March 20, 2017
Greetings Everyone,
Well, another basketball season is in the books. Congratulations to all of you. I hope you all feel that you were an inspiration and
an example to your players this year. Special congratulations to all of you whose teams played in post-season games, and I would
like to give extra recognition to those who were fortunate to compete at the State Tournament.
I enjoyed attending both the boys and girls tournaments. It was wonderful seeing and talking with old friends at the Dome or at
the Sunset Station Pavilion. The coaching profession is so special. Not only do you have the opportunity to work with and shape
young players, but the camaraderie and friendship you are able to forge with other coaches is priceless.
With the close of the season, the next big event is the TABC Clinic in May. I would like to urge each of you to make plans to
attend. The clinic will feature some great speakers. I also would like to remind you that the TABC camps are starting to fill up.
Encourage all players in your community to attend. Lastly, and as I have emphasized in my last two messages, if you know anyone
who has yet to join TABC this year, encourage them to join.
I wish each of you a fantastic finish this school year. I look forward to seeing you at the Clinic. If we haven’t met, I hope you
will make a point to introduce yourself to me. Be blessed.
Sincerely,
Herb More – TABC President
Texas State Basketball Champions Crowned
Early March saw 26 state champions crowned in Texas high school basketball. The UIL
championships were played in the Alamodome in San Antonio. TAPPS played in Abilene and
SPC played in Houston. All 48 of the UIL teams who made it to the final four were coached by
TABC members! Congratulations to the state championship teams. Their coaches are the
TABC Coaches of the Year and they will be presented a watch at the All-Star and Honors banquet at the TABC clinic.

TABC is happy to announce that we will be adding several awards to the many that
are already give out annually. College Men’s and Women’s Assistant Coaches of
the Year will be awarded following each season. In addition Academic All-State is
being expanded to honor college players as well.
If you would like to nominate one of your college assistant coaches for one of
these honors, please send your women’s nominations to Jason Martens at St.
Mary’s and men’s nominations to Scott Schumacher at Blinn College. Both the
assistant coach being nominated and their head coach must be TABC members in
order for them to be eligible for the award.
For Academic All-State a player must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.
Current players, student assistants and graduate assistants are eligible as long as
their head coach is a TABC member. Transfer students must be at their current
school for one academic year. College and university students must be at least a
sophomore athletically or academically and junior college students must have completed a minimum of 36 credit hours. As with the other college awards, women’s
nominations go to Jason Martens and men’s nominations go to Scott Schumacher.

After 46 years of coaching and teaching, JD Mayo is retiring. Coach Mayo started his career
as an assistant to John Paul Fultz at Dallas Spruce HS for five years before being named head
coach at Dallas Skyline HS. After 699 wins in his 33 years at Skyline he finished his career
with five years at Nocona and three at Joshua. JD has served TABC in many capacities including as president in 2010-11 and finished his varsity career with over 800 wins.
***************************************************************************
The Bullard HS girls had two players with over 100 made three point field goals for the season. Hannah Lloyd made 121 and Lauren Zachry swished 111. In addition to the two seniors the Lady Panthers team total was 287 for coach Barry Gill. They were eliminated by
state champion Argyle in the regional semifinals finishing with a 31-7 season record.
***************************************************************************
Will Parker played HS basketball at FW Southwest and college hoops at Texas Wesleyan
graduating in 2003. After serving as an athletic trainer he returned to his alma mater as an
assistant coach in 2008. In 2012 he moved to Haltom as an assistant to Todd Shelton for
three years. He got his first head coaching job in Dublin in 2015 and inherited a young team
that went 7-19. In his second year the Lions improved to 24-8 and were 9-1 district champs
in 6-3A before winning their bi-district game. Look for good things to continue at Dublin in
the future.
***************************************************************************
Last month we reported that Orange Grove had a father / son coaching combination in Jeff
(father) and Jordan(son) Huber. The Huber's took it up a notch by both being selected district coach of the year. Jeff was honored by his district peers on the girls side and Jordan by
the boys.
***************************************************************************
For those who keep up with the TABC weekly rankings during the year our committees did
another good job. Of the 12 teams that won the state UIL championships all were in the top
ten in the final rankings with seven finishing the regular season as # 1 in their respective
class. The best classes were 3A boys where the final four were ranked 1, 2, 3 and 5. Class
1A boys also had all in the top 10. In 2A girls all four were in the top 10 and 6A girls barely
missed with 1, 3, 4 and 11. The two lowest ranked state champions were 6A Cy-Falls boys
(#8) and 5A boys Timberview (#7). All boys final four teams were in the final top 25 and
only two teams in the girls final four weren’t ranked. Congratulations to Flour Bluff girls
and Wharton girls for proving our committees wrong. Thanks to all who contributed to the
TABC rankings. We will do it again in six months with the preseason rankings and playoff
picks.
***************************************************************************
Mansfield Timberview and Argyle qualified both their boys and girls teams for the state
tournament in 2017 with each one bringing home a championship trophy. Timberview’s
boys (Duane Gregory) eased by Fort Bend Marshall (Gary Nichols) for the boys title while
the Argyle boys (Russell Perkins) lost a semi-final nail biter to state champion Silsbee (Joe
Segler) 46-45. In the girls tournament Argyle (Skip Townsend) won their third consecutive
state title while Timberview (Kit Martin) was edged 47-45 by Canyon (Joe Lombard). It
was Canyon’s fourth title in a row and 19th out of 27 final four appearances. The Nazareth
girls (Eric Schilling) won their 21st state championship in 26 final four tries to take the 1A
girls state title.
***************************************************************************
The Fort Bend ISD teams have built an impressive resume in boys basketball by sending a
representative to the final four seven of the last 10 years. If we go back to 2000 they have
qualified eleven teams including four state champions. Fort Bend ISD has eleven teams and
Marshall, Elkins, Travis, Hightower, Bush, Dulles and Willowridge have all made state tournament trips with Hightower (3), Willowridge (2) and Travis (2) coming multiple times.
Ronnie Courtney won back to back titles at Willowridge in 2000 and 2001 and won again at
Bush in 2010. Gary Nichols won the title at Willowridge back in 1994 and brought Marshall
in 2017. Craig Brownson brought Travis twice winning it all in 2012. Albert Thomas
(Elkins), Mike Carrabine (Dulles), Greg Wise (Hightower-2) and David Green
(Hightower) were the other Fort Bend final four coaches.
