Third Grade Vocabulary 11-12-12 1. array – an arrangement of objects in equal rows. An array is used to help with multiplication and division problems. 3 X 5 = 15 or 15 3 = 5 Ex. – 2. sum – total; the result of addition Example: 3 + 4 = 7 (sum) 3. difference – the result of subtraction Example: 5 – 2 = 3 (difference) 4. product – the result of multiplication Example: 2 x 5 = 10 (product) 5. estimate – a number close to an exact amount. Example: an estimate for the sum of 19 + 48 is 70. 19 rounds to 20 and 48 rounds to 50. 6. addends – any number being added Example: 6 (addend) + 7 (addend) = 13 7. digit-any of the symbols used to write numbers (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0) Example: 4,256 8. equation – mathematical sentence with an equal sign Example: 5 +3 = 8 and b + 7 = 15 are both equations 9. Addition – the process of adding digits together to find the sum. 10. Place Value – a system used to tell how much a digit based on groups of 10. 11. pattern – a series of numbers or figures that follows a rule Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 Rule - +2 12. Regrouping – Forming a new group based on groups of 10. 13. Skip Counting – Counting by 2’s, 3’s, 4’s and so on. 14. pictograph – a graph that uses pictures or symbols to show data. Example: 15. line plots-a graph showing frequency of data on a number line Example: 16. Axes/Axis – Perpendicular lines used as reference lines on a graph –X Axis and Y Axis. EX: 17. Chart – A way to show information, such as in a graph or table. 18. Bar Graph – A graph using bars to show data. EX: 19. Table – A way of displaying data in rows and columns EX: 20.
