalities. All missing work was due Friday, Oct 10th. Grades will be updated ASAP. Our next unit begins on Monday. We will start by graphing linear equations and linear inequalities. We will spend all of next week graphing and the beginning of the following week. Students should expect out of class assignments to help reinforce the skills taught during class. Mr. Mosier: US History : Students took their first test Friday. It covered westward expansion and the rise of industry. Next week students will get their first look at foreign affairs in our study of American history. Students will be talking about the foreign policy spectrum and the Spanish-American War. .Mr. Mosier: AP US History This past week students worked with the American Revolution, exploring an interactive map and composing a brief overview of the war. Students finished the week with work on the Articles of Confederation. Next week students will be working with the Constitutional Convention and discussing the Constitution. They will also take their second test, covering our 3rd period in US History, 1754-1800. Mr. Hensel: ESS and IGESS part 2 Next week will be all about earthquakes and the force that they cause on the Earth. Figuring out how we determine the exact location the the quake and the magnitude and scale are a few things that they will learn how to find in a lab on Tuesday and Wednesday (during their finals times). This unit will have all of their work on their Google classroom. For volcanoes, they will be researching some major volcanic eruptions, both historical and recent, and be explaining the destruction associated with them.
