WHERE IS YOUR JOY?
Joy is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to Saint
Paul, in his letter to the Galatians 5: 22-23. As a fruit, it is
then born out of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, as a
result of our work of sanctification, rooted in the theological
virtues of faith, hope and charity. So when I ask, “Where is
your joy?” I mean to ask, “Which areas of your life are bearing much fruit?”
My joy is in my priesthood. The Lord has called me to be a priest,
and for years, I have engaged the time of preparation, studies and
formation, and even when I got ordained, I still continued to keep the
spirit of preparation, formation and learning. I have found much joy in
the priesthood, in being part of people’s lives, in being able to offer
hope in times of deep suffering and pain, in being a witness to the
milestones in people’s lives, in being able to partake of the sacrament,
in being an instrument of God’s work of salvation in our world today. I
can imagine that this holds true for every vocation, including married
life. I am sure that people also find their joy in their calling to be husband or wife, and parents and grandparents. Even in the difficulties
and challenges of raising a family, there is so much joy.
Joy is in my heart and soul. Joy is a disposition of the heart that is
never really affected by the present circumstances. How many times
have we heard of stories of saints who faced martyrdom, with joy, they
even managed to say a joke as they were dying. Think about the
women and children who live in the heart of poverty, and yet have the
most disarmingly beautiful smiles in their faces. That’s because joy in
rooted in Jesus Christ, whose power is beyond the comprehension of
the world. Because it is in my heart, it cannot be stolen. Because it is
in my soul, joy is eternal. It is the building block to the beatific vision,
like that of Saint Thomas, or perhaps the ecstasy of Saint Teresa.
Joy is in my good work. There is joy in doing good for others. I was
just talking to one of the volunteers of the Azzarelli Clinic, and was
testifying about the joy that she feels about being there, working with
good people, and doing something good for those who are in need in
our community. Let’s face it – doing good brings joy. But the authentic person who truly has joy, is not doing the good work in order to be
joyful, but instead, just does the good work for itself, and the joy
comes.
Where there is joy, there is Christmas! Everyone can make a case
that Christmas is truly the happiest time of the year. Everywhere
around us, there is a reminder of that joy, be it the lights and tinsels on
the tree, or the gifts that are wrapped and ready to be given away, or
the quiet images of the Baby in the manger. This season is associated with gathering of family and friends, and every year, we continue
to build new lasting memories on top of the old ones of many years
that have passed. When it’s Christmas, there is joy, but the opposite
is equally true – where there is joy, there is Christmas, because when
there is joy, Jesus Christ is born again in that moment, even if it’s a
different season in the year. Meanwhile, Christmas is coming, and it’s
Gaudete Sunday! So keep the joy, my dear church!
All things ncie and wonderful.

Me
iglesia!
Todas las cosas buenas y maravillosas,
Padre Sunny Castillo

Advent Prayer: Third Sunday of Advent
JESUS, today as you draw my gaze
towards Christmas, which is now coming
nearer, do not let me be taken in by
weariness or sadness, even though I may
have reason to be because of my many
concerns and the many forms of violence
which wound our humanity. May your
coming fill my heart with joy.

“A child is loved because he is one’s child: not because he is beautiful, or because hi is like this or like
that...Not because he things as I do, or embodies my dreams. A
child is a child: a life generated by us but intended for him, for
his good, for the good of the family, of society, of mankind as a
whole.”
Pope Francis, February 11, 2015

CHRISTMAS AND YEAR END GIVING
An “Investment” in Your Parish
For many years, our Catholic parishes have
benefited from the enormous contributions
and dedication of religious men and women (priests, brothers and sisters) who have given their entire lives in the service to parishes, schools, dioceses and many other Church
ministries.
Now, our Catholic Church and educational ministries are even
broader and serve more people than ever before despite the
decline in the numbers of religious. Many dedicated lay people now staff these programs and must compensated with
just and living wages. Your Christmas and year end gift is an
investment in these quality programs. A bequest is a specific
provision in your will or living trust, leaving money or other
assets to St. Teresa Church.
Please remember St. Teresa Catholic Church in
your year end giving and estate plans.

