HEALTHY HOME & LAWN www.organicdynamics.com My Goal for the Year IS.... By Claudia Zelazny – Legacy Performance and Integrated Wellness Center - http://www.legacyperformwell.com/index.html Every Sunday, the Dallas Morning News runs a short piece called "Good Kid". The blurb spotlights a high school junior or senior - sometimes a college freshman - who is just what the title would imply: a kid doing well in school, active in the community at large, and an all-around shining light. Some of the questions asked are about hobbies, favorite school subject, two people they want to meet, best book read, best advice received, what they would do with $100 and "my goal for this year is to...". On July 4, 2010 a recent graduate of The Greenhill School in Dallas wrote that her goal for the year is to..."continue to be happy." Wow! When I first read that, I thought it sounded sophomoric - every one wants to be happy, right -but, as I let the simplicity of her words sink in, I realized she had distilled the essence of life into five words..."to continue to be happy." "Children smile 400 times a day on average...adults 15 times. Children laugh 150 times a day...adults 6 times per day. Children play between 4-6 hours a day...adults only 20 minutes a day. What's happened?" Robert Holden (from 'Living Wonderfully') What has happened? As we grow up and grow older, does life beat us down so much that we lose the capacity for happiness? Or do we not truly understand what our purpose is in this life? continued on page 2 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: 1 My Goal for the Year is...... 1 January News from Ron's Organics, Inc. 2 My Goal for the Year is......continued 3 Container Gardening 3 Herb Gardens 3 January News from Ron's Organics, Inc. continued 4 January’s Monthly Special Healthy Home & Lawn January 2011 JANUARY NEWS FROM Ron's Organics, Inc. by Mona Hall As I sit here in the Sacremento Mountains in Ruidoso NM, I look back on 2010. I have asked myself a number of times how did the year go by so fast? As I started to answer myself I looked back month by month and came up with how fascinating each month was and realized it was because of the people I met. Ron and I started the Natural Living and Garden Show in February 2009. We signed a 13 week agreement, knowing that we would not do more than 13 weeks. Ha Ha, that was not in the cards. Here it is almost 2 years later and we are still going strong. But, the reason that we have been strong is not because of Ron and I, but because of all of you. Our customers, clients, employees and great friends. So, I decided to write about the few people that fascinated me in 2010. So here it goes.!! Not long after being on the show I received an email from a man named Scott. He was very nice in the email and had great words of encouragement about the show. He then came to the garden center a few months later. He told me a little about himself. Scott does not brag, but he really should. Scott is the co-owner of Legacy Performance and Integrated Wellness Center. Scott, has a lifelong background in sports, playing and training elite, Olympic Athletes. He is a Metabolic Typing Advisor, through Healthexcel, a company founded by Bill Wolcott. Through Paul Chek's Institute, Scott is an HLC Level 3, Chek Practitioner Level 4 and PPS Counselor. He has completed The Kalish Method, a course in body systems analysis, developed by Dr. Daniel Kalish. Currently, Scott is in the sixth year of an osteopathic doctoral program taught in Canada by Guy Voyer, D.O. That is all very impressive (see why he should brag), but, Scott takes each individual person in to account with his work. He is extremely passionate and caring with his clients. However, don't let the long hair fool you, he is tough when need be. Shortly after meeting Scott, I met Gary DeMasters. Although, I have actually known Gary for a long time, I really didn't know Gary. Gary is the founder of Maestro-Gro. Google that. He is also one who does not brag. But, it wasn't Maestro-Gro that intrigued me about Gary, it was The Maestro himself. I sat with Gary, Ron, and James Henry of Soil Therapy Compost at dinner one night and got to know Gary, I mean really got to know Gary. We talked for about 2 hours at this restaurant and I know they were ready to throw us out. Although, I really am not sure what Ron and James were talking about, I was mesmerized by Gary. He is probably one of the smartest people I know besides Ron, (of course that is why he married me, smart man). (continued pg 3, column 2) Don't forget to listen to Ron and Mona on KLIF 570AM Sunday Mornings 8-9am on the Natural Living and Garden Show January 2011 Page 1 My Goal for the year is.... - Continued from page 1 Objectivism is the philosophy created by the Russian-American philosopher and novelist Ayn Rand (1905-1982). Rand originally expressed her philosophical ideas in her novels 'The Fountainhead' and 'Atlas Shrugged'. The