Day 3
OBJ: To understand the basic terms of Geometry
To understand the basic postulates of Geometry
Let's talk about the 3 BASIC terms of Geometry.
Point: indicated by a dot; labeled with a CAPITAL letter
ex: A read "point A"
Line: series of points extending in opposite directions
and is "straight". Can be labeled with 2 points or a
small cursive letter
ex:
B
BC
C
Read line
Read line BC

Plane: a flat surface like the floor or a wall or the
ceiling. Labeled with three points on the plane
or a CAPITAL letter usually in the corner
P

C
Read plane P
Read plane ABC
Collinear Points: Points contained in the same line.
Coplanar Points: Points contained in the same plane.
Things to know: Lines can only be named with 2 CAPITAL
letters or one small cursive letter
Planes can have 3 or 4 CAPITAL letters or
one capital letter in the corner.

Review: Inductive Reasoning using patterns or several examples to
make a prediction
Conjecture a conclusion reached by using inductive
reasoning
Counterexample: an example which makes the
conjecture false.
Ex:
1
1+3
=1
Conjecture: The sum of first 30 odd
=4
integers is 302.
1+3+5 = 9
1+3+5+7 = 16
Make a conjecture about the sum of the first 35 odd
integers.
