Fourth Sunday of Lent - March 6, 2016
Whoever is in Christ is a new creation:
the old things have passed away;
behold, new things have come.
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
A SUNDAY FOR REJOICING
Today’s Gospel story of the prodigal
son is a favorite of many. We can identify
with all the major figures and their crisscross of emotions. The father’s initial grief
over his young son’s avarice is turned to
relief at his return. The son’s grief over his loss of fortune,
family, and friends is turned to delirious joy at the sight of
his father.
We understand the eldest son’s bewilderment over his
father’s generosity. For the older son, virtue seems not to
be its own reward. For all his honorable toil and loyalty,
there seems to be no celebration. The father, however, is
prodigal in his forgiveness and mercy. He expects the
same generosity from his older son. He wants all to rejoice
when the lost one is found.
This is a Sunday for rejoicing. It’s time to pause, consider, and encourage one another. We are the prodigal
children heading home. We are the elder siblings waiting
with the eager Father, who scans the horizon. In Christ
Jesus we are reconciled to the Father and one another. In
his death and resurrection we have passed over. We are a
new creation. In this we rejoice.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — God’s people enter the promised land, observe the Passover, and eat of the produce of the land (Joshua
5:9a, 10-12) or 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a.
Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord
(Psalm 34) or Psalm 23.
Second Reading — We are now ambassadors for Christ (2
Corinthians 5:17-21) or Ephesians 5:8-14.
Gospel — We must rejoice when our brother who was dead in
sin repents and comes back to life (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32) or John
9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38]. The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the
Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights

This year, having been declared the Special Jubilee
Year of Mercy by Pope Francis, Holy Angels Parish is
sponsoring a pilgrimage to Poland where the ‘Divine
Mercy’ was founded by St. Faustina, to the Czech Republic
where the Infant Jesus of Prague Shrine is, and Ephesus,
Turkey where the house of the Blessed Virgin Mary is
located from September 18th to 29th. Please call our
secretary, Ning Ludovico, at the parish office for more
information and brochures.
What Does Getting INTENSE For Lent Mean?
Time flies so swiftly. It’s now the 4th Sunday of
Lent. Jesus spent 40 intense days in the desert
fasting, praying, and preparing for the most important time
of his life. During that time, Jesus focused on preparing his
body and spirit for the challenges that lay ahead. Our challenges are difficult, too, so the Church modeled the season
of Lent after Jesus’ time in the desert. Fill your Lent this
year with intense fasting, prayer, and preparation.
Fast and abstain. As your health allows, go beyond the
requirements for fasting and abstinence. Don’t just abstain
from meat on Fridays of Lent; add extra days during the
week. Don’t just fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday;
skip a few more meals each week. (But check first with
your doctor if you have health concerns)
Pray with fervor. Consider attending daily Mass, praying
the Rosary once or twice each day, performing the Stations of the Cross each day, prayerfully meditating on
Scripture.
Give as he did. Jesus sacrificed himself for others. Take
up his Cross by sharing what you have with people who
have less. And speaking about taking up his Cross during
the season of Lent, we also are praying the “Stations of
the Cross”. Also called “The Way of the Cross,” this is a
popular devotion that represents fourteen specific events
experienced by Jesus during his trial, crucifixion, death,
and burial. While it is practiced year round, it is particularly
appropriate during the season of Lent, especially on Fridays of Lent. In the early days of the Church, pilgrims visited Jerusalem and prayed at certain points on Jesus’ actual path to Calvary. Now a more symbolic version of this
practice is encouraged as an expression of devotion and
piety.
God bless you.

buenas intenciones y antagonismos. Gracias a Dios,
¡somos cristianos!
