We could all use a break!
The time off from school
affords us all the opportunity to refocus our attention on family and friends.
The “pay it forward” campaign is a magic way to
unwrap gifts of generosity
that don’t have to cost you
anything but your time.
However, sometimes we
find ourselves with time on
our hands and not a clue of
what we can do. Unexpectedly boredom sets in and
then too soon we are back
to school. Set some goals
to be the reason for the
season.
Think of creative ways at
home you can lighten someone’s chore or bring a smile
to their face. We would
like to feature your random
acts of kindness in our next
newsletter.

A central bulletin board to house upcoming
events and newsworthy announcements is
a “must have” necessity in the middle
school courtyard. Classroom bell
schedules, test / project/ classroom
announcements, and secret-pal messages
are just a few advantages. A message center would be beneficial for everybody.

Although graffiti is a concern, most middle

1. Taking “Spirit” count
Q How do you handle a break-up if they
bad-mouth you afterwards?
A Ignore the person as long as you can and they
will eventually lose interest, but if it becomes a
form of constant harassment, tell a parent or
teacher.
Q How can I improve my grades?
A Go to after school clinics, or meet with a
study buddy, or ask for practice worksheets.
Talk to your teacher about getting extra help;
email your teacher.
Q How can I become more popular?
A According to Webster's Popularity means
well-liked. Teens mistakenly judge other’s by how
many friends you have, and if you are smart, or
how you dress. Popularity is really not the way
to measure “you”. How you feel about yourself,
your self-esteem, matters the most.
ADD TO A PERSON...NEVER TAKE AWAY...MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Making a difference might seem
like work, but not for Poet 7th
grader, Damon Jackson, who
recently reported bright and early
Saturday morning Nov. 13, at 6 AM
sharp to Brentwood’s Sutter Delta
Hospital. He volunteered his time
doing something you’d never expect to see him doing.
He donated volunteer hours
affixing labels to nutrition bars.
Afterwards he passed them out to

in volunteering at a medical facility
Protecting Marie by Kevin Henke’s
If you’ve ever wondered why no one will
listen to you, then you’ll easily relate to
Fanny. Twelve-year old Fanny loved her dog,
Nellie, but her “artist” dad gave it away when
it wouldn’t fit into his organized world.
Their relationship was founded on betrayal
and then distrust, but it is put to the test
once again. This is a story about wanting,
getting, and realizing that nothing is that easy.
Will he get rid of the new puppy, Dinner, or
has he given up some of his cruel ways? It is a
sad story but at the same time happy.
Getting to know Fanny is like reminiscing
with an old friend; she loves cookie baking,
ice skating, and opening presents. Will her
father will ever realize what a neat kid she is?
The author, Kevin Henkes, has also
written The Birthday Room, Sun and Spoon,
Two Under Par, Words of Stone, The Zebra
Wall, and Olive’s Ocean, so you may have
heard of him. This is definitely a book you’ll
want to reread.
in Brentwood. As it turns out his
mom works for the hospital, so he is
not there alone. His shift was from
6 AM to 3 PM, so he was able to
clock in 9 hours credited to 20 hours
of community service AVID students
commit to when they interview for
the class.
In addition, Damon’s kindness certainly made a difference in the health
of many people he came into contact
with while volunteering.
