Mission Statement News We are a community of believers in God as revealed in Jesus Christ as Lord. We believe in the authority of the Bible, the equality of all members, unity in diversity, and the priesthood of all believers. In communion with and through the power of the Holy Spirit, we follow the Way of Jesus the Christ and share the Good News through worship, education, ministries, and missions. As an autonomous Baptist Church, we value our heritage and the freedom it allows us to minister alongside other groups, both Christian and non-Christian. We express our love for all in gratitude for the love God has shown to us. A gentleman from the city was driving out in the country and he managed to get lost. He reluctantly stopped at a farmhouse and asked an old farmer, “Can you tell me how far it is to Mill Pond?” The old man replied, “Mister, if you keep going in the same direction you’re heading, Mill Pond is about 25,000 miles from here. But if you’ll turn around and drive the other direction, it’s about 4 miles down the road.” Life is full of overwhelming forces, powerful voices and dangerous cross currents that can easily and quickly carry us way off course. These are appropriate questions for Lent: Are we heading in the right direction? Are we moving closer to God’s way and will for our lives, or are we getting farther away? What temptations are leading us to do and be something other than what God is calling us to do and be? In the season of Lent, nothing is held back, nothing is hidden. We confess that we are broken, flawed, imperfect sinners in need of grace. We lay bare all that we are; trusting in God’s all-encompassing goodness and grace. – Baxter Wynn 864-233-2527 Bill Harris to Preach Sunday Our guest proclaimer Sunday, March 16, is Dr. Bill Harris, pastor of Harris and Mathews United Methodist Churches in Greenwood. Three of the continuing education programs this spring will be open to the congregation and community friends: March 16, April 6 and May 18. Next Sunday, March 16, 5:006:00 p.m. in Carpenter Chapel, Ed Iler will discuss the impact on senior adults of having to make decisions regarding major change in their lives. After the presentation, Duke McCall will facilitate a time for questions and discussion. All are welcome, but senior adults and their families are especially encouraged to attend. You will have an opportunity to learn as well as to share your personal insight on the topic. Please enter through the doors under the steeple. Ed Iler is a former member of First Baptist and an avid hiker and backpacker who has hiked most of the mountain trails in the upstate and in the Smoky Mountain National Park. His transition from hiker and outdoors to a resident in a retirement community was smooth due to his planning and the support of his lovely wife, now deceased.