A NOTE FROM FR. ROY
I just remembered an event that took
place in connection with Franklin D.
Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the U.S.
One day he went to Africa for a hunting
and vacation. After ten days of great fun
and joy he returned to the port of New
York by a huge ship. Thousands of people and officials were waiting there to receive him and welcomed him with great shouting and
noise. At that point there was a poor and holy missionary of New
York who also got off the ship. He had been preaching and teaching the gospel in a poor African village for ten years. After ten
years of mission work and preaching he was coming back to see
his family, friends and relatives. But he found none to receive him
and say a hello to him. He felt so embarrassed and thought, “just
for ten days the president was away and he was given a great reception, but for me, spending ten years…. No reception. Nothing…!”
He made a complaint to God. He asked, “What justice is this? I
was spending my whole energy and life for the gospel mission and
I was given not even a cold reception. This is injustice!” He complained to God. After his complaining and murmuring, he heard a
voice from his heart, which said, “ You haven’t yet reached your
Home”. At that moment his sadness turned to be bliss and jubilance and he recognized that his home is not here but in heaven.
“Only when I reach heaven, will I be given a great reception and
welcome. Those who work for eternity, if they fail to get the expected respect and reward in this world, do not despair. Because
our reward is in heaven.
Often times we feel like the missionary when our hardships and
sincerity are questioned, ignored and not shown enough concern,
we also will be displeased and dispirited. There are moments in
our lives that we burn ourselves for the family and no one recognizes our selfless service. There are moments in our lives that we
dedicate our whole life for our institutions and companies and we
feel ignored, abandoned, and rejected. In all those moments we
will feel extreme pain in our heart. But we need to remember that
our life is extended to the life here after. We always need to keep
alive that our dream is heaven alone. The moment we lose our
dream of heaven we will look for earthly reward and concern. Jesus says “And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the
least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded." (Mt.10: 42)
Therefore the words of the Psalmist make sense to us; “You keep
track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your
bottle. You have recorded each one in your book”. So, let not the
respect and reward of the world blind my eyes. God is faithful in
His promises, He is to reward us and wait for His time and home,
and we will be recompensed.
Have a cheery and joyous week!
Rev. Roy Jacob CMI

December 11, 2016 Healthy Thoughts
Are you living as God intended, or are you struggling to live up
to other people’s expectations? What would happen if you just
dropped your mask and got real?
The story of The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams has a
timeless message for each of us. In a conversation between a
new toy Rabbit and an old Skin Horse, Rabbit asks, “What’s
real? Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a
stick-out handle?” “Real isn’t how you’re made,” replied Horse,
“It’s a thing that happens to you when a child really loves you.”
“Does it hurt?”, asked Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said Horse. “But
when you’re real, you don’t mind.” “Does it happen all at
once?” he asked. “It doesn’t”, said Horse, “It takes a long time.
That’s why it doesn’t often happen to people who break easily,
have sharp edges, or have to be carefully kept. Generally by the
time you’re real most of your hair has been loved off, your eyes
drop out, you get loose in the joints and very flabby. But these
things don’t matter because once you’re real, you can’t get
ugly, except to people who don’t understand.

UNDY SUNDAY – Thank you for your generous donations!
Dear Friends:
On behalf of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet I would like to
thank you for participating in Undy Sunday. This year 50 parishes, schools, and organizations collected an overwhelming
amount of underwear, socks, undershirts, and diapers. Many of
us take things like underwear for granted. Most of our clients
don’t have that luxury, but because of your generosity it will be
one less thing that they have to worry about.
Thank you for your support of Catholic Charities and the work
we do. May God continue to bless you and your family.
Sincerely,
Glenn Van Cura, Executive Director, Catholic Charities,
Diocese of Joliet
