Chairman’s Message

dear cso friends and family:
As I look back on the past year, I can hardly believe how
fast it flew by. From the first notes of Beethoven’s epic Ninth
Symphony that opened the season, to the final bars of the last
performance of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony in June, this
season was a whirlwind in every sense of the word.
with CSO musicians. As of June 30, 2015, the on-demand
streaming of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony had been viewed by
hundreds of thousands of people in more than 200 countries
and territories after being released in May 2015. These figures
continue to grow at an impressive rate.
Under the leadership of Zell Music Director Riccardo Muti, the
CSO enjoyed spectacular receptions everywhere it performed
this season—from Millennium Park and Symphony Center
to New York’s Carnegie Hall and from its debut in Warsaw
to four extraordinary capacity concerts in Vienna’s famed
Musikverein. No matter where they went, Maestro Muti and
the CSO represented our great city with class and flair.
As I turn the reins over to Helen Zell, our new Board Chair,
I can assure her that she will always have the steadfast
support—as I have experienced myself—of the CSOA’s
Trustees, Governing Members, Women’s Board, the League,
and the Overture Council, who help spread the word about
the outstanding work that goes on here every day, both on
and off the stage. A veritable army of donors, foundations,
corporations, sponsors, and patrons who are dedicated to our
mission help spread this message as well.
I am so grateful to Bank of America for serving as the Global
Sponsor of the CSO and making these moments, both here in
Chicago and around the world, possible.
Education and community engagement programs of
the Negaunee Music Institute reach more than 200,000
people each year in Chicago and support its mission of
transforming lives through music in a variety of ways. The
Civic Orchestra celebrated its 95th anniversary, while the
Percussion Scholarship Group reached its own milestone of
20 years. Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant YoYo Ma continued his charge as mentor and inspiration for
the musicians of the Civic Orchestra, as well as collaborator
I also would like to extend my thanks to Jeff Alexander,
whose leadership in the short time he has been at our helm
has already made an impact and in whose future success I am
confident. Jeff and his staff do much of their work behind the
scenes, but they play an important role in assuring this great
Orchestra’s success.
It has been a privilege to serve as Chairman of the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra Association. Thank you for the honor
of this opportunity.

