b. Khalid Backtash: And the USC passed this?
c. Eric Robinson: What are the consequences if we don’t do it?
d. Jake Sawyer: How exactly did the USC think that they could tell us how to run our
meetings?
e. Elaine Cook: Okay, okay, they didn’t really pass it. I just had a bet with Cassy to see if we
could get you guys on board. *Plays video of students singing and participating in the
Western Song*.
f. Ethan Kellough: It’s one thing that we have the song but another that there are 30
people lame enough to do the actions and sing in front of everyone.
10. Founders Network Discussion – Khalid Backtash
a. If you were at last week’s meeting or your read the minutes, a group from the Founder’s
Network about running a conference about technology. They
b. Gregory Evans: I personally don’t think that we should do it. We have enough issues
getting students out to our own events and I don’t see much interest from our UES
members. I think that $1000 could be better used for our own events.
c. Elaine Cook: I am speaking for this. I think that this is great for our entrepreneurship
focused students. I know that $1000 is a lot of money, but maybe we should just give
some of it.
d. Peter Serles: Against, I think we already have enough entrepreneurship focused events
here.
e. Kathleen McAllister: Against, we already have the Leadership and Innovation Speaker
series and they are not well attended and I think that we should
f. Jake Sawyer: I agree with Kathleen; I think that this is not worth it when we have our
own events.
g. Elaine Cook: If we don’t want to give money to this can we ask them how many
engineering students attend so that next year we could consider it with some metrics.
h. Carl Botha: What is this about?
i. Aly Klein: Did you read the minutes?
j. Khalid Backtash: At the last meeting, the Founder Network came to us asking for money
to fund a conference on technology and the positive effects that it has on society.
k. Jake Sawyer: I would like to call to question.
l. In favour of providing money: 1, Against: 26, Abstain: 5
11. New Club/Team Approval – Khalid Backtash
a. This is a very rough example of what I would like to present though I am not quite ready
right now as I am still consulting clubs, teams and the by-laws.
b. According to this, the Clubs Commission would be able to approve applications for clubs
and groups but teams who require more resources would have to be approved by the
faculty.
c. I would like to implement this in once it is completed but I would also like to hear your
thoughts.
d. Peter Serles: Why would clubs only clubs be approved by the faculty?
e. Khalid Backtash: Teams will have to be approved by the faculty because teams which
want to build and compete would need more space resources as well as money which
would mostly be coming from the students in the project fund. Interest based clubs and
groups would be able to be approved by the Clubs Commission because their needs
would be lesser.
12. Motion to Approve the Western EngiQueers – Khalid Backtash
a. The spirit of the motion is to approve the Western EngiQueers as a UES-ratified club.
b. Though we are currently working on the new club and group approval process, it
seemed important to get the ball rolling with approving the EngiQueers since they have
existed since the beginning of the school year and have been working to start up since
last year.
c. This is just a read through and we will vote at the next meeting.

those.
f. Dean Shadow Day is also coming up in a few weeks so if any of you have difficult classes
or really good classes please let me know.
g. We also have another Teaching Effectiveness Committee meeting coming up so the
same thing goes for that.
14. Aly Klein

g. I also need to sew the patches from Congress onto my jersey.
Khalid Backtash
a. UES Presidential election is happening today. Elaine is the only one running so it’s more
of a vote of confidence.
b. USC elections are happening until tomorrow. Please vote and make an informed
decision.
c. As we saw earlier, I have been working on the new club approval process.
d. Elaine, Cassy and I sat through a very long CHRW meeting and it was painful.
e. There is also the Senator issue which we talked about previously which is still a work in
progress but we did get them to listen to us.
f. Still working on the Career Services Survey, the numbers are weak and the first years so
far have responded the most. Don’t let the first years beat you. This is a great
opportunity for you to tell us what you want more of but the faculty won’t listen to us if
we can’t give them a good enough response. We put a lot of work into this but it’s all for
you and if you don’t want it I guess that’s one thing but it’s tough to hear people
complaining about these issues and then not filling out the survey to make a change.
g. We will have executive elections and campaigning coming up next week so if you’re
thinking about applying please talk to our exec.
h. Still working on advocacy for tuition, it looks like engineering students who taking nonengineering courses in the summer will not have to pay the double cost in the future, as
well as advocating for the Clean-air Corridor, Mental Health and Pedestrian Safety on
campus.
i. I’m also hoping to have some portfolio meetings over the next few weeks.
