There is an Athletic Trainer at both the east and west campuses. Every coach can help the athlete find the Athletic Trainer’s office, or can call the Athletic Trainer via their cell or office phone. ○ If the injury seems to warrant a visit to the Doctor, the Athletic Trainer will call home. They will also provide recommendations of where to go. ○ If the injury simply needs ice, or a few days off of practice/games, your child may come home with ice wrapped to that body part, a brace, tape, or an ACE bandage. ○ If the injury warrants crutches, the parent will be immediately contacted. ○ Following the acronym RICE is always a good principle after an injury: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. ● What if my child is injured at an away game? ○ Almost all away games will still have an Athletic Trainer present. The coach, or home school Athletic Trainer, should let the Leyden Athletic Trainer know what happened. The coach may also call home. ○ The parent/guardian may always call a Leyden Athletic Trainer for advice as well. Their cell phones are available for you to call at any time. ○ It is always at your discretion to take them to a doctor/hospital. ● If my child cannot participate in practice or play in a game due to their injury, should they stay home? ○ We always recommend that the athlete come to the Athletic Training room to try and do some sort of therapy/rehab. ○ If they have seen a Doctor and were recommended to do Physical Therapy, they should try and do that 23x/week until back to play. ○ It varies by team/coach, but it is always encouraged to try and still be a part of the team by coming to practices/games to support your team. Especially if the injury is not seasonending. ● Does the school have insurance to help cover the cost of an injury my child sustained during a schoolsponsored athletic event? ○ Any questions regarding insurance should be made to the Athletic Director’s Office: 8474513071 ○ An accident report will be filled out by the Athletic Trainer or Coach after an injury has occurred during practice or a game (home or away). Specifically if it requires the child to see a doctor/seek medical treatment outside of school. ● If my child is doing therapy in the Athletic Training Room, what sorts of things are you doing? ○ Every injury is different, and treated specifically. ○ We focus on reducing swelling, increasing/restoring range of motion (mobility), as well as flexibility and strengthening. ○ As healing progresses we advance as tolerated, eventually leading into functional training which is sport specific training to that specific athlete. ○ You are always more than welcome to call with any questions/concerns, and calls home from us will be made as needed as well. ● Can you give my child medicine? ○ No, we cannot give any sort of medication to minors. ○ We do have electrolyte tablets that we give to some athletes during excessively hot days/games who are experiencing muscle cramping. ○ We have an emergency inhaler and epipen on hand as well. ● Are you qualified to do CPR/use an AED? ○ Yes, we are qualified and both John and Lindsay have been previous CPR instructors. ○ Many, if not all by now, of our coaches are also certified. ● Are you a Leyden employee? ○ We are hired by NovaCare Rehabilitation.
