This will be followed by exploration of coal mining and mineral quarrying history in the Meltham area. Meet at 1000 in Morrison Café Meltham. Estimate about 4hrs. Trip Leader: Roger Lynch WEST YORKSHIRE GEOLOGY TRUST Frickley Country Park, South Elmsall, Saturday 13th February 2.00 – 4.00 Organised by Friends of Roundhay Park A short walk of less than a mile to see the landscaped Frickley Colliery site, now a country park. Find out about the rocks and fossils found in the mine shafts, as well as other rocks and landscapes in the South Elmsall area. See the new rocks and landscapes interpretation panel. Bring any interesting rocks or fossils that you have found to be identified by experts. Meet Tony Felski at the Doncaster Road car park WF9 2JU (Grid Reference SE 477 100) on the B6422 about half a mile south of South Elmsall railway station. Footpaths are graded for easy walking. Venue: Leeds Museums Discovery Centre (Large Education Room), Carlisle Road, Hunslet, Leeds LS10 1LB. (Parking is available on site). Proposed outline for the day: 10.30 – Meet for Tea/Coffee 10.45 - Talk by Neil Owen - Geology Curator on the Leeds Geology Collection and current work and plans. 11.00 - John to introduce the Clay Cycle 11.15 Ian to go into detail on Clay - hands on experiments etc. About 12.30 - Lunch – NB: Bring a packed lunch. 13.00 - David - Something completely different - Fossil Fish 14.00 - John to complete the Clay Cycle (Powerpoint) - mudstone, shale and metamorphism to, slate, phyllite, schist and gneiss ---back to clay. 14.30 - 15.30 - Examine Clay Cycle and Fish Fossil Samples from Discovery Centre. Members are asked to bring clay cycle samples eg clay, mudstone, shale, slate, phyllite, schist and gneiss which everyone can handle. In particular Ian would like different clay to play with!
