Factoring Trinomials (last term ­)
Recall:
Multiply the following polynomials
a. (r + 4)(r – 7)
b. (a – 2)(a + 5)
To factor a Trinomial: * the factors of c must add to b 1. write two sets of parentheses, with x as the first term in each (x )(x )
2. List the factors of c, off to the side
3. eliminate factors that will not add up to b
4. place factors in parentheses with correct signs
5. check – distribute (box method)
**if the sign of c is negative, the signs of the factors will be different**
‐ if c is negative and b is positive, the bigger factor will be positive
‐ if c is negative and b is negative, the bigger factor will be negative
