Content Explorer – new dynamic table of contents that enables you to easily browse a publication’s contents pages to identify the information you want to read. It collapses when not in use to provide a comfortable online reading experience 3. Search is visible from the homepage and is accessible from the top of the screen on every page 4. Home Page Features and Functions Content Explorer Big Tax Index Search Content Explorer and Browsing Our new dynamic navigation tool, Content Explorer, allows you to browse the content in a similar way to a book’s content pages to find the information you want to read in more detail. By clicking on the arrows you drill down to the different layers or sections of the publications. You can access any layer from within the Content Explorer by clicking on the first entry in each column. Click on the page icon to reach major chapter headings or content collections, and continue to browse from within these publications by following section heading links or paragraph numbers. When you close Content Explorer and go back to it later within the session, it remembers your most recent location. You can bookmark “favourite” products or content next to each entry and layers by clicking on the access your favourites by clicking on the first entry. When you have navigated to the publication or section you want to read, Content Explorer collapses until you want to use it again to browse to a new publication or section of content. The Big Tax Index is a convenient way to see more information about different taxes and how they are applied across a range of topics in our most popular titles. 1 Click on the letter that your topic of interest begins with and scan the list of sub-topics. 2 Alternatively use the topic search to quickly filter the number of sub-topics, narrowing down your selection as you type. How Search appears away from the Home screen Clicking on the floppy disc icon will allow you to view your Saved Searches. Home screen view of Search As you start typing your search term, the screen switches to a dynamic view of the possible search results, narrowing down the search results as your search term becomes more specific. In the example below the search term “inheritance” generates more than 23,000 results but by being more specific and typing in “inheritance tax liability” the number of search results reduces dramatically. Home Page Features and Functions Content Explorer Big Tax Index Search Statute Finder page 6 Standards Finder Case Finder HMRC Manuals Archive Tools History CPD Tracker Preferences Browsers Narrowing your Search You can scan your search results using the breadcrumb to help you decide the most appropriate result or you can further refine your search results using the filters on the right hand side. Search results are filtered for you by Content Type or by Product. Clicking on the cross restores the original results set or clicking on any of the links takes to you directly to the search results already displayed. You can select a product and drill down within that product. Products ordered by number of search hits related to search term. In this example, search results have been filtered by Product, and again a narrower set of results has been displayed. Advance Search tip You can search for exact phrases (in double quotes), eg small business “Accounting legislation” as well as NOT words (expressed with a hyphen). For example, small business “Accounting legislation” -Enterprise. Note: when using exact phrase search in quotation marks, make sure your search phrase is spelt correctly and/or is an EXACT match, eg “Accounting legislation” as the Search will not return results for “Accounts legislation” when using quotation marks. You can flip between regular and Archive Search with this button. “Return to search results” button will take you to the results of your most recent search if you select a result or navigate away from the search results page. If you do any search and then click on one of the results you will see the ‘Return to search results’ button on the right-hand side. If you click “Add to saved searches” the button will go green and by clicking on it again you can remove it. Alternatively, click on the floppy disc icon on the search bar. Your Saved Searches can be accessed from the centre panel on the Home screen or from “My CCH” in the top right corner. Enter the information you know about a particular piece of legislation and click “Find”. 3 This will bring up a list of references where that particular legislative provision is mentioned. You can move between related information in Commentary, Cases and HMRC Manuals by clicking on the black buttons. Click on “Related” buttons for interpretation to this provision. This features allows you to locate a case quickly. it is particularly helpful if you know only one name of a party in the case or if you are unsure of the full case title or case reference. in the example below, the case report features “Schweppes” but is in fact listed as Cadbury Schweppes. The results confirm the full, correct title and display any other related cases containing the name “Schweppes”. 3 You can then click on the relevant result to take you to a report on that case. Or, as you undertake a search – in this case “fixtures and fittings” the results page is displayed. Click on “Searching the HMRC Archive” to restrict your search to just this document collection. You can then pinpoint your search to a particular year and month by using the filters on the right. 1 2 HMRC Tax Manuals Archive is only viewable/searchable if part of your current subscription. You can choose the document format and attach your own message. •Printing •Emailing • Saving to a Folder •Downloading Preferences 1 4 Print 2 To print a piece of content, click on “Printable version”. The document you want to print will open in a separate window and simply follow the print commands on screen. Existing folders can be accessed at any time by clicking on “My CCH” in the top right of the screen or accessing the quick link buttons on the home screen. You can access your History from the “My CCH” on the top right of your screen, from the quick link button on the home screen. When clicking on “All Recent History” or “My History” to access a page you can pinpoint your activity by date. From here you can choose to add documents to your folders. This time can be converted into points or hours of study and counts towards your professional body’s requirements for CPD. You can access your CPD Tracker from the “My CCH” on the top right of your screen to check on your progress. A wide range of research information contained within your CCH Online subscription is supported by our new CPD Tracker functionality. To track your research, simply click on the “Add to CPD Tracker” link at the bottom of the relevant page you have read. The tool calculates the average reading speed for technical content and converts this into minutes of learning. You can download to Excel from My CPD Tracker so that you can submit this as evidence of your learning to your manager or professional body.
