Any variations which may occur in the spellings of names are recorded as written in the records at the time. Richard Alexander AITKEN was born 25 September 1849 in Dunse, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. Richard entered into a five year contract with the Falkland Islands Company Ltd and left London June 1870 for Montevideo in the paddle steamer La Plata and then from Montevideo to the Falkland Islands in the schooner Foam, arriving 23 July 1870. By 14 October 1870 he was living at Cantera House. [FIC Despatches LO-St 1867-1877, pg 406; FIC sundry Letters 1868-1871, pg 648; Obituary Penguin 29 Jun 1934] Richard, a shepherd living at Darwin, was married to Christina McKINNON, minor, living at Cantera, 11 July 1872 at Cantera, according to the Presbyterian form after banns by Rev. A Yeoman, Minister. The witnesses were Andrew Kyle and Mary Ann McKinnon. Richard’s father was recorded as Francis Aitken, shepherd and Christina’s father was recorded as N McKinnon, shepherd. Richard was one on the first of the FI Volunteers, taking the oath as an original member 21 June 1892 at Government House and was awarded the long service medal in 1913 when he retired. Richard, a gardener, age 84, died 25 June 1934 and is buried in Grave K1065. Christina died 4 December 1940, age 95, and is buried in Grave K1173. Neillie (Ellen) McKINNON born 1 May 1869 and baptised 21 November 1869 by Holy Trinity Church. Her father was not recorded. Ellen was married to Donald McCASKILL, age 23 and a shepherd, 12 April 1888 in the Service room according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by Licence by Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were Alexander Hunter and Jessie Cameron. Donald’s father was recorded as Donald McCaskill, shepherd, and Ellen’s father was recorded as William Johnson, shepherd. According to his obituary, Donald spent most of his life of the West Falkland, coming to live in Stanley in 1922. Donald died 7 August 1936, age 69, and is buried in Grave K1097. Ellen “Nellie” “Granny McAskill” died 5 July 1969 at Stanley, age 100, and is buried in Grave K1785. Children of Richard and Christina AITKEN: 1. Jane AITKEN born 24 August 1872 at Lion Creek. Her father’s occupation was recorded as shepherd. Jane was married to Edward RUSHEN (not in Falkland Islands). Jane and her three children arrived from Punta Arenas on the Sakkarah 17 February 1899. 2. Ann AITKEN born 30 December 1873 at Lion Creek. Her father’s occupation was recorded as shepherd. Ann, age 17 & living in Stanley, was married to William Henry GOSS, age 28, a cook living in Stanley and San Carlos, 24 August 1890 in the house of Mrs Goss according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by Licence by Lowther E Brandon MA Colonial Chaplain. Ann signed with a X. The witnesses were R Aitken and Ann E Davis. William’s father was recorded as Jacob Napoleon Goss, merchant. William died 23 September 1935, age 72, and is buried in Grave M1083. Ann died 23 August 1937 in Stanley and is buried in Grave M1114. 3. William AITKEN born 24 May 1875 on Speedwell Island. His father’s occupation was recorded as shepherd. William, age 16 and a publican’s assistant, died 30 September 1891 from phthisis and is buried at Port San Carlos in Grave 2. 4. Mary AITKEN born 24 October 1877 on Speedwell Island. Her father’s occupation was recorded as shepherd. Mary was married to Albert Henry HILLS, gardener, 20 August 1910 at the Registrar's Office, Stanley by G Hurst, Registrar General. The witnesses were Silvester Barnes and Hannah E A Aitken. Albert’s father was recorded as David Hills, deceased foreman. Albert was born 20 April 1888 in Winchmore Hill, London, England. 5. Norman McKinnon AITKEN born 11 October 1878 on Speedwell Island and baptised 13 February 1880 by Holy Trinity Church. His father’s occupation was recorded as shepherd. Norman worked for the Falkland Islands Company Limited 4 January to 19 May 1899 in the Lafonia area on a monthly wage of £5-0-0. He recommenced employment in the Lafonia area 14 October 1899 and worked until 12 March 1909. Norman departed 19 May 1909 on board the Orcoma which was bound for Liverpool. Norman arrived back in Stanley 21 February 1911 on board the Oravia. He departed for Punta Arenas on the Oravia 3 May 1911, returning 21 February 1912. Norman died 1 December 1914 from an accident (drowned while crossing between Engineer Pt & the W/T Station) Norman, age 37 and a private in the FI Volunteer Corps, was buried Sunday 6 December 1914 in Grave A777. 6. Elizabeth Inglis AITKEN born 25 October 1879 and baptised 13 February 1880 by Holy Trinity Church. Her father’s occupation was recorded as shepherd. Elizabeth died 23 October 1888 at Darwin from tubercular phthisis and is buried in Grave A85. 7. John “Jack” AITKEN born 5 August 1881 on Speedwell Island. His father’s occupation was recorded as shepherd. Jack died 9 May 1954 and is buried in Grave A1533 next to his brother Norman. 