Be sure to plant some additional native flowering plants near your Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa). They act as a runway to attract the butterflies and also provide nectar. Aim for a variety of plants that bloom at different times to have flowers all season. If ornamentals are used, be sure not to get ones that are too far from native – they lose their nectar when extra petals are bred in. FLOWERS: Western Columbine – early season Balsamroot - early season Eriogonums – early/mid season Lupines – early/mid season Penstemons (P. humilis, P. speciosa are great.
