What were the reasons for the Church to change the name of this solemnity, from Corpus Christi to the Body and Blood of Christ? This feast became popular in an era when actual participation in the Mass was very limited, so people focused more on the result of the celebration — the Body of Christ reserved in the tabernacle and displayed in the monstrance. It became a day to celebrate the Body of Christ, carrying the sacrament through the streets in procession. That still happens in some places, though it is less common today. With the reform of the liturgy after the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the name and focus of the feast changed somewhat. It is now called “The Body and Blood of Christ,” since we share both species at Communion. This should remind us that the primary focus of our attention and devotion should be on the celebration of the Mass itself. Reservation and adoration of the reserved sacrament flow from the Mass and are always subordinate to the community’s celebration of the Mass. 2. Why is it that the faithful do not regularly receive the Blood of Christ? I have noticed that many parishioners take only the Body of Christ at Communion and pass by the cup. At the Last Supper, Jesus spoke words that we recall during the consecration at Mass: “Take and eat ... this is my body. Take and drink ... this is the cup of my blood.” We do rather well at heeding his first command but many of us still reject his second one. I have heard many reasons for this behavior. Perhaps many grew up taking only the host and they simply continue that practice -following old habits and customs when church leaders denied the cup to the faithful. Perhaps others are concerned about health issues. Others may need to avoid all alcohol. Some may be ill and are being considerate of others. Still others may not see any good reason to share the blood of Christ: they just skip the cup to avoid “traffic jams” if there are only a few cups to serve the entire Communion procession. Christ gave us the Eucharist to eat and drink. The experience of Communion is meant to unify us more deeply as one body in Christ. The purpose of the Mass, as St. Thomas Aquinas insisted, is the unity of the church. While we believe that the bread and wine are truly transformed into the body and blood of the Lord, the more important goal is the transformation of the communicants into the body of Christ in the world today. I encourage you to fully participate in this sacrament as Jesus intended. If the concern is medical, I would recommend that you read the statements from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that assure people that this is not a problem. Congratulations to all fathers and stepfathers, grandfathers and godfathers, and all men who serve and nurture young people ... for their strength and tenderness, courage and wisdom, generosity and faithfulness. Happy Fathers’ Day! Sincerely, Fr. He escuchado muchas razones explicando este comportamiento.
