Carbohydrates often get a bad rap especially when it comes to weight gain. But carbohydrates aren't all bad. Because of their numerous health benefits, carbohydrates have a rightful place in your diet. In fact, your body needs carbohydrates to function well. Your body uses carbohydrates as its main fuel source. Carbohydrates are an essential part of a healthy diet, and they also provide many important nutrients. Also, whole fruits and vegetables add fiber, water and bulk, which help you feel fuller on fewer calories. cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until Choose whole grains. Milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products are good sources of calcium and protein, plus many other vitamins and minerals. And beware of dairy products that have added sugar. Eat more beans and legumes. Legumes, which include beans, peas and lentils, are among the most versatile and nutritious foods available. Added sugar probably isn't harmful in small amounts. But there's no health advantage to consuming any amount of added sugar. In fact too much added sugar lead to health problems as tooth decay, poor nutrition and weight gain. So choose your carbohydrates wisely. Limit foods with added sugars and refined grains, such as sugary drinks, desserts and candy, which are packed with calories but low in nutrition. Instead, go for fruits, vegetables and whole grains. N E V E R L E AV E A C H I L D I N A H OT C A R . . . Every summer, heartbreaking and preventable deaths happen when children are left alone in hot cars. Sometimes parents or caregivers may forget that there is a sleeping child in the back seat and go about their business. It can also occur when kids get into unlocked cars without any adult knowing it happened. Within minutes, they can be in danger. Think it can’t happen to you? Think again! We all get distracted, and in our busy lives, sometimes different people transport children on a day to day basis. If the child has fallen asleep in their car seat, which is usually behind the driver’s seat, there is no visual information to remind the driver there is a kid to drop off and if it isn’t the normal routine, there is even more chance of forgetting to drop the child off. There are ways to help prevent such a tragedy. One of the best is to place your briefcase or purse beside your child so you must grab it before going to work, and can’t help but notice there is a child waiting to be let out. Or, put your diaper bag on the seat next to you, so that you're reminded that you have the child with you. Don’t make a habit of running in to the store and leaving kids in the car. Do get in the habit of looking in the front and back seats every time you exit the car. See a kid alone in a hot car? Get them out ASAP if they are in distress and if you can open the door. Otherwise, call 911 immediately. Don't let your children play in your car, make sure the car's doors and trunk are locked when you're not using it, and keep the keys out of kids' reach. This goes for old cars that might be in the yard being worked on as well. That may help prevent children from getting accidentally locked in the car. You can't stop a child from being afraid by frightening her even more, It's helpful to tell your toddler when there's (truthfully) nothing to fear, so if your child is refusing to bathe because of fears of the bathtub- but it isn't helpful to tell her not to be afraid. Saying "The tub is give up trying to force it and just wipe her down with a wash rag perfectly safe, but I can see it frightens you, so let's just use the sink instead. for the moment," shows your child that you're on her side. In the meantime, patience is someone made you hold one? a virtue we can all work on! :) REMOVING TICKS... Because ticks carry the germ that causes Lyme disease, as well as other communicable diseases, they should be carefully and entirely removed if you find one on your child’s body. Clean the area with an alcohol soaked cotton ball. Using blunt tweezers, grasp the tick as near to its mouth parts and as close to the skin as you can. Steadily pull the tick up and out. But do not squeeze or twist the tick. Do not attempt to pull the tick off with your fingers, as the head may break off from the body and become embedded in the skin. Do not use heat from a match or a lit cigarette to remove the tick, as the heat may cause the tick to embed itself even farther into the skin. Cleanse the bitten area thoroughly with an antiseptic. Watch the site of the bite for signs of redness, swelling or a bulls -eye shaped rash. Consult with your doctor about how to best treat your child’s bite. If you are having difficulty getting the tick to release its mouth pincers, consider putting a blob of dish detergent over the site and waiting 5 minutes. Often this will dislodge the tick without pulling and struggling to remove them. If you know you’re going to be in tick-infested areas, use a repellant containing DEET, wear long pants and check everyone over thoroughly after returning home.
