Manifest Destiny and World War I Foldables A great way for students to find and analyze the information that is needed to complete the foldable. Curriculum/State Standards 1. SSUSH 7- Describe the westward growth of the United States; include the emerging concept of Manifest Destiny. 2. SSUSH 15- Analyze the origins and impact of U.S. involvement in World War I. Strategies/Activities The student will analyze the impact of territorial expansion and population growth and the impact of this growth in the early decades of the new nation. The student will describe the movement from U.S. neutrality to engagement in World War I, with reference to unrestricted submarine warfare, domestic policies, and the League of Nations. 1. View PowerPoint of Manifest Destiny/ World War I or a short video excerpt. 2. Discuss with students America’s involvement in each event and read the chapter for homework. 3. Handout one piece of construction paper to each student. 4. Fold the paper into 4 squares and cut apart. 5. Align paper sheets into steps and fold over. You should have 8 pieces of paper in staggered lengths to form the foldable. 6. Punch two holes at the top of the foldable and place yarn into the holes and tie. 7. Cut out teacher made paper slips for each step that students are to write their information on. 8. Glue white strips of paper on each step of the foldable. 9. Students are to find the information about each topic and its relationship to Manifest Destiny/ World War I and write it on the white page of the foldable. 10. The foldable must also include 3 to 5 original drawings, in color, throughout the project. Materials Culminating Activity Overview Students will create a foldable from construction paper and glue the white pages (teacher handout) on each page of the foldable. On each page, students are to explain how each event, person, or concept contributed to Manifest Destiny/ World War I. The completed project looks like a book that can be read containing chapters. Objectives assorted colors of construction paper, yarn, glue, scissors, and colored pencils. Readiness Activity As a class, discuss Manifest Destiny/ World War I. View the teacher made PowerPoints for each event. Point out successes and setbacks to each historical event with the students. Have students read the assigned chapters in their textbooks. Hold a round table class discussion of U.S. involvement in each of these historical events. Each student must contribute two important aspects to the discussion. The teacher will keep a tally sheet of each student’s response.
