The Wilmot Proviso proposed that
slavery be banned in the territory the
U.S. gained from Mexico
Southerners opposed it because it
limited the expansion of slavery - and it
would tip the balance in the Congress
toward the free states!
Northerners supported it because it
stopped the expansion of slavery.
Northerners helped runaway slaves escape to
freedom
Southerners were angry and saw slaves as
property that was being stolen by northerners
Northerners wanted California to
be a FREE state.
Southerners did not want to add
California as a FREE state
because it would give free states
more votes in the Senate.

4) FUGITIVE SLAVE laws
made it easier to RECLAIM
RUNAWAY SLAVES.
Most Americans were HAPPY to
see the crisis end, but
Southerners were WARY and
wanted the North to stop talking
about the SLAVERY question in
Congress.

Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote
Uncle Tom's Cabin about the
horrors of slavery.
It was first published in a
newspaper and later as a novel
Many Northerners
openly defied the
law which
angered
Southerners.
The book made
millions of
Northerners even
angrier about
slavery.
The act abolished the
Missouri Compromise and
allowed the people to decide
whether to have slavery or not.
Southerners agreed to support
the bill only if a few changes
were made.
Northerners were
angry and feared
that slavery would
expand
Pro- and antislavery settlers
poured into Kansas to protect
their interest in new territory.
Pro slavery settlers
went to Lawrence, KS and
raided their headquarters.
Northerners raised
money to send
more antislavery
settlers into the
region.
Senator Charles Sumner gave a
speech protesting against
slavery.
After his speech he was beaten.
Southerners
supported the
attacks but
Northerners
were outraged

Because his owner had taken him to WISCONSIN
which was a state that banned SLAVERY.
1) Scott could not sue for his freedom because he was not a
U.S. CITIZEN and could never be a CITIZEN.
2) Missouri Compromise was UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Slaves were considered
PROPERTY, banning slavery is like taking away someone's PROPERTY.
I am shocked and
outraged because....
Slavery is wrong! This
ruling supports more
slavery!
Yay! I am relieved
because this ruling
will let us keep our
slaves and they will
not become citizens.

for a REBELLION that would END SLAVERY.
The debate helped Lincoln become
FAMOUS
They made people really look at the moral
issue of SLAVERY.

(He won the election with 40% of the vote and his name wasn't even on the ballot in 10 southern states!)
Southerners were convinced that slavery would be BANNED which meant they would have no more
POWER to in the government to help make national decisions.

CONFEDERATE States of America.

What was his appeal to the rebellious Southern states?
Secession was both WRONG and UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
He wanted the Southern states to RETURN IN PEACE to the United States.

With PATRIOTISM
They had faith that the country would be SAVED.
