VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Words of Winter Goodall Library’s Seasonal Newsletter Welcome to the first installment of Goodall Library's seasonal newsletter! For our winter edition we'd like to introduce you to our staff, let you know about various events happening at the Library, and tell you about some exciting new arrivals in book and DVD. MEET THE GOODALL LIBRARY STAFF 952 Main St. Sanford, ME 04073 324-4714 Year-Round Hours: Monday-Thursday 10a-8p Friday 10a-5p Saturday 10a-4p lbgoodall.org Jackie is our Director. Although she spends a good deal of time in her office, you will see her at various times covering the Reference Desk, Children's Room and Circulation Desk. She is always available if you have concerns or questions. Jean is our Assistant Director. She spends a fair amount of time in her office as well, but you will see her frequently in all areas of the Library, covering the Circulation Desk in particular. If help is needed or issues arise at the front desk, she is typically the first one called. Jason is our Reference Librarian. He is in charge of the Reference area of the Library and Inter-Library Loan. He also coordinates and supports use of the desktop computers and copier machine. Deidre is our Children's Librarian. She is in charge of the Children's Room. She also organizes and implements many special events, programs and activities for children of all ages. Linda, Bob, Michelle, Lisa, Andrea, and Diana are our support staff. Linda catalogs materials as they come in; Bob covers all desks, provides technical support and maintains our website; Michelle covers all desks and assists with cataloging and Inter-Library Loan; Lisa covers all desks, processes and repairs books, and organizes the ongoing book sale; Andrea maintains our Facebook page, provides graphic design and technical support, and covers the Circulation Desk and Chil- dren's Room; Diana assists with programming and covers the Circulation Desk and Children's Room. We are a team who enjoy working together to provide our community with the many services the Library offers. ON-GOING AT THE LIBRARY We offer museum passes which allow free entry for our members. February School Vacation Week Story Time, Wednesday Feb 22 from 11:00-12:00 (this is in addition to our regular story times), for children & their parents ages 3-6 (slightly older/younger okay), enjoy stories and a craft and even a light snack. Come join in the fun! Marshmallow Engineering (Steam Program), Tuesday Feb 21 from 3:30-5:00, ages 512 & parents, learn some of the things architects and construction workers need to know, challenge yourself to build towers and other contraptions with just toothpicks and marshmallows, some exciting books on construction and building will also be available for the budding construction worker & architect to check out. STEAMy Story Time: DINOSAURS, Wednesday Mar 15 from 3:30-5:00, children ages 3-7 & parents (slightly older/younger okay), enjoy dinosaur stories, make dinosaur fossils, dig for dinosaurs and make dinosaur "skeletons". If you love dinosaurs, come join in the fun. VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 NEW books, books on CD, and DVDs are arriving weekly. This is just a sample, there are many more. Come in and check them out! New Fiction titles of interest: The Liberation by Ian Tregillis, bk. 3 of the Alchemy Wars fantasy series. Robots, alternate history, by "a major new talent" says George R.R. Martin. For those who love cozy mysteries two new series kick-offs, Murder with Fried Chicken and Waffles by A.L. Herbert, and A Beeline to Murder by Meera Lester. Out of Bounds, the page-turning new mystery by Val McDermid, Faithful, by Alice Hoffman, "a soul-searching story about a young woman struggling to re-define herself and the power of love, family and fate", The Flame Bearer, Bernard Cornwell's new addition to the Saxon Tales, and The Twenty-Three, Linwood Barclay's latest novel in the suspenseful Promise Falls series, are all highly recommended and available at the Library. New in large print, Can't Help Falling, humorous, heart-felt romance by Kara Isaac, and The American Girl, a "deliciously creepy, contemporary, twisting mystery" by bright new talent, Kate Horsely. New arrivals on CD by favorite authors James Patterson, Jojo Moyes, Fannie Flagg, Lee Child, James Rollins, Jeffrey Archer, and David Baldacci. WORDS OF WINTER Non Fiction titles of interest: Bear: The Life and Times of Augustus Owsley Stanley III by Robert Greenfield. Bear was an American audio engineer and chemist. He was a key figure in the hippie movement in San Francisco during the 1960's and played a pivotal role in the counterculture of that time. Upstream: Selected Essays by Mary Oliver. A collection of essays by the poet Mary Oliver in which she reflects on the mysteries of the natural world and her lifelong love of literature. Wild Maine Adventure by William Emrich. The story of what happens when a man pursues his dream of building a cabin in the Maine woods. New DVDs include Roots, the classic American saga about a family's multi-generational struggle to resist slavery, re-imagined for a new generation. Based on Alex Haley's best-selling novel (we also have the original). Captain Fantastic stars Viggo Mortensen in the NYT Critics' Pick, Captain Fantastic, about an unconventional man who raises his six children in the forest of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society. Trials of Muhammad Ali is a documentary that chronicles the life of the boxer outside of the ring.
