Congress has not right to decide if a state is FREE or SLAVE . Let the PEOPLE decide! Northerners supported it because it stopped the expansion of slavery. Northerners helped runaway slaves escape to freedom Southerners were angry and saw slaves as property that was being stolen by northerners Northerners wanted California to be a FREE state. Southerners did not want to add California as a FREE state because it would give free states more votes in the Senate. The act abolished the Missouri Compromise and allowed the people to decide whether to have slavery or not. Southerners agreed to support the bill only if a few changes were made. Northerners were angry and feared that slavery would expand Pro- and antislavery settlers poured into Kansas to protect their interest in new territory. Pro slavery settlers went to Lawrence, KS and raided their headquarters. Northerners raised money to send more antislavery settlers into the region. Senator Charles Sumner gave a speech protesting against slavery. After his speech he was beaten.