President’s Message
5
dear friends,
It is an honor to have joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Association as its President in January 2015. Before beginning
my tenure, though, I was privileged to participate in the opening
of the 2014/15 season, attending the CSO’s performances of
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony; joining 20,000 other fans in
Millennium Park for a perfect evening of Tchaikovsky under
the stars; and even participating in part of the Orchestra’s
European tour in the fall of 2014 which, after performances in
Warsaw, Geneva, Luxembourg, and Paris, culminated in four
extraordinary concerts at the world-renowned Musikverein in
Vienna. It was a wonderful introduction to my new role here
to see audiences at home and around the world appreciate this
distinguished ensemble’s legendary artistry.
Maestro Muti’s programs this season focused on symphonic
works by Scriabin and Tchaikovsky, which were paired to
spotlight the work of these two Russian composers. Few
conductors understand the music of Scriabin as Muti does,
and his performances of these and Tchaikovsky’s familiar
works were unmatched. Muti and the CSO gave three glorious
performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall in January with
this repertoire and audiences there responded with lengthy
ovations. In addition, Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet, led by Muti,
was released on the CSO Resound label to outstanding reviews.
Guest conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen curated and led the
CSO’s three-week French Reveries and Passions Festival in
May, giving us the opportunity to hear the Orchestra perform
French symphonic and operatic works, featuring works by
Ravel, Debussy, and Messiaen. Pianists Cédric Tiberghien and
Alexandre Tharaud made their recital debuts as part of the
festival on the SCP Piano series, and an evening of French jazz
rounded out the festival’s offerings.
Mead Composers-in-Residence Mason Bates and Anna
Clyne, in the final season of their five-year tenures, created
four intriguing MusicNOW performances, and each had their
second CSO-commissioned work for full orchestra premiered
by the CSO.
The Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra continued its important work of engaging
individuals and communities in greater Chicago by sharing
the tremendous musical resources of the CSO. Judson and
Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma continued his
mentorship of musicians in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago,
which celebrated its 95th year this season, while the Percussion
Scholarship Program honored its 20th anniversary with alumni
and current students. Programming for all ages, from Once
Upon a Symphony, to Family Concerts, to in-school programs
and invited-audience rehearsals reached more than 200,000
this year.
We could not possibly accomplish all that we do without our
thousands of loyal volunteers, patrons, donors, and staff, who
are so committed to the Orchestra’s mission. Thank you for
your dedication. Special thanks go to our Global Sponsor, Bank
of America, which supports our efforts around the world.
I’d like to extend a special “thank you” to Jay Henderson, who
has served this great organization as Board Chair since 2012.
I am grateful for his wisdom and counsel, for his considered
and deliberate approach to any question or challenge, and
most of all, for the time that he has devoted to this institution.
During his tenure, he secured a second five-year contract
to keep Riccardo Muti as the CSO’s music director through
the 2019/20 season, a five-year agreement to keep the CSO
at Ravinia in the summers through 2018, and a new threeyear agreement with our musicians. He served as Chair for the
search for and selection of a new President, among numerous
other achievements, and has attended countless concerts both
at home and on tour. Thank you, Jay, for your leadership as
Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Season Highlights
actor wendell pierce and Chicago-based percussionist
and composer Dana Hall perform in Hypocrisy of Justice:
Sights and Sounds From the Black Metropolis (Riffin’ and
Signifyin(g) on Richard Wright’s Native Son), celebrating
the 75th Anniversary of the novel’s publication. The piece,
a Symphony Center Presents Jazz series commission,
received its world premiere on June 19, 2015, and featured
the Dana Hall Quintet, narration by Pierce, and imagery
by Chicago-based visual artist Kerry James Marshall. Visit
csosoundsandstories.org/scenes-from-dana-halls-riffin-andsignifying-on-richard-wrights-native-son/ for more images
of the performance. The 2014/15 SCP Jazz series featured
national and international jazz stars, including two jazz
piano greats, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and a weeklong residency by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln
Center Orchestra, which included two concerts and a Jazz for
Young People® performance. The 2014/15 Symphony Center
Presents season featured special guests representing diverse
musical genres, including the all-female gospel group Sweet
Honey in the Rock and CSO Judson and Joyce Green Creative
Consultant Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble celebrating
the ensemble’s 15th anniversary.
cso mead composers-in-residence Mason Bates and
Anna Clyne address the audience at an event celebrating
the culmination of their five-year residency with the CSO.
Both Bates and Clyne, appointed by Maestro Muti in 2010,
had their initial contracts extended through the end of
the 2014/15 season. In 2015, Bates and Clyne both had
commissioned works receive their world premieres by the
CSO on subscription programs—Clyne’s violin concerto,
The Seamstress, featuring soloist Jennifer Koh, on May 28
and 30, and Bates’ Anthology of Fantastic Zoology on June
18, 19, and 20. The 2014/15 MusicNOW series, curated by
Bates and Clyne, featured repertoire by some of the world’s
leading living composers, including The Wind in High Places
by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams and
Jonny Greenwood’s Suite from the film There Will Be Blood.
A special program on March 23, 2015, Boulez’s Workshop,
honored composer and CSO conductor emeritus Pierre Boulez
on the occasion of his 90th birthday. Boulez’s chamber work
was performed alongside Bates’ Indigo Workshop for piano
and the world premiere of Clyne’s Postponeless Creature,
based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Read more at
csosoundsandstories.org/anna-clyne-and-mason-bates-lookback-as-they-move-forward/.
In January 2015, Maestro Muti and the CSO announced that
Samuel Adams and Elizabeth Ogonek had been selected as the
next CSO Mead Composers-in-Residence and will begin their
three-year terms at the start of the 2015/16 season.
Season Highlights
symphony center favorite Evgeny Kissin performs
for a sold-out crowd at Symphony Center. Kissin’s program,
presented on April 19, 2015, featured Beethoven’s Piano
Sonata No. 21 (Waldstein), Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 4 in C
Minor, and selected Preludes by Rachmaninov. A number
of other notable piano virtuosi made appearances as part
of the Symphony Center Presents Piano series in 2014/15,
including Sir András Schiff, Maurizio Pollini, Orli Shaham,
and Alexandre Tharaud, who made his debut as part of the
French Reveries and Passions Festival. Similarly, French
pianist Cédric Tiberghien opened the Reveries and Passions
Festival and made his SCP Piano series debut on May 3, 2015,
performing a mostly Gallic recital of Debussy, Szymanowski,
and Ravel. The SCP Chamber Music series featured
outstanding international soloists throughout the 2014/15
season, including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Hilary Hahn, and Gil
Shaham. The SCP Orchestra series included two outstanding
visiting orchestras: the London Philharmonic conducted by
Vladimir Jurowski and the Rotterdam Philharmonic led by
Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

Scholarships
Civic musicians receive an
annual stipend to help offset
some of their living expenses
during orchestra training.
As a special curricular
enhancement, eight Civic
members participate in the
Civic Fellowship program,
a rigorous artistic and
professional development
curriculum that supplements
their membership in the full
orchestra. Major funding for
the Civic Fellowship program
is generously provided by The
Julian Family Foundation
with additional funding from
Prince Charitable Trusts.
