School Description
overnor Sanford Ballard Dole Middle School services students from
the Kalihi area on the western end of Honolulu. The school has
adopted the middle school philosophy which resulted in the
development of a curriculum and instruction focused on student centered
teaching and learning with a strong emphasis on literacy and higher level
thinking processes in all of the content areas. Every faculty member
teaches in his/her area of expertise, offering the students in-depth content
knowledge and quality instruction which inevitably ensures the academic
challenge that Dole has committed to provide for our students. To enrich
this qualitative curriculum and instruction, there is extensive use of
technology, gifted and talented classes, a video/closed circuit group, a
school-to-work enterprise and newly renovated classrooms. In 1997, Dole
Middle School received a six-year accreditation with special
commendations on the positive and caring climate of the school.

Standards Implementation
Summary of Progress
School Vision
Governor Sanford Ballard Dole Middle School develops responsible, healthy, and productive citizens.
School Mission and Purpose
Our school provides students with a standards-based education in a safe, disciplined, and supportive
environment
School Guiding Philosophy
Dole Believes:
•
All students are capable of making gains within a standards-based curriculum.
•
Families and the community influence children
•
Middle school students have different needs from elementary and high school students.
Our Core Values:
•
Offer challenging curriculum that engages adolescent students.
•
Work to meet the academic needs of every individual child.
•
Provide programs and instructional methods that develop the General Learner Outcomes in our
students: Self-Directed Learner, Community Contributor, Complex Thinker, Quality Producer,
Effective Communicator, and Effective and Ethical User of Technology.
•
Provide support to meet the diverse social, emotional, and physical needs of adolescents.
•
Actively solicit participation from administration, teachers, staff, parents, students, and community
partners.
•
Provide a disciplined and orderly school environment.
General Learner Outcomes
At Governor Sanford Ballard Dole Middle School, we strive to develop adolescents who have:
the ability to be responsible for one's own learning.
the understanding that it is essential for human beings to work together.
the ability to be involved in complex thinking and problem solving.
the ability to recognize and produce quality performance and quality products.
the ability to communicate effectively.
the ability to be effective and ethical users of technology.
Findings From Self Study Process
Despite the many problems that seem to confront the school as a learning site, the faculty and
staff pull together to make the school a safe place for all students. The certified staff is qualified and
experienced and there is a positive home/school relationship. The School believes in the partnership of all
role groups for the ultimate success for all at the school. Dole Middle School has also made a firm
commitment to literacy and to the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards. Teachers have made the
standards the core of the curriculum and are ensuring that the standards are integral to everything that is
taught. Alignment and assessment to the standards are an integral part of instruction in delivering quality
education to our students. The attention to the affective domain of our students is important and the
school continues to excel in this area. From the results of the Stanford Achievement Test, there has been
small but steady gains in reading and math over the last few years. Test scores are skewed in the low
average stanines and the school shows a need to move more students into the stanine 5-9 range. The
school is planning for additional professional development in the areas of reciprocal teaching and
differentiation to enhance schoolwide literacy strategies. In addition, the school is developing a plan to
provide support services during school and after school hours for students identified as “gap” or well
below proficiency in English and math. Our school action plan focuses on implementation of schoolwide
literacy strategies in all content areas, continued curriculum alignment, and use of multiple
assessments/evaluation to determine how students are performing in relation to the standards.
Schoolwide assessments in reading, writing, and math provide data to assess our progress. In addition
to our emphasis on schoolwide literacy strategies, Dole is actively seeking parent and community
involvement through community meetings held at Dole and at various community centers. In the
SY2003 -04, Dole’s PTSA will sponsor the first Dole graduation for eighth grade students.
