Compare and Order Whole Numbers through Millions
You compare numbers when you want to know if one number is less
than, greater than, or equal to another number. Then you can put the
numbers in order from least to greatest. You can use a number line or
a place-value chart to help you compare and order numbers.
Compare and order 1,212,572, 1,216,572 and 1,215,572.
1,212,572
1,215,572 1,216,572
So, looking from left to right on the number line 1,212,572 is the least,
1,215,572 is second, and 1,216,572 is the greatest number.
In a place-value chart, you start at the left. Look for the first place where
the digits are different to compare the numbers. Continue through each
place value until you have ordered all the numbers.
