In the Lab with Mrs. Dooley
Mrs. Bell’s Math Corner
Hello! My name is Alicia Bell, and I’m so excited about
this school year. This week we will be working with place
value from the thousandths place to the billions place.
We will also work with comparing decimals. Your
student will need to be sure to review his/her
multiplication facts every night for at least 5 minutes a
day. Please let me know if you have any questions! I’m
more than happy to help in any way I can.

Last week we set up our Science Journal, established norms for
working at tables, and began our Unit 1 study of lab safety, tools,
and scientific method. Friday I sent home the instructions for
completing the 1st project, “Journal Cover” that will be due Friday,
September 2nd. This week we will do our first lab using the
scientific method, but all student safety contracts must be signed
and returned before I can set the date. Bring them in ASAP
please! Labs are so much fun. We will have a pop quiz this week
on lab safety and tools, but this is review since 3 rd grade. They
should not need to study, but you can go to the Bolin Website, click
the Faculty Web Pages tab, click Stephanie Dooley, and go to my
calendar page. I am daily updating this calendar to show what we
did in class, an example of any work that you could print off an
extra copy if you need one, directions, and the due date. Hopefully
this helps make your life easier. I already love all my students! We
are going to have an amazing year!
Parents and students: Toys and trading cards are not allowed
at school. We are not responsible for lost, stolen, broken
toys should students choose to bring them. Please ensure
these items stay at home.

Last week spent quite a bit of time discussing how to
choose a book that was a good fit for each of us, depending
on our ability as well as our interests. This should improve
the students’ drive to read. Students set goals for the
number of pages they want to read each day. They will have
between 10-15 minutes of independent reading time in
Reading class each day. This should allow them to get a
good portion of their goal completed at school each
day. Whatever doesn’t get completed at school, is
homework. Their individual “Reading Record” with the
page number they are expected to read to each day, is in the
sheet protector at the front of their binder.
During reading this week we will be working on improving
our fluency by focusing on our use of punctuation
cues. Students should read 125-150 words per minute. We
will also work to improve our vocabulary development by
studying the meaning of grade-level academic English
words derived from Latin and Greek roots.