name "Objectivism" derives from the principle that human knowledge and values are objective: they are not created by the thoughts one has, but are determined by the nature of reality, to be discovered by man's mind. Ayn Rand characterized Objectivism as "a philosophy for living on earth", grounded in reality, and aimed at defining man's nature and the nature of the world in which he lives. She wrote, "My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life." What if the 'hero's journey' of each life is to be happy? If it really is that simple, a lot of us are wasting time and energy on stuff that does not matter one bit. "We either make ourselves happy or miserable. The amount of work is the same." Carlos Castaneda (1925-1998) American writer and Nagual (Shaman) "People are usually as happy as they make up their minds to be." Abraham Lincolm "If you cannot find happiness along the road, you will not find it at the end of the road." Writer Unknown 'Siddhartha" is an allegorical novel by Hermann Hesse that deals with the spiritual journey of a wealthy Indian boy during the time of the Buddha. What strikes me about his journey is that by being so focused on what he was determined to find at the end, Siddhartha missed all the serendipitous beauty en route. I sometimes feel that is what contemporary man does in his life...we are so focused on attaining whatever we have placed on high that our tunnel-vision limits our joy in the everyday. The best things in life aren't things, but it would seem that we are driven to attain more and more with less happiness being the result of a frantic need to fill the void. I write and ponder about 'happiness' quite often...I see so little of it on the faces and in the lives of people all around me. I want more of it in my own life...if happiness truly is a choice we make, why would I choose to be unhappy? Maybe I don't think I deserve to be happy. "You cannot be thankful and unhappy at the same time." Writer Unknown The mind, a wonderful thing, cannot hold two different thoughts at the same time...so we must train our mind to go to a powerfully happy thought when it wants to take us in a different direction. We are the master of our thoughts; we should not let our thoughts become the master of us. But, oh how difficult that is for so many. Creating any habit, positive or negative, requires repetition. In order for a motor engram (a series of processes or commands associated with any given cognitive goal or task) to be created, there must be repetitive stimuli. It takes 300 to 350 reps to build one in the body. It may take three times that many reps to change. Contrasted with a motor engram, the Psychoneurological engram (as described by L. Ron Hubbard) is a mental image or picture of an experience, usually unhappy, stored in the subconscious mind. In order to create positive, loving, happy Continued from previous column engrams we have to deal with and change the negative, unloving, sad ones we carry inside us. "By remaining stuck in the power of our wounds, we block our own transformation." Caroline Myss "Who would we be without our story?" Byron Katie Everyone has a story and everyone has been hurt. Get over it. How do we do that? I have gratitude as an attitude...maybe not 100% of the time, but pretty darn close. No matter how awful I may think a thing is in my life, I can name 5 to 10 things that are blessings. By the way, blessings is not a word that falls easily from my lips. I struggle with that concept: perhaps 'gifts' would be a better choice. Whatever word you choose, there are things in your life that bring you joy, make you laugh, create beauty, are filled with love, mean kindness to you. These things are often not the big, splashy things, but the small wonders... ...puppy breath, a sticky kiss from a child, the coolness of an evening breeze, a call from a friend when you are feeling blue, the warm rays of the sun as you lie on a chaise, the beauty of a freshly planted flower garden, getting into a bed with fresh linens, rack of lamb roasted just right, the crunch of cool jicama, a gluten-free macaroon, your child telling you she loves you. saying something that gives a person hope. I don't expect life to be perfect. I expect to be given ample opportunity to learn lessons I am supposed to learn while I'm here. How fast or slow I learn is up to me. The Universe will never give up on me...it continues to present me with the chance to grow and continue along my path. I try not to beat myself up when I realize that I haven't quite gotten a lesson down pat. That is what 'practice' is all about. I do the best I can. Some days, my best is better than other days! I have never given up on myself. The human spirit is a miraculous thing. So is resilience and I have that, too. I have taken some circuitous routes, but I have never given up on myself. I have decided that my legacy is to just be happy. If I was supposed to be a