CALL DAN FOR MORE INFORMATION 406-780-0149 $40/month Published every Monday, Wednesday & Friday Monday, November 28, 2016 LIFE EXPECTANCY UP: Volume 1, Issue 129 People are living longer than ever but men still trail women in life expectancy, a new Duke University study shows. An international team of researchers has reviewed data from the 18th century to the present and found that the last few generations have had the largest increase in life expectancy in the history of humans. For example, life expectancy in Sweden has increased from the mid-30s to over 80. But despite the overall increase in life expectancy, men still tend to have shorter lives than women. Possible reasons include genetics and higher levels of risky behavior in men. (“Don’t worry, honey. I’ll just balance a kitchen chair on the hood of the car so I can reach up to hang the Christmas lights.”) WASTE WATER: When it comes to water consumption, some of us are greedier than others. Americans, while perhaps the cleanest, are the worst offenders. According to Statistica, the US uses 1,630 cubic meters per year, followed by Estonians, New Zealanders, and Canadians. Germans, by contrast, use just 400 cubic meters and the UK only 140. German tradition suggests that babies and young children need to be thrown in the tub only once or twice a week. Teens get a bit oilier and tend to play more sports, so once-a-day is a good guideline. But people in their 20s-to-50s can cut back to every other day and even less in their golden years because elderly skin tends to dry out. (A surefire way to cause quite a stink.) AMAZING TURKEY FACTS: • Male turkeys are called ‘gobblers’ after the gobble call they make to announce themselves to females. Other turkey sounds include ‘purrs’, ‘yelps’, and ‘kee-kees’. • Both gobblers and hens have a ‘snood’ (a dangle-y appendage on the face), a ‘wattle’ (the red bit hanging under the chin), and only a few feathers on the head. • Eating the skin on a serving of roast turkey (dark meat) adds about 18% more calories to a serving without the skin. • Nutritionists believe that the amount of tryptophan in turkey is insufficient by itself to induce sleepiness. Rather, it’s the traditional bread-potato-stuffing-pie Thanksgiving meal as a whole that triggers after-dinner lethargy. Many might argue that the traditional red-and-white candies are perfect the way they are, but some other holiday deviants disagree. If you’re sick of peppermint, you might be tempted to try a candy cane that tastes like … a pickle. Believe it or not, Amazon has a whole slew of flavors to choose from: bacon, wasabi, gravy, and coffee among them. The unusual flavors are perfect for anyone with offbeat taste buds or a mean sense of humor. The pickle canes are decorated in bright green, so they look festive enough for even the most traditional tree. (We say if it isn’t peppermint, it’s blasphemy.) PC HOLIDAYS: ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS HERE! CALL DAN FOR MORE INFORMATION 406-780-0149 $35/month City employees in Bloomington, Indiana will indeed get paid time off for ‘Good Friday’ and ‘Columbus Day’ in 2017, but the holidays won’t go by those names anymore. Bloomington mayor John Hamilton has announced that the days are to be redubbed ‘Spring Holiday’ and ‘Fall Holiday’ as a way to “demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity”. Good Friday, of course, precedes the Christian celebration of Easter and commemorates the day Christ was crucified. Columbus Day marks the 1492 arrival of explorer Christopher Columbus in the Americas. Hamilton claims the new names better reflect cultural sensitivity in the workplace. (But they have about as much pizzaz as the ‘Bank Holiday’ in Britain.) AMAZING FACT: The wild turkey was hunted nearly to extinction by the early 1900s, when the population reached a low of around 30,000 birds. But restoration programs across North America have brought the numbers up to about 7 million. ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS HERE!