8. Richard Alexander AITKEN born 12 May 1883 on Speedwell Island and baptised 13 August 1884 by Holy Trinity Church. His father’s occupation was recorded as foreman. Richard died 7 April 1911 from phthisis and is buried in Grave A734. 9. Robert Phorsen AITKEN born 5 December 1884 and baptised 8 March 1885 in Stanley by the Tabernacle. His father’s occupation was recorded as shepherd. Robert died 31 August 1893 from consumption of the bowels and is buried in Grave A84. 10. James AITKEN born 20 December 1885 in Stanley and baptised 13 February 1887 by the Tabernacle. His father’s occupation was recorded as labourer. 11. Jannet Harriet AITKEN born 30 November 1887 and baptised 4 November 1888 by the Tabernacle. Her father’s occupation was recorded as labourer. Jannet was married to William Mendoza PARRIN, shepherd, 30 March 1905 in the house of Henry Parrin, Stanley by Lowther E Brandon MA Dean & Colonial Chaplain. The witnesses were George Parrin and John Aitken. William’s father was recorded as Henry Parrin, waiter. William, a labourer age 64, died 30 April 1945 and is buried in Grave O1136. Jannet died 13 August 1952 from pulmonary tuberculosis and is buried in Grave 1490. 12. Elizabeth Inglis AITKEN born 3 September 1889 in Stanley and baptised 17 November 1889 by the Tabernacle. Her father’s occupation was recorded as labourer. Elizabeth was married to Silvester BARNES, labourer, 12 July 1910 in Christ Church Cathedral by Edward J Seymour, Chaplain & Hon Canon. The witnesses were Richard Aitken, Hannah Elizabeth Agnes Aitken and Alexander McIntosh Barnes. Silvester’s father was recorded as Arthur James Barnes, shepherd. Elizabeth died 3 July 1939, age 49, of pulmonary tuberculosis and is buried in Grave K1135. Silvester died 19 May 1961 at Stanley and is buried in Grave Q1696. 13. Hannah Elizabeth Agnes AITKEN born 2 September 1893 in Stanley and baptised 22 October 1893 by Holy Trinity Church. Her father’s occupation was recorded as blacksmith. Hannah was married to William Brown VERRILL, mariner, 17 July 1916 at Christ Church Cathedral by Special Licence by J Stanley Smith, Clerk in Holy Orders. The witnesses were A A Felton and Harriet McAskill. William’s father was recorded as John William Verrill, mariner. William was in the Falklands coaling the Fleet. In January and November 1919 William wrote from 11 Gray Street, Whitby to the Manager of the Falkland Islands Company Ltd applying for the position of master of the ss Falkland. The witnesses were William Westerling and Sybella Ellen McAskill. Frederick’s father was recorded as Edwin Gleadell, labourer. Christina, divorced, was married to (2) Henry John BONNER, labourer, 14 August 1925 at the Registrar's Office, Stanley by Special Licence by M Craigie-Halkett, Registrar General. The witnesses were V Atkins and A O Sullivan. Henry’s father was recorded as William Bonner, carter. Henry went to Montevideo on medical in 1962. He died prior to 1968 (not in Falkland Islands). Christina died 8 March 1968, age 78, at Stanley and is buried in Grave T2098. 2. Sybella Ellen McASKILL born 28 May 1890. Sybella was married to William David Noah BETTS, shepherd, 30 March 1910 at Pebble Island by Special Licence by J Meredith Bate, Assistant Cathedral Chaplain. The witnesses were Ella Esther Elizabeth Betts and Charles Edward Kelway. William’s father was recorded as John Cranmer Betts, manager. Sybella died 26 June 1967 at Stanley and is buried in Grave T2075. William died 20 October 1967 at Stanley and is buried in Grave T2076. 3. Edith Ann “Edie” McASKILL born 9 September 1893 (twin) at Roy Cove. Edie and Harriet were bridesmaids for the wedding of Edith Betts and John Lyse on Pebble Island 25 May 1902. Edith was married to John Falkland BIGGS, general labourer, 10 July 1911 at Christ Church Cathedral by Special Licence by Edward J Seymour, Dean & Chaplain. The witnesses were Christina Goss and John Alazia. John’s father was recorded as Edward Biggs, deceased gardener. John died 16 October 1967 at Stanley and is buried in Grave L1772. Edith died 26 July 1974 at Stanley and is buried in Grave L1832. 4. Harriet Mary McASKILL born 9 September 1893 (twin) at Roy Cove. Edie and Harriet were bridesmaids for the wedding of Edith Betts and John Lyse on Pebble Island 25 May 1902. Harriet was married to Arthur Alfred FELTON, mariner, 24 July 1916 at Christ Church Cathedral by Banns by J Stanley Smith, Clerk in Holy Orders. Donald, a shepherd, was married to Susan Blanche JOHNSON 22 April 1929 at Port Howard, West Falklands by Special Licence by S E E Aylward, Clerk in Holy Orders. The witnesses were George Fredrick Johnson and Beatrice Mary Malvina Johnson. Susan’s father was recorded as Fredrick George Johnson, foreman. William, a mariner, was married to Grace Elizabeth MILLER 18 July 1936 at St Mary's Catholic Church, Stanley by Banns by Hugh Drum, RC Priest. Iris Dwenda Margaret BARNES born 19 December 1928. Iris, a nurse, was married to Hugh FINLAYSON, storekeeper, 17 March 1949 at Christ Church Cathedral by R G R Calvert, Senior Chaplain.