Mother Teresa, I would probably be that by now! Legacy and purpose don't have to be such big concepts that you think they are too big to have in your own life. Purpose is what gives meaning to you in your life. Legacy is a gift you leave for others. The best thing I could do at this point in my life is to show my daughter that creating happiness for myself, from out of myself and not as a result of something someone else does or doesn't do, is huge and can have a ripple effect on everyone I come in contact with each day. What have I got to lose? "To get up each morning with the resolve to be happy...is to set our own conditions to the events of each day. To do this is to condition circumstances instead of being conditioned by them." Ralph Waldo Emerson So thank you, Mary Horn, a "good kid" with the right idea! Continued next column Healthy Home & Lawn January 2011 Page 2 Herb Gardens All good cooks use herbs in their recipes. Did you know that fresh herbs can make for more exciting recipes. They also make a great little garden idea. An herb garden is beautiful and functional. You can save money when you don't have to go buy the little bottles of dried up and out herbs and spices. Herbs also make for a delicious, relaxing homemade tea. So try your hand at growing and using your own herbs. When planning an herb garden, the main thing to keep in mind is “plant what you and yours will use”. A lot of people who have tried herb gardens and gave up was because they just overplanted and then when not used the herbs get overgrown and then the gardener gets discouraged and “quits”. Do you add sage to your cornbread dressing? Then grow you a Sage plant. One sage plant will yeild you more than enough sage to last the season. Do you like mint tea's? Grow you a peppermint, spearmint, chocolate mint, or Mojito mint plant. One plant will be enough for you and all your family to enjoy. OUR HERB PLANTS are generally here around the first of March. (January News continued....) He has developed and perfected the art of healing with herbal teas. He knows so many leaders in the industry of organics, and has developed The Maestro healing teas. I thought to myself “sure you can feel better with drinking 2oz of a tea a day” is this man for real. Well the man is for real. He has taken his passion for organics and has brought these natural teas back in to play at our garden center exclusively. So many people have had a new look on life with the power of these teas. Thanks Gary for all you have taught me in the last year, mostly you have taught me to never give up. I knew then that Gary and Scott had to meet. So, I decided we needed to have an Octoberfest, I of course invited Gary who represented Maestro-Gro and his teas, and Scott and Claudia. Claudia is the other owner of Legacy Performance, I met her and was immediately taken with this lady. She is so full of life and the healthy way to live it. She has a great sense of humor and takes and makes everything a learning experience. I took the Metabolic typing test and it turned out very well, however, there were some things that I needed to work on and she sat with me for an hour and helped me goal set to obtain the maximum potential within myself. Emma Contreras, Wow!!! I met her thru Scott and Claudia and she is the best dog trainer I have ever met. She trains dogs, yes, but she trains the owners. I already knew that I needed training, my dogs don't have any idea that they are dogs. I, of course, need the behavioral training. And she gave it to me. Emma's approach is better than Cesar Milan, no offense. She works with you, the dog and helps you to realize that you can still have fun with a well behaved animal. The animal will not lose its personality because it is well behaved. She also has a great story of transforming her life personally. Too much to write, so I will save that for another newsletter. These are four of the fascinating people that I met in 2010. Of course there are more, but the newsletter is only so long. (Mr. Z., I have known you longer so you don't get to go into my fascinating people of 2010) CONTAINER GARDENING With the economy the way it is and with many people out of work, it makes more sense to grow our own fruits and vegetables. Not everyone has the room for a large inground garden, so you can grow almost everything in containers. This method is easier to handle than inground gardening. You don't have the constant weed problems, and you can put your containers on shelves or a table to lessen the ware on your back. Thanks to all of you four and the many more that I have met in the last year. You have all changed my life in a way that words would not be able to explain. Looking forward to a safe, healthy, wealthy and wise 2011. Each month this year I will spotlight a new “Fascinating Person” - Mona Hall You will need a good planting medium, we recommend a 50/50 mix of Ron's Plant Mix and a good organic potting soil.
