SUMMER PROGRAMS 2017 Celebrating 30 SummerS Of fun at NEW HEIGHTS NEW HEIGHTS - SINCE 1987 Since 1987, New Heights has provided experiential learning programs for youth in the greater Seacoast. Over the years, we have helped literally thousands of 5th through 12th grade youth develop friendships and discover talents and lifelong passions. We are proud to have shaped generations of community members and leaders. New Heights strives to provide the highest quality programs to as many 5th through 12th grade youth as possible. Current programming opportunities range from include Arts, STEM, and Adventure. Staff members maintain CPR, defensive driving, and Wilderness First Responder certification, while several employees hold Master’s degrees in their given discipline. Just call the office at (603) 422.8235. Scholarships New Heights is proud of the experiential learning programs we offer, and we work hard to make them accessible to participants and their families. Scholarships are awarded to anyone who qualifies; we follow federal HUD guidelines. Just fill out the form as part of your online registration at NewHeightsOnline.org. Payment Plans Payment Plans can be arranged through the New Heights office by calling 603-422-8235. Payment Plans incorporate firm deadlines and will not be finalized until registration has been completed. EARLY BIRD PROGRAM Our Early Bird Program is for parents who need an early morning option. Staff offer a variety of activities including art activities, board games, and open gym before the daily schedule starts. Early Bird runs from 7:30am until 9:00am. Cost is $35 a week or $10 a day. NEWHEIGHTSONLINE.ORG ADV E N T URE Trips are designed for a small number of participants and may include overnight travel with camping, canoeing, surfing, and/or hiking. We offer trips for both middle and high school students. No experience is necessary & all gear and instruction is provided. Scholarships and payment plans are available for all programs. Call us at (603) 422.8235 High School Expedition: Adirondacks Surfing (12+) The Adirondacks have the clearest lakes in the Northeast, and are perfect for our seven-day canoe expedition. We will be dropped off nearly 40 miles south of our outfitter’s shop, and will paddle fully-loaded canoes back through lakes and rivers to complete our journey. During this trip for high school students, including those entering 9th grade, participants will acquire wilderness living skills and learn to rely on themselves and their peers while developing a wilderness ethic... and of course, have a blast! Seasoned surfers and those new to surfing High School Surfin’ Safari The 14th annual three-day trip to ride the warm(ish) waves in Cape Cod fills up fast! The group will surf, camp, surf, fly kites, surf, eat ice cream, surf, play mini golf...you get the idea! No experience is necessary. This expedition is for high school students, including those entering the 9th grade and those having just graduated high school. New Heights provides the surfboards, wetsuits, food, and all camping gear. Canoeing in the Whites Come join us on this classic canoe trip down the Saco River and into beautiful Osippee Lake, with a stop for lunch on a sunny sand bar. Seasoned paddlers and those new to canoeing will all enjoy this paddle and summer swim time!! 3 Day Outdoor Rock Climbing Participants will spend three days exploring some of the local climbing gems. We will visit the Upper and Lower Cliffs in Pawtuckaway State Park in Raymond, NH and head down to Den Rock in Andover, MA. No experience is necessary and all gear and instruction are provided. Climbers of all levels will find themselves challenged while developing their skills. are welcome to join us for some local summer fun! We will work on the basics of paddling and catching waves and participants will be shredding in no time! All gear and instruction are provided. Adventure Week A brand new, three-day trip, designed to give participants a taste of our adventure program and all of the fun that we have. During the program, we will rock climb, sea kayak, slackline, surf, and enjoy the beautiful Seacoast summer!! No experience in any activity is necessary, and all gear and instruction are provided. Middle School Expedition: Green Mountains For the first time, our popular Middle School Expedition will be headed to the Green Mountains of Vermont. Participants will explore central VT and tackle an overnight hike into a Long Trail shelter. The group will swim, cook, hike, play, and do some serious bonding, all while having some serious fun!! Island Cruise to Singing Sands Hop on the ferry in Portland, Maine and cruise 3 miles offshore to Long Island. We’ll walk a short mile to the beach where the sand will sing under our feet, like snow on the coldest of days! We’ll spend the day on the beach, having fun with the best sounds of summer. Call us at (603) 422.8235 Mad Circus Skillz June 26 - 30 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 250 Learn to walk on both two and four foot tall stilts, spend some time practicing various forms of juggling, and this summer we will feature the Kendama, a traditional Japanese toy. Five Friendly Days of Cooking July 10 - 14 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 250 First a trip to The Friendly Toast to sample their best sellers, meet the owner, study the menu, and recreate our favorites in the New Heights kitchen. Kinetic Sculpture July 10 - 14 • Daily 9am - 5pm $ 250 Explore the excitement of moving art! Teams will create a human-powered rideable art sculpture made from found materials. Intro to Humanoid Robotics with NAO July 17 - 21 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 275 Explore and program NAO, one of the world’s most advanced humanoid robots. He can be programmed to tell stories, walk around, dance, or hold conversations, using his graphical programming language. Fiber Arts & DIY Dying July 17 - 21 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 250 Explore shibori indigo dyeing, batik, weaving, ecodyeing, applique, felting, stamping, screen, woodblock, stencil printing. Lunch will be eaten in natural enviros to fuel creativity. Against the Grain Cooking July 24 - 28 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 250 Budding chefs will explore local farm-to-table and whole food cooking to discover how healthy eating can be delicious! Includes visits to local farms and restaurants to learn about their daily farm-to-table practices. Costuming and Cosplay Creations July 31 - Aug 4 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 250 Dive into the world of creative costuming to design and construct a unique costume using a variety of techniques. Includes visits with experts from the cosplay community and a wicked cool field trip. Curtain Up: Theater in a Week August 7 - 11 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 275 In collaboration with the historic Seacoast Repertory Theater, learn from local professionals in script writing, sound, lighting design, costuming, and acting to create a short theatrical performance using your newly acquired skills. Saturday Morning Performance. CRIBS: Art Studio Style August 14 - 18 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 250 Travel the Seacoast and get a behind-the-scenes look at where artists create, and the techniques and tools they use to create their magic. This is a great way to inspire the aspiring artist! LEGO Robotics Boot Camp August 14 - 18 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 275 Have fun while exploring the exciting world of robots in this introduction to our fall FIRST LEGO League teams! Using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robotics kit, participants will build and program robotic creations that use sensors to interact with their environment. 5th Grade: New Heights’ Sampler August 21 - 25 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 250 Experience what New Heights is all about! Everyday is packed with robotics, 3D printing, rock climbing, high ropes challenge, boogie boarding, stilting, poster printing, or t-shirt printing. The week is action packed and will end with a BBQ at the beach! Middle School: New Heights’ Favorites August 21 - 25 • Daily 9am - 3pm $ 250 Experience middle school fun with this collection of New Heights’ favorites! Short Sands (Golden Rod/Fun-o-rama) in York, ice skating at the Rinks, Hilltop Fun Center, Pierce Island Pool, and Archery! Then we’ll top it off with some FunTown/Splash Town.
