Extent of the Problem Many people with mental health problems use smoking to manage symptoms, stress, or increase social contact and consume nearly half of all tobacco sold in the United States. Compared with the general population population, individuals with mental health problems are at greater risk of comorbid health problems and premature death. Tobacco is a risk factor for six of the eight leading causes of death in the world today.
