Fantasy
Pupils examine a range of fiction and non-fiction texts
based around the theme of fantasy. These include
poems, extracts from novels, plays and
autobiographies and newspaper articles. Texts are
both pre and post 1914.
Assessment:
Writing Non-Fiction
Speaking and Listening: Roleplay which uses a
fantasy text studied as its stimulus.
Childhood
Students examine a range of fiction and non-fiction
texts based around the theme of childhood. These
include poems, extracts from novels, plays and
autobiographies and newspaper articles. Texts are
both pre and post 1914.
Spring term
Poetry
Students examine a unit of poetry and look at the
various poetic techniques used by poets and the effects
of these techniques. Texts are both pre and post 1914.
Assessment:
Writing (fiction): A creation of an imaginative,
thoughtful text.
Speaking and Listening: Presentation about a
poem of students’ choice – a pitch which attempts to
persuade the audience to vote for this poem as the best
poem of all time.
Animals
Students examine a range of fiction and non-fiction
texts based around the theme of animals. These
include poems, extracts from novels, plays and
autobiographies and newspaper articles. Texts are
both pre and post 1914.
Summer term
Shakespeare
Students examine a unit of based on Shakespeare’s
play A Midsummer Night’s Dream and look at plot,
character, Elizabethan Theatre and some of the
techniques used by Shakespeare and the effects of
these techniques.
Assessment:
Writing Non-Fiction
Speaking and Listening: presentation of a scene
from the play – either in scripted form or the key
events used to create an improvisation.
Revision and End of Year Test Preparation
Students revise all the reading and writing skills
studied throughout the year to prepare them for the
formal examinations at the end of the year.

texts based around the theme of crime. These include

Shakespeare
Students examine a unit of study based on
Shakespeare’s play Othello and look at plot, the villain
character, Elizabethan Theatre, some of the techniques
used by Shakespeare and the effects of these
techniques.

Students examine a range of prose extracts and short
stories selected by the teacher and complete a range of

the effects of these techniques.

Literary Non Fiction (Places)
Students examine a range of literary non-fiction in
preparation for the GCSE English Language course.
This includes extracts from journals, travel writing,
newspaper articles, biography and autobiography.
Pupils will look at selecting and commenting on key
evidence from the texts, as well as the range of literary
techniques used by writers.
Non-Fiction Autobiography/Biography
Students examine a range of literary non-fiction texts.
Texts are both pre and post 1914.
Shakespeare
Students examine the plot and characters of Romeo
and Juliet in preparation for their GCSE in literature.
Students will also participate in the study of language
through themes relating to Romeo and Juliet (gangs,
arranged marriage, age of consent)

Extended Texts Study
War Literature
Students examine a range of fiction and non-fiction
texts based around the theme of war. These include
poems, extracts from novels, plays and

soldiers being shot at dawn.

on a place a pupil would like to travel to.
Students examine a challenging GCSE-style novel
selected by the teacher and complete a range of
activities based around plot, character and theme.
They will also study the narrative techniques used by
the writer in the novel, select evidence from the text
and analyse the effects of these techniques
