Pastor’s Corner
George Leshanski is retiring as the chair of our Pastoral
Council – he’s been a great asset to the Council and to me. He tells
some wonderful stories about his frequent bus trips into New York
City. On one occasion he struck up a conversation with a man sitting
next to him. They began to speak about religion and his companion
told him that he used to be Catholic but now he attends another
Church where he feels more at home because they have coffee and
doughnuts after the Service. Without thinking, George exclaimed, “you
gave up the real presence for a doughnut?” He said the man didn’t
talk to him for the rest of the trip!
Today, we celebrate the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ.
It’s a great gift that the Church has been given and a great gift that we
receive at Mass. Because this is such a wonderful gift – to be able to
consume the very body and blood of Christ – we are given this Sunday
to remember and give thanks. George knows how valuable this gift is
and that is the reason he was so perplexed by the man’s willingness to
give it up so readily. Still, the Eucharist is meant to change us. We
also call Eucharist “communion” and in this communion we are joined
to God and to everyone else who receives this sacrament. This communion forms the Church and the community of which we are a part.
With conscious participation in this communion, we will see a difference in our lives and we will notice a difference in our membership in
the Church. We belong to a Body that acts with the Spirit of Christ; an
awesome gift indeed.
This past weekend, our community hosted a wildly successful
flea market. We had many guests on our property who witnessed this
community working together for the well-being of our Church. Everywhere you could see people in blue “Queen of Peace” shirts offering
help and witnessing to our faith. The mission of our parish is to be the
people of God filled with the presence of Christ. In everything we do,
may this mission shine forth – even when we are making change for a
treasure found at the flea market. I hope that we are not just known in
the West End for a successful flea market. I hope we’re known as a
compassionate community who happens to run one fantastic flea market! I’d like to thank Lynn Smith, Kelly Krechel and Lynn Luck for leading us in this endeavor. Their skill and their faith certainly is apparent
in the way they lead and organized this event.

Mission Statement of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish
As the spiritual home for Catholics in the West End, we are a family of the One, Holy, Catholic,
and Apostolic Church. We are a Sunday people, remade in Baptism, nurtured by the Eucharist,
and guided by the Holy Spirit. Under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we strive to share
our time, talents, and treasures. We are formed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and proclaim the
Kingdom of God by our words and actions.

F
ather Sean’s Blog Hola! Como estas! You can
see that I now learned three new Spanish words. I am
doing well here in San Antonio Texas. Fr. Greg Loughney
and I arrived here at the Mexican American Catholic
College (MACC) last Tuesday, so tomorrow will be a week.
I have been going to class, giving reports and saying Mass
in Spanish. I have been trying to keep out of trouble, but I
did get reprimanded for wearing shorts in the chapel. I feel
like a seminarian again. I also do not fit in the bed I sleep
in, so if anyone wants to donate a bed to Father, I would
appreciate it. (Lol) However, the teachers are very good
and I am learning many things. I am also meeting new
priests here from different parts of the world like Nigeria,
South Korea, and Ireland. San Antonio is a beautiful city
with many things to see. This past Saturday Fr. Greg, some
seminarians and I went to see the Mission Churches founded by Spanish Franciscans in the 1770's. Two of them are
still active churches. I look forward to seeing more of the
city, and learning more Spanish and not eating to many
enchiladas. Please continue to keep praying for me so that
I may learn more than three Spanish words. If you would
like to write to me the
MACC's address is: 3115 West Ashby Place San Antonio,

Word for Life: Man is a being who bears within his heart a thirst
for the infinite, a thirst for truth – a truth which is not partial but capable of explaining life’s meaning – since he was created in the image and likeness of God. The grateful recognition that life is an inestimable gift, then, leads to the discovery of one’s own profound
dignity and the inviolability of every single person. Hence the first
step in education is learning to recognize the Creator’s image in
man, and consequently learning to have a profound respect for
every human being and helping others to live a life consonant with
this supreme dignity.

During the month of June The Scranton Diocesan Council of Catholic
Women would like to remind the faithful that the Solemnity of SS Peter
and Paul on the 29th is the veneration of the two great Apostles that
are the founders of the See of Rome witnessed through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom.
They are the solid rock on which the Church was built. The examples
of these two Apostles should remind us to stand firm in our faith and
support the teachings of the Magisterium of the Church, which consists of the Pope and Bishops. A plenary indulgence may be gained
on this day by anyone who makes devout use of a religious article
blessed by the Pope or any Bishop and who also recites the Apostles
Creed as long as the usual conditions for a plenary indulgence are
satisfied.

NIGHT AT THE RACES
FRIDAY JULY 13TH
Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish Festival activities will begin with A Night at the Races, on
Friday evening July 13th in McCawley Hall, doors open at 6 p.m.
This is a fun filled evening and everyone enjoys themselves taking part in ten video races
throughout the evening. Tickets for the event will be on sale after weekend Masses, or at the
church office during regular business hours. There are ten horses in ten different races and each of those horses need a sponsor. It cost $10 to be a horse sponsor and each of the ten races will have a sponsor winner who
will win a $50 prize. The nice part of being a sponsor is you do not have to be present to win.
You simply select a number from one to ten and if the horse you sponsored wins the race, you are the winner.
There are only 100 opportunities to be a sponsor so please make your
selection early.
Horse sponsorships must be arranged through Tom Whitehead, telephone 570-646-8174 for information. All proceeds will be added to the parish festival fundraising efforts.
