Special Olympics Hosts State Basketball Championships
Derry, NH – It’s April Madness when more than 800 Special Olympics athletes and Unified Partners
come together to compete at the annual State Basketball Tournament. Opening Ceremonies take
place on April 12th; competition takes place on April 13th at locations across Derry. Teams will be
competing for state titles in Unified Full Court, Traditional Full Court, Unified 3 on 3, Traditional 3
on 3 and Individual Skills.
“For the past two months, our athletes have been practicing and competing on a regional level to
prepare and qualify for the Tournament,” explains Amy Petrie, Director of Programs. “The State
Tournament is an opportunity for them to demonstrate their skills.”
Basketball is a very popular Special Olympics sport engaging more than 140 volunteers and
building knowledge in sportsmanship, team dynamics and eye-hand coordination.
The schedule for the weekend is as follows:

Opening Ceremonies begin at 7:30 pm
Pinkerton Academy, Derry, NH
Saturday, April 13, 2013
Competition Runs from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
• Unified Full Court Competition – Sportszone Indoor Sports Complex and
West Running Brook Middle School
• Traditional Full Court Competition – Pinkerton Academy
• Unified 3 on 3 Competition –Barka Elementary School and Derry Village
Elementary School
• Traditional 3 on 3 Competition - Derry Village Elementary School
• Individual Skills Competition – Gilbert H. Hood Middle School
Both the Opening Ceremonies and the Basketball competitions are free and open to the public. To
